A quarter of a mile from our beloved Sourdough Campground the fi rst rig wecame to was perched on the muddy side of the hill just feet up from the crashing river we enjoy dangling our hot sweaty toes in after the long McGrew Trail.

Letter to the Editor:Re: McKenzie

HarrisThis is a “short” letter to all of the PNW members with a special shout-out to the PNW President, Tacoma Webfooters, Spanaway Moonshiners, members of Region II, Four Wheel Parts in Tacoma who donated a winch to raffl e at the Region II meeting and the whole bunch of people from the Eatonville area. McKenzie is our Great Granddaughter, her mother Sara is our Grand Daughter and our son Brian’s Daughter.

As our President, Angie Marek, noted in her President section of the Tri-Power, Keith and I are not having a great 2014. Our Granddaughter and her Family were in an extremely horrifi c accident on Jan. 1 on Highway 7 near 314th at about 10:00 a.m. They were only about a block from their house when an oncoming truck was passing cars like crazy and hit them head on. There was a possible medical emergency on the part of the oncoming driver.

There were 4 kids and 2 adults in their truck and Sara, who was driving, tried to turn right to get out of his way – but it was too late. Two of the kids are nieces of Kendal Moyer. The three kids in the back had injuries but they weren’t life-threatening – some broken bones, one facial laceration that needed plastic surgery and a few other things. It was very traumatic for them! One of nieces was released that day and the other niece and our Great Grandson Wyatt were released a few days later. I won’t go into a lot of details about Sara, Doug but this will focus on our Great Granddaughter McKenzie (7 years old). McKenzie will be a quadriplegic, probably for life, and she is still at Children’s Hospital in Seattle. She has proved all the Doctors wrong (2 or 3 times they said she was dead) so we are betting on her to make liars out of us, too. She will continue to need 24 hour care for a long time to come. The whole family appreciates our Daughter-in-law, Amy (Brian’s wife), staying with her 24/7 for all this time. Hopefully, McKenzie can come home sometime in May. We have some great people working to build the new rooms that McKenzie will need for her daily care. We have had lots of our friends (old and new) out working on the additions.

The thanks we want to shout out is for everyone that has worked on the house, donated time and materials, donated money to the Harris Family Donation account at Key Bank and the”YouCaring.com” web site and who have donated time and money at the myriad of fundraisers that have been going on.

Again, thanks!!!

May has come and gone already and the world marches on; not waiting for me to catch up again. If wishes would come true a good wish would be to wake up each morning with everything one started yesterday checked off done the night before. Not half done, not waiting for parts, not out of time as fatigue overcomes one’s mind, but done completely as laid out and planned. With nothing left over to do but admire a well done job that is perfectly done. It sure would be a good way to start one’s day off that would be sure.

On Mother’s Day each year a trail maintenance is done in the National Forest west of O’Brien, Oregon. Larry East heads it up and volunteers from around the state meet at O’Brien to work rain or shine. This year Deschutes County 4-Wheelers, Strawberry Hill 4-Wheelers, Four-Runners of Klamath- Falls, Timber-Cruisers from Roseburg, Oregon and four prospect members from the Roseburg area worked hand in hand to clear the trail. It has become a tradition within Region 6 for over 30 years. Larry has been doing this for many of those years. Sometimes large groups of smiling helpers show up and other times not so many but the object is the same and that is to clear Creek-n-Trail from dead fall, boulders, brush that yearns for the open trail and pick up garbage along the route. It is a very worthy cause and if you have never been you should; as it is very hard to fi nd such an enjoyable time working with four wheelers maintaining Class II trails. This year we were met by the Forest Service they inspected our rigs at the town of O’Brien. This was not expected but after a while no objections were raised by them and all were allowed to go. At the new gate which they opened for us per our permit fi ve rigs went up the trail and four continued on to Sourdough Campground. The gate was promptly closed behind them and relocked by the Forest Service.

After leaving the maintained forest road one will not leave second gear and most of time the newer rigs will be in fi rst gear. It is a slow go allowing the driver and riders a fi rst-hand look at the beauty this forest has to offer.

The streams were gushing from the mountain sides this year. Rarely does one catch this peak runoff but this year we saw the strength of water moving and changing the mountain sides forever as only Mother Nature can do and does at her will. From across the many canyons could be seen the frothy white water as it cascades down the very steep hillsides, far into the canyons below. The hundreds of steams fi lled the canyons below with raging waters headed for the nearest river miles below our trail vantage point. Often I tried to capture this on fi lm but it is impossible for nature to be fi lmed as it is seen standing in it. It is a very short time yearly that the water gush from the mountain sides but if you get a chance to see this fi rst hand it is worthy of your time to do so.

