ARIES (March 21-April 19): First come, first served. St. Patrick’s Day gives you an excuse to drink green beer or hunt for four leaf clovers. Even without a lucky charm, you could be lucky in love or money in the upcoming week.TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Do exactly what you agreed to do and honor meaningful commitments in the week ahead. Being true blue and dependable is the best way to maintain your reputation and pleasant working relationships.GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You won’t need to have the best of everything if you make the best of everything this week. You may get a chance to wear green for St. Patrick’s Day, but aren’t in much danger of becoming green with envy.CANCER (June 21-July 22): Rely on intuition to follow a carefree path. Float along on inspiration, while others struggle along on the hard cold ground. This is a week when you can make your dreams come true if you let go of hang-ups.LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): In the upcoming week, use the litmus test to see who is true blue and devoted to you. Achieve harmony by presenting a united front and keeping romance alive. You and a partner will be on the same wavelength.VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): A leprechaun’s pot of gold is within your reach. When you find yourself between a rock and a hard place, the rock may be the Blarney Stone and offer you a way out by using your charismatic appeal.LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “When Irish Eyes are Smiling,” you could be swept away by a hot new office romance. In the week to come, you might be the center of attention when praise or promotions are passed around at work.SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): The grass may be greener on the other side of the fence, but it is also the color to wear today. You can enjoy and share in other people’s success in the upcoming week without discarding your own habitat.SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Your impishness sometimes appears when you get a chance to improvise. In the week ahead, you will find that your practical jokes and a devil-may-care attitude receive a warm reception.CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Get buttered up, buttercup. Someone in the immediate vicinity may seem to have kissed the Blarney Stone and you could receive more than your fair share of flattery. Enjoy praise in the week ahead.AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Stick close to hearth and home in the week ahead, giving all your devotion to those you can depend upon and trust. A friend could give you a tip about something worthwhile if you follow through.PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Partners can take a trip through paradise. If you have love and affection on your mind, or a job offer on the table, the first part of the week could offer a chance to make some of your dreams come true.

COINCIDENCE (continued):• In 1971, Mrs. Willard Lovell of Berkeley,

California, accidentally locked herself out of the house. She spent 10 minutes trying to find a way in, when the postman arrived with a letter from her brother. He had been staying with her a few weeks earlier, and the letter contained a spare key to the house, which he had borrowed and forgotten to return.

• It was a hot evening in June in El Paso, Texas when patrolman Allen Falby accidentally crashed his motorcycle into a speeding truck. Businessman Alfred Smith witnessed the accident and was the first person on the scene. Falby lay bleeding to death from a severed artery in his leg. Quickly, Smith removed his tie and fashioned an effective tourniquet from it. When the ambulance crew arrived, they credited Smith with saving Falby’s life. Falby eventually recovered, and returned to police work. Five years later, he reported to an accident scene along Highway 80. A car had smashed into a tree, and the driver was bleeding to death from a severed artery in his leg. Falby pulled the man from the car and applied a tourniquet. While trying to make the man more comfortable, he suddenly recognized the victim. It was Alfred Smith, the same man who had saved his own life five years earlier. “One good tourniquet deserves another,” quipped Falby.

• Brenda Rawson became engaged to Christopher Firth in 1961, and he gave her a nice diamond ring. She was heartbroken when she lost the ring while on vacation in Lancashire, England. In 1979 she was talking with her husbands’ cousin, John. They were discussing metal detectors when John mentioned that 18 years earlier, one of his kids had discovered a diamond ring near Lancashire. It was her ring.

• A farmer’s wife in West Germany lost her wedding ring in a potato field. Forty years later, she found it again- inside a potato grown in that field.

• Actor Anthony Hopkins was looking for a book called The Girl from Petrovka by George Feifer because he was playing a part in a movie being made from the book. He looked all over London for a copy but couldn’t find one. Later he was waiting in a subway station when he noticed someone had left a book behind on

Large, heavy vehicles remain popular in Canada

(NC)—Despite fuel costs, emission concerns and conservation awareness, Canadians are increasingly showing a preference for larger and heavier vehicles.

