In 2006 Billy Graham was interviewed by Newsweek. In his response to a question about death Graham said that he had been taught how to die—but never taught how to grow old. That prompted him to begin thinking about writing Nearing Home. At the age of 92 Graham, well known author and evangelist, shares his thoughts on life, faith and fi nishing well. Mr. Graham expresses a hope we should fi nd as we get older, face retirement, and get nearer to the home that Jesus promised.

Mr. Graham asks penetrating questions like: “Will we seek God’s plan for our retirement years? Or will we drift aimlessly along, as-suming our usefulness is over, spending the rest of our days trying to squeeze as much enjoyment as we can out of life?” He encour-ages us to pray, seek God’s will, and not let laziness or boredom take root in your soul. Good advice at any stage in life.

Depression, loneliness, dementia, anger and grief are subtle issues that often affect elderly. Graham quotes scripture as he discuss-es the declining strength and the aging process through which people go. My fl esh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26 NKJV Focusing on serving others, spending time with family and friends, and growing closer to Christ gives the greatest joy in life. We need to put our house (our affairs) in order—and that includes our spiritual life.

One story he relates is about a young man with a tumor around his heart whose doctors tell him that a miracle could save his life. The man responded, “If I live I win. If I die I win.” We’re all going to die someday. Will you “win” when you die?

I recently had the privilege of touring the Tri-City Union Gospel Mis-sion (UGM) and seeing the impact they make in people’s lives. The UGM serves up to 300 meals a day to community members in need and has directly impacted over 3,000 lives in 2012 alone. The UGM provides meals, showers and clean clothing to help area resi-dents regain their dignity, chapel time, shelter and a bed to sleep on. The UGM is a place for people to go when they have no place to go. The UGM provides restrooms 24 hours a day for people to utilize.Tri-City Union Gospel Mission began serving Benton and Franklin counties over 57 years ago, providing rescue ministry to the broken, bruised, and needy in the Tri-Cities and surrounding communities. Their desire is still the same today-to minister to the spiritual, physical, and moral needs of transient and destitute individuals and assist the poor and needy. They serve as advocates for the homeless, poor and discarded members of our community, with an emphasis on pre-senting a realistic and compassionate picture of their unique needs, especially homeless women and children. They believe the gospel of Jesus Christ can positively impact the lives of these men and women for lasting change.Furthermore, they are an information clearinghouse, providing updat-ed resource information. In this way both the agencies that assist this fragile population and those in need of various social and develop-

mental services fi nd one another. Ultimately, they exist to create op-portunities within our immediate and expanded communities for more ef-fective ministering to the needs of the poorest and most destitute among us. Daily, they provide food, clothing,

shelter, resource assistance, drug and alcohol counseling and treatment, emergency shelter for both men and women, and women with children. They also provide outreach into the community through weekly furniture, food box, and clothing give-away programs, as well as an intensive residential addictions program. The UGM describes their involvement in people’s lives as: rescue, recovery and res-toration. The rescue involves meeting the basic needs as outlined above. The recovery component addresses the underlying causes of homelessness and poverty while helping establish healthy patterns of living. Restoration supports residents as they transition back into society to establish themselves in the workplace. UGM’s guests can enroll in a 13 month program that helps them accomplish this goal. There are many suc-cess stories and testimonies from this.

Many people help the UGM daily by giving food, clothing, bedding, and personal items. Many others volunteer on a regular basis doing a variety of tasks. Other people provide monetary donations to help shoulder UGM fi nancial needs. There are lots of needs and lots of ways for you to get involved and help this important Tri-Cities institu-tion. I encourage you to call the UGM and schedule a tour because there is so much more information and stories of hope than we have space to report. You will come away with a feeling of appreciation for the work that is being done, and a feeling of hopefulness for what the future will bring. The UGM has a volunteer coordinator, Emily Sullivan, who can help get you plugged into one of the many volunteer opportunities that are available. Please check them out at: www.tcugm.org to learn more about the UGM or 547-2112 to schedule an informative tour.