The forest fl owers are just beginning to bloom but some are in full bloom such as the Dogwood Trees and their blossoms were beautiful. There had been a light rain that morning and the moisture on the fl owers in the sunlight was as if a light bulb was turned on from the inside of each. Each blossom trying to outshine the other in the morning sun seemed to be the order of the day. If one was very watchful a bright green humming bird could be seen darting from one to the other as if there were only moments to gather the sweet nectars of each.

This year the dead fall was very light on both the unmaintained forest road and the McGrew Trail and we all made it to Sourdough Campground around fourish in the afternoon for some well-earned relaxation in the sun. It was just a little bit heaven on earth as all enjoyed the afternoon and dinners were made.

This year the outdoor outhouses were in good shape and needed no real maintenance other than cleaning up the litter left behind by others was needed. As always the Yahoos showed up and things for them just went from bad to worse. The last one to arrive attempted to drive at full speed through a very large mud puddle but failed to go any further. The driver of that rig coasted to a stop where he sat for about two hours as they worked on it. It did start briefl y but it never ran again which meant it would have to be towed out 21 miles back to O’Brien over some very rough roads.

Others started to go around boulders placed by the Forest Service within the campground to stop vandals from playing within the campground. At that time we intervened and at least playing within the campground stopped.

The Yahoos left camp about an hour before dark to go ‘four-wheeling’ and we hoped they would simply disappear. That is the problem with Yahoos they do not just disappear. Their tracks on the landscape do not disappear and we the Class II community take it solidly on the chin ever year as we lose more trails due to them than for any other reason. They do not care what they destroy; either landscape, their busted up rigs or themselves all is but another alcohol drink or drugs or both away from making the world a better place to live. As if any of those things can fi x what they tear up it just aids in their ‘stardom’ amongst their drunken peers.

A half hour later another of the Yahoos

came limping back to camp. The driver of that rig had no clutch but the rider of that rig jumped out and walked over to us asking for help. It was very hard for our group of PNW members to not turn our backs on him but we had to help as his rig was hanging on a single tree fi fty feet above the prettiest place along Creek-n-Trail. This rig was crossing a bridge that made up a 180 degree turn in the road. It was hard to swallow but the rig in the rushing waters below would be a very bad thing and most likely would close this trail to Class II for a very long time.

With our combined skilled efforts at winching the rig was quickly recovered back onto the roadway. About that same time another Yahoo came walking down the road and informed us of that the last of the Yahoos rigs was several miles up the road rolled over. With a whole lot of they get what they deserved went through the crowd we slowly made our way up the service road which is the only way out and it is now blocked by a rolled over Yahoo’s rig. It was diffi cult not to just leave them there till morning but there was no other route around them as they were in the middle of the road which was a good thing as the downhill side was about 150 feet before the earth would have been found to stop the roll.

With a winch line to secure the rig to the mountain-side a dead-man placed just right the rig was up on all fours again. This rig had left considerable derbies in the roadway. We left the six of them to clean up the damages and to get the rig back to camp or at least up to the top of the trail and we returned to camp. The problem with Yahoos is almost always too much alcohol and drugs or a combination of each. The thing that is true here is it is illegal to do either while on public lands yet nothing is being done about it. The CFRs are very clear that it is illegal but law enforcement ignores it. The public continues to pressure the policeman on state, county, and city roads and byways but do not pressure our public land managers to stop the Yahoos from using motorized vehicles on public lands while using drugs and alcohol. It is quite apparent that most accidents and/or loss of life happen when alcohol and drugs are being abused and in most cases publicly by the Yahoos.

Maybe as a group of like-minded people; the PNW should become involved and start putting adds in our Tri-Power at least to stop Class II users from believing drugs and alcohol go hand in hand while four wheeling. It is just a thought; we the PNW members are the ones that are losing the very trails we have worked so hard for. In this case Region 6 has worked for/on this trail for over 33 years. If the people that are creating the damages are Yahoos that care nothing about keeping trails why would we not do everything to shut them off our trails? I personally believe if alcohol and drugs were not allowed in/on public lands there would be very few Yahoos wheeling on public lands around our association.

I was lucky enough to get to attend the annual permitted Mother’s Day Week-end cleanup of the McGrew Trail out of O’Brien Oregon.

A quarter of a mile from our beloved Sourdough Campground the fi rst rig wecame to was perched on the muddy side of the hill just feet up from the crashing river we enjoy dangling our hot sweaty toes in after the long McGrew Trail.

What do you do when a stranger wanders through camp rambling about two rollovers and you are 25 miles from town?Region 6 jumped into action as we ran the trail backwards to the two rollovers. We noticed on the way back out of the tail the next morning all evidence of rollovers had been removed just the tracks of the unfortunate day’s events were remaining.