The latest Canadian Vehicle Survey delivers useful information related to on-road transportation activities and fuel consumption across the country.

The survey is made available by Natural Resources Canada online at www.nrcan.gc.ca.

Overall, during the period 2000 to 2009, the number of light duty vehicles registered on the roads grew at an average of 1.9 per cent per year, reaching about 19.8 million vehicles in 2009. The number of vehicles per household increased from 1.43 to 1.47 for the same period.

Between 2000 and 2009, there was also a significant change in the composition of the light vehicle fleet. The share of the ‘light truck’ category (vans, sport utility vehicles [SUVs] and pickup trucks) increased substantially relative to the share of ‘cars.’ Most notably, the number of SUVs almost doubled

and its share of the ‘light vehicle fleet’ increased from 6.9 per cent to 12.8 per cent. Meanwhile, the share of cars decreased from 60.5 per cent to 55.4 per cent.

Vehicle weight and engine power are important factors governing an automobile’s fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. We can all save money and decrease pollution by increasing our awareness of technology options and by selecting vehicles that meet our everyday needs.

Additional information and resources to inform consumers can be found online at www.vehicles.gc.ca

Your Master Controller, responsible for the function of everything.

We have learned that our body is a self-healing organism. Next, we discover that our nervous system is what is responsible for the healing in our body. In fact, our nervous system controls the function of every cell, tissue and organ in our body and coordinates them together so that our body works in perfect harmony. We have also learned that true health is not how we feel. A person could have cancer or heart disease and feel great yet obviously be in very poor health. We know that true health is our body functioning 100%, 100% of the time. It is important to make the connection that health is optimal function and it’s our nervous system that controls that function. Therefore, in order for you to have true health, your nervous system must be able to control and coordinate the function of every cell, tissue and organ without interference. The brain and spinal cord are connected to every cell, tissue and organ via our spinal nerve system. The spinal nerve system is composed of three types of nerves. Sensory nerves: These nerves tell our brain what is happening in our internal and external environment. Motor nerves: These nerves control and coordinate our muscles. Autonomic nerves: These nerves control and coordinate our organs, blood vessels and glands.

Think about it. What do you think would happen to your health if any part of your nervous system were to be interfered with?

Lifestyle suggestions for Diabetics 1 - Food Matters

Diabetics have to learn how to control food intake in order to regulate the peak (high) and valleys (low) of the glucose concentration in their blood. The main goal is to narrow that gap. When our blood sugar level is low, our brain will naturally send us signals telling us to eat or find sweet foods. At this point if we eat too much or consume foods with a high glycemic index it will turn into blood sugar too fast and elevate the peak readings to a higher level. Your blood sugar level can become extremely low if you miss a meal, overdose on medication or even after intense exercise. Signs of low blood sugar level are dizziness, sudden confusion, sudden elevation of heartbeat and sweating. Sometimes low blood sugar level can even lead to comas! Workable Lifestyle Suggestions:Try finding low glycemic index (slow release) food sources; even sugar is not created equal as some have a much lower index.Always carry some emergency candy or glucose tablets with you. If you experience a low sugar reaction, take them immediately.Never miss any meals, eat smaller portions regularly throughout the day; Always have a small snack before going to bed. Include protein with carbohydrates with snack as it will help slow down the sugar release. Unsweetened and unsalted healthy nuts are good choices of protein.Limit your alcohol consumption to two drinks daily.Cut down on saturated fat in your diet as it could worsen blood glucose control.Brush your teeth after every meal to reduce the likelihood of gum infection.

