Tresillian CoursesTresillian Community Centre
TERM THREE 201428 July – 19 September
Enrolments open Monday 30 June 2014
A much-loved meeting place – not only in the City of Nedlands but the broader community of Perth and country WA too –
Tresillian has been a vibrant and thriving community, cultural and learning centre for more than 30 years.
Before the Tresillian we know and love as a community and cultural centre today came into being, it had already been serving the community since 1929, first as a privately run ‘cottage’ and maternity hospital, then as a public hospital, run by the state government.
Nursing sisters Millie Bennett and Sabina Hayman may have named their hospital ‘Tresillian’ after the infant health training centre of the same name, run by The Royal Society for the Welfare of Mothers and Babies, in Sydney.
In 1933, the sisters added a wing to the building at Tyrell Street which was used as a maternity ward. In 1954, the state government bought the hospital from Sister Hayman, and it continued to be used for medical purposes in the years that followed.
The hospital eventually closed in 1974 and in 1978, the City of Nedlands bought the site. The City was then approached by a group of local people who had been running a learning centre nearby, sharing skills on a voluntary basis. Their organisation had outgrown its premises and they approached the City for use of the newly acquired building. The City agreed, thereby establishing Tresillian Community Centre.
The first programs by the newly named Tresillian Community Centre were offered in 1980. Among the 20 courses per term on offer were

dressmaking, needlecraft, bridge and mah jong. The instructors were volunteers who exchanged their time in return for studio facilities and the opportunity to display their craft. A café has also operated at Tresillian since its first year of operation.
Its studio tenants have been an important part of Tresillian Community Centre’s success since its inception. So too was the artist-in-residence program which ran from 1980 until 1995. In return for studio space and the opportunity to exhibit their works, studio artists taught of many of the classes on offer. This gives students the opportunity to learn from established artists.
Today, Tresillian offers about 70 courses for adults and children per term, in subjects ranging from languages, yoga and pilates to life drawing, painting, photography, pottery and many more. This term, the centre is expanding its arts program with new day courses – Contemporary Acrylics, Papier Maché Sculpture, Art for the Heart, Printmaking Sampler and Semi Abstract Acrylic Painting. There will also be new evening courses including Painting from Photographic Reference, Sculpted Expression, Ceramics – Wheel Throwing and Hand Building, and the Power of Pastels.
Tresillian remains a warm and inviting place for the community to come together to socialise, learn, create and flourish. Visit Tresillian today – everyone is welcome!