Tillamook State Forest work party

PNW4WDA region 3 hosted a work party in the Tillamook State Forest in May. We had a great turnout! Many clubs worked together on this project.

We were supported by Flat Broke N Four Wheelin, Bri and Bub Off Road, Hubs In 4 Wheelers, Jolly Jeepers, Just Wheelin', Bronco Hazard, and Bonney Motorsports.

35 people donated 124 volunteer hours that day. Our project for the day was to widen an existing quad trail to class II width. The trail is Waldo's Way; 16c on the map. We made quick work of our project due to the equipment that showed up.

We had a mini excavator, a bobcat, a dump trailer, and several chainsaws at our disposal thanks to the group effort. We are so lucky to have the forestry service on our side in Tillamook. Many areas are losing trails. All we needed was some volunteers to say they would show up and get it done. I look forward to many more!

Thanks!Teresa

TRAIL MAINTENANCEHere are a couple of pictures of Dale Neuman showing how to split fi rewood and stake at Williams Creek camp, Liberty WA.

2014 Off Road Motorsports Hall of

FameThe Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame (ORMHOF) announces today the 2014 Class of Inductees. Del Albright, David Ashley, Marty Fiolka, the late Nye Frank, and Bill Sanders will have their names added to the venerable list of those who have committed their lives to the off-road community.

The fi ve Inductees' widespread accomplishments cover a number of arenas in the sport including off-road racing, and acting as pioneers of the industry, journalism and advocacy. Their legacies will be celebrated and displayed for the public, in Gallery Four within the famed National Automobile Museum - the Harrah Collection- located in Reno, Nevada. They join names synonymous with the sport including Parnelli Jones, Malcolm Smith, Rob MacCachren, Larry Roeseler, Walker Evans, and Rod Hall, as well as many others who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make the sport prosper and grow.

The Induction Class was chosen by an eighteen-member voting panel on the basis of signifi cant contribution to off-road motorsports- beyond wins and sport affi liation.

All nominees must have at least fi fteen years of experience and involvement, as well as have built, designed, driven, maintained, owned, prepared, piloted, promoted, or ridden an off-road vehicle or supported the off-road industry. They are characterized by their desire to win, the mastery of their fi eld, and their courage to innovate. Each Inductee has made a signifi cant contribution to off-road motorsports in at least one of the following aspects: Business, History, Design, Engineering, Prestige of the Sport, and/or Growth of the Sport.

This year's Induction Ceremonies will introduce a new venue, as the Inductees will be honored Sunday, November 2, 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada at the South Point Hotel and Casino. For further information, visit the ORMHOF website: www.ormhof.org or email at [email protected].

BIOSDel Albright has shared 33 years of wisdom, knowledge of leadership, and supervision to help keep public lands open to the public. He has spent time working on trails, attending meetings, writing letters, joining and starting organizations, and meeting with legislators to effectively save access to public lands. While he is known for doing all of these things, in addition to being the ambassador for the Blue Ribbon Coalition, his most signifi cant contribution to off-road motorsports sets him apart from others in land-use because he educates and mentors the OHV community. His extensive background in leadership, supervision, and management has allowed him to mentor many other land-use advocates through Recreational Leadership Training courses, as well as Volunteer Leader and Land Stewardship classes. Del has also mentored smaller groups, such as 4x4 clubs, as well as "Friends of" organizations that have modeled themselves after the Friends of the Rubicon, which Del was a principal founder of many years ago.

David Ashley as been engaged in off-road motorsports for 43 years. He has successfully raced motorcycles, buggies, off-road trucks, and stadium vehicles. His career started as a young man, when he won a gold medal for the United States (and his Yamaha sponsor), in the Six Day Trials in Austria. At age 18, Dave was involved in a tragic head-on collision that ended in a fatality. This accident inspired Dave to vow to make off-road racing a safer sport. In his pursuit of safety, he chaired the drivers' safety meetings for many of his races, as well as worked with race promoters to avoid hidden hazards. He also worked with many less experienced drivers, sharing techniques to avoid problems. Dave took his passion for safety to vehicle manufacturers and, for the last 22 years, he has worked with the transmission, safety, engine, chassis development, motorsports and special vehicle teams of Ford Motor Company, as a consultant in their testing, research, and development efforts. Dave's current assignments include: test-driving for the Safety Rollover Airbag Sensor team, building the Raptor Race Vehicle for international competition, and working for Roush, as the manager for Ford Off-Road Track Safety.