Louisa has three strikes against her. She is diabetic, she is a senior, and she is mostly black. Lousia was found homeless, but at some point she must have had a human family because she is such a good natured, loving old girl. When Louisa first arrived at Katie’s Place she was rather overwhelmed with her surroundings. She has come around and now seeks out attention from anyone who will so much as look her way. She has luminous olive-green eyes but because she’s black, older and diabetic Louisa is often overlooked by adopters. We have hope for Louisa’s future and she certainly has faith that people will like her as much as she likes them. Come and meet this sweet cat. She can be adopted as a permanent foster so you don’t need to worry about any medical costs. Louisa has been

with us for too long. She should be spending her golden years curled up on a couch with someone who adores her. Penny-Lane is also a diabetic. She is on a minimal dose and it appears

her diabetes is under control. She is a funny little girl and everyone at the shelter has fallen in love with her. Penny is not a huge fan of other cats so she spends her life in our hallway. She enjoys hiding under blankets and some of us have spent many frantic moments trying to locate her to give her her meds. Then suddenly a gray fuzzy face appears out of nowhere. If you’re looking for a little cat who would love to spend the evening sitting on your lap while you watch your favourite show, Penny-Lane just may be your girl! Because she is diabetic she would definately qualify for a permanent foster placement. Like Louisa, Penny-Lane has been at our shelter for too long and even though she has the run of the place she desperately longs for a place of her own where she can relax and be loved.

Q: My Shiba Inu seems to have chronically clogged anal glands. I’ve had dogs my entire life, but I’ve never seen so much licking of the butt. I took my dog to the veterinarian for manual extraction but it didn’t help. The veterinarian suggested surgery. What do you think? - S.L., Cyberspace

A: “This is a very common problem,” notes Chicago veterinarian Dr. Sheldon Rubin. What’s likely occurred is that the anal sacs have become impacted. The sacs are supposed to empty with each bowel movement. However, in some individual dogs this doesn’t happen or they don’t fully empty. Eventually, they may become impacted. Sometimes the sacs become infected. “We express (empty) them, and then flush them with antibiotics,” Rubin says. “When there is a chronic problem, we also look at the possible effects of allergies, even the possibility of cancer, particularly in older dogs.” Surgical removal of the anal sacs is not a procedure to be taken likely. One potential complication might leave your dog incontinent. If you do ultimately opt for surgery, Rubin suggests you search for a surgeon with lots of experience at this procedure.

“LES MISERABLES”: If you’ve dreamed a dream of owning the screen version of the legendary stage musical based on Victor Hugo’s classic, the time has come. Anne Hathaway has earned numerous awards as the tragic Fantine, whose effect on Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) is profound as he tries to evade perpetually vengeful Inspector Javert (Russell Crowe). Much of the film’s impact comes from director Tom Hooper’s (“The King’s Speech”) decision to have the actors sing live to film. Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen and Samantha Barks (who also had the role of Eponine

on the London stage) are featured as well. DVD extras: three “making-of ” documentaries; audio commentary by Hooper. ***

“ZERO DARK THIRTY”: A subject of controversy during its theatrical run, this reunion of the Oscar-winning “Hurt Locker” team of director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal is an engrossing, often exciting dramatization of the hunt for Osama bin Laden. Jessica Chastain’s star rises higher with her intense performance as a CIA analyst who pursues her belief of the terrorist leader’s location - with her hunch ultimately prompting one of modern history’s most famous raids. The fine cast also includes Jason Clarke, Joel Edgerton, Kyle Chandler and Chris Pratt. DVD extras: four “making-of ” documentaries. ***

“THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY”: After his huge success with the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, director Peter Jackson returns to writer J.R.R. Tolkien’s territory with this epic-sized start to a three-film prequel. Martin Freeman plays Bilbo Baggins, swept into a quest by dwarves to help reclaim their turf. The tale also marks Bilbo’s first meeting with Gollum, played again by Andy Serkis. Other “Lord of the Rings” returnees include Elijah Wood, Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Ian Holm and Christopher Lee ... and the cast also features Benedict Cumberbatch, the television “Sherlock” to Freeman’s Dr. Watson. DVD extras: production videos. ***