Marty Fiolka's involvement in off-road motorsports demonstrates a broad reach with his ability to intermix public relations, marketing, journalism, broadcasting and other expertise into one effective representation for the off-road industry. Marty is well known for his ability to perform extensive research, publishing his fi rst book "1000 Miles to Glory", and writing countless articles for Dirt Sports magazine. He was also the Associate Producer for the movie Dust to Glory and now Executive Producer for the Baja Social Club. He has been instrumental in preserving the history of the sport, in many areas like organizing a parade of historic race vehicles from Tijuana to Ensenada as part of the 40th Anniversary of the Baja 1000; helping to re-launch the legendary Meyers Manx, and supporting Mr. Meyers to race his fi nal race in 2014; and growing the new NORRA vintage rally movement. Marty continues to build an off-road motorsports legacy, with a number of ongoing projects that will further document and celebrate the sport.

Nye Frank's successful career as a designer and car builder proved that he had a unique and comprehensive understanding of performance -from conception to completion- of not only vehicle development, but also the planning and strategy needed to win races. His work with shock absorbers in the 80's was far ahead of its time. He is best known for his innovative use of air shocks with the Mazda program in Mickey Thompson Entertainment Group and later with Rob MacCachren in SODA and CORR. Many of the concepts Nye created have now been adopted by the industry, such as his approach to suspension tuning and the relationship between springs and shocks to form a complete suspension. He also designed and built a Pro4 truck for MacCachren with an unheard of and unconventional four corner air-shock system; the team was so dominating that CORR outlawed the suspension, after MacCachren's team captured three consecutive Borg Warner trophies and several season championships. Nye was drawn to off-road racing because of the lack of

overbearing rules that suffocate many forms of traditional racing. He led the way in new concepts in all aspects of the sport.

Bill Sanders was one of the original editors of Four Wheeler Magazine; he lifted the sport from obscurity to the public recognition, by faithfully covering nearly every off-road race of signifi cance from Baja to Las Vegas. When it came to the building of the industry, Bill and Four Wheeler offered story after story on manufacturers struggling to gain recognition. He worked on the human interest aspect as well, by doing feature articles on the drivers who engaged in the major races, and promoting many who are now fellow ORMHOF Inductees. Besides being involved with the monthly magazine, Sanders took time to become a real off-road racer. He was able to fi nd help to build a Toyota FJ, which he ran in the 1973 Mexican 1000 resulting in a Class 3 victory; it was the fi rst Toyota vehicle to win in the Baja. Bill helped to grow off-road motorsports into a sport with worldwide recognition during the early years of off-road racing, and provided a place for those who were also supporting the sport to showcase their work.

2014 Induction Ceremony

"Celebrate the past. Be part of the future."

ORMHOF is proud to announce that this year's Ceremony will take place at a new venue, on a new date. Please contact Shelby Hall to fi nd out more, [email protected]

BRC Signs On To Participate In “Idaho

Gives” Day – Your Donation Could

Be Worth More!POCATELLO, ID (April 30, 2014 ) - The BlueRibbon Coalition (BRC), a leading advocate for recreational access to public lands, announces its offi cial participation in the Idaho Non-Profi t Center's second annual "Idaho Gives" day, which will take place on May 1, 2014. The Center hopes to build on the success of last year's inaugural, statewide giving blitz, which raised nearly $600,000 for hundreds of nonprofi ts in a 24-hour period.

"Last year's debut of Idaho Gives generated a tremendous outpouring of support from people all around Idaho, who gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to support more than 400 causes from across the state," said Lynn Hoffmann, Executive Director of the Idaho Nonprofi t Center. "This year, we hope to reach even more people by broadening and amplifying our call to support Idaho's nonprofi ts, spurring donors into action on May 1."

The event largely takes place online, driven by a central idahogives.org web site, where donors can learn about and designate funds for nonprofi ts in a number of categories, including arts & culture, children & youth, environment, humanitarian aid, education, animals, and religious organizations.

Idaho Gives is not just any fundraising day. Event sponsors have contributed money for a pool of match and prize funds, such that throughout the day organizations and donors will have the opportunity to multiply donations through hourly competitions, random drawings, and other giving incentives.

There are over $50,000 in cash prizes at stake for the non-profi t organizations involved. These prizes can help your donation dollars go farther. Your $25 could become $1,025. 2014 Award Pool Details.

This event is an awesome opportunity for folks that recreate on Idaho's many public lands to contribute to BRC's efforts to protect their access to those areas and many others across the nation.

It's quick and easy. Just click HERE to participate. Interested parties won't have to wait until May 1, either. They can get started supporting their recreational access immediately. Any such "Early Bird" contributions will not be processed until May 1, but are eligible for the Early Bird Prize.

For more information on Idaho Gives day, visit www.idahogives.org, or fi nd Idaho Gives on Facebook and Twitter.