“THIS IS 40”: They had supporting roles in “Knocked Up,” but Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann get center stage as they reprise the characters in writer-director Judd Apatow’s amusing comedy about reaching midllfe. The couple aren’t entirely happy about the situation, given the complications posed by their careers and their children. Jason Segel also returns from the first film in a cast that includes Melissa McCarthy, Megan Fox, John Lithgow, Albert Brooks and Lena Dunham (“Girls”). DVD extras: audio commentary by Apatow; deleted scenes; outtakes; music by Graham Parker and the Rumour, and Ryan Adams. ***

COINCIDENCE (continued):a bench. Picking it up, Hopkins found it was The

Girl from Petrovka. Two years later Hopkins was filming another movie when he was visited on the set by author George Feifer. Feifer complained that he no long had even a single copy of his own book because he loaned his final copy to a friend who lost it in London, adding it was particularly annoying because he had written notes in the margins. Hopkins, incredulous, handed Feifer the copy he had found. It was the self same book.

• Christina Cort lived in Salvador, Brazil in 1966 when an out-of-control truck crashed into her house. In 1989, she was still living in the same house when once again, an out-of-control truck crashed into it. It was the same truck driver who had barreled into her home 23 years earlier.

• Gosselin Delius of Brussels, Belgium was caught in a storm while sailing a yacht off the coast of England in 1988. His glasses fell overboard. Several weeks later he was reading a newspaper when he saw an article stating that Yan Gazelle of Belgium had caught a 13-pound monkfish, and found a pair of glasses inside it when he gutted it. The glasses, identified by their serial number, belonged to Delius. They were bent but usable.

• Otto Lewis, a lobsterman in Maine, lost his glasses when they fell overboard in the Atlantic. A few days later, a friend who was also a lobsterman returned them to him. He had found them in a lobster trap.

• Beatrice Lillie, famed British actress, was appearing in a stage play called “This Year of

Grace” in Ontario. During a matinee, the entire cast was on stage for the finale, in which Lillie sang, “Britannia Rules the Waves.” The cast lined up behind her, waiting for her to sing the final verse so they could move into their positions across the stage for the final curtain. However, they were shocked to hear Lillie repeating the second verse over again instead of going into the final moves. There was nothing to do but go along with her, and they marked time in the line across the back of the stage as she sang. Suddenly, a huge arc light fell from the ceiling, landing in the middle of the stage with a huge crash. Glass splattered across the stage where the cast would have been standing had Lillie not decided for an unknown reason to repeat the second verse.

• E.G. Steele of Weybridge, England, served in WWI. He was tried and punished for striking an officer. His punishment was to be tied to a gunwheel for one hour at sundown. Next to his camp was an Australian brigade who passed through their camp each evening to get to a nearby town. Several Australian men discovered Steele tied up, and decided it was ridiculous to tie a man up. One of them stepped forward to cut Steele loose. Steele noticed the man had two missing fingers on his left hand. A decade later, Steele was riding the New York subway when a man sat down next to him and they began to chat. Hearing his Australian accent, Steele began to tell him of his rescue in the war. The Australian interrupted, finished the story for him, and held up his left hand- which was missing two fingers. It was the same man.

▶ Canada has a longer coastline than any other country in the world, at 202,080 km (125,570 miles). That’s equal to 25 times the circumference of the earth.

▶ A beaver will cut down an average of 200 trees per year. Beaver teeth are orange because the enamel on the front of the teeth contains iron, making it tough. The

enamel on the back of the teeth does not contain iron, making it softer. As the beaver chews, the edge of the teeth where the hard part meets the softer part is honed to a chisel point.

▶ On some islands in the Arctic regions the permafrost layer is up to 700 m (3,000 ft) thick.

▶ What’s the biggest bird in Canada? Depends on how you measure. Whooping cranes are tallest at 2 m (6

ft); trumpeter swans are the heaviest, weighing 12 kg (26 lb); and American white pelicans have the biggest wingspan, up to 3 m (ten feet).

▶ In the town of Churchill, Manitoba, there are so many polar bears hanging out in the region during the autumn months that wildlife officials have set up a ‘polar bear jail.’ Nuisance adolescent bears are incarcerated to keep them out of trouble. When Hudson Bay freezes over, the bears are released to go on their way.
