Trentham take silver at the Science Olympics

Sofia Dawkins, Charlotte Perry, Esme Cheung, Jack Lloyd and Reuben Hookey competed for Trentham in the Science Olympics at Stoke 6th Form College this past week. Competing against schools from across the city in a whole day of Science events, our Trentham scientists excelled in a number of tasks. In the Physics boat building task, they applied Archimedes’ principle of floating and sinking to build a boat from card and a plastic sheet, that could hold 1.1 kg (nearly double the mass of any other school). Trentham also won the Biology competition outright for creating models of simple sugars against the clock finishing 2 minutes clear of their nearest rival.

Unfortunately however our two 4th places in Chemistry and Geology and Maths meant that we came 2nd.

Music and Taekwondo success

Jake Wright (Year 8, pictured above) has enjoyed a large amount of success recently. In music, he achieved Grade 2 trombone (merit). In drama, group musical theatre LAMDA exam, he achieved Grade 4 (merit) and Grade 4 solo (distinction); wonderful achievements, well done. He is also a keen martial artist and achieved his blue tab in taekwondo, featured on the right above.

Mathematics at Keele

Four year 8 students, Sophie-Mae Osborne, Sam Reeves, Sam Hawkes and Jonathan Hookey are attending the Royal Institution Mathematics Masterclasses at Keele University.  These are a series of workshops, over four Saturday mornings, which are led by experts from industry, academia and education. They offer these students an in-depth investigation of topics in Mathematics, combining theory with interactive exploration. They have already enjoyed one session; fantastic commitment well done.

Trentham Prom Dress Pledge

Trentham Academy featured on Radio Stoke on Monday 21st and in the Sentinel on Friday 26th January about our appeal for Prom outfits. We have been overwhelmed by the response from the community, businesses and other schools. We are determined at Trentham Academy to remove any barrier for our students to be able to celebrate the end of their time with us and we thank everyone who has responded for their kind words and generosity. The students are at the centre of everything we do, and this demonstrates the community spirit and care within our Academy.

Year 9 History Trip

A trip to the Staffordshire Regiment Museum (Wittington Barracks) took place on Tuesday 22nd. There were war items from the past right up to present day displayed. Students visited a 100m Section of the British front line in the trenches from WWI. They then went onto the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas. Students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were extremely respectful of the event and this has certainly enriched their understanding of this aspect of the curriculum.

Badminton Success

Congratulations to the badminton teams that have recently represented the school at the under 14 and under 16 National Schools Championships which were held at Clayton Sports Centre.

Trentham had a total of three teams qualify for the event and the pick of the bunch were the under 14 boys team who came a fantastic second on the day. The team is pictured below with heir silver medals. Well done!

In the under 16 category Trentham had qualified with a girls’ team and a boys’ team. On the day, our girls’ team did very well against opposition who were a year older than them. Unfortunately they did not progress to the final stages. The boys’ team narrowly lost out on a bronze medal and overall third place in what was a very keenly contested competition. Well done to all the students who competed at the competition.

Trentham Academy v Biddulph High School

The under 14 and under 16 badminton teams recently paid a visit to Biddulph High School. All the teams did very well on the evening with the eventual score- line being a victory to Trentham by 2 matches to 1. Well done to all the students who participated.

Under 14’s HockeyEXCEL Academy 2 – 2 Trentham Academy

On a bitterly cold night the under 14’s girls endured snow, sleet and freezing conditions to play this hockey match against EXCEL Academy. In a very good game, honours were shared on the evening. Well done to all who competed.

SPARK Day

On the 24th January we held another highly successful SPARK day.  All year groups took part in various PHSE lessons including first aid, extremism awareness, E-safety and drug awareness.  Year 10 students spent the whole day taking part in either an enterprise session held by NG Healthcare (one of our business partners, pictured below right) or a STEM project delivered by the science team (pictured below left); both sessions went down extremely well with students.  It was an enjoyable day for all and we have received lots of positive feedback so far.

Headteacher’s Notices

We would like to raise funds for Trentham Academy, and have attached the link to our ‘Goraise’ page: https://www.goraise.co.uk/talent/ . We would like you to register on this and when you do your online shopping, do it through this page. This will create income for the Academy, very much in the way that store loyalty cards work. It costs shoppers no extra but will be extremely valuable for the Academy. Please also share with friends and relatives. You can also access this from the Academy website. Your support and encouragement with this is warmly welcomed.

Date for your diary: 2nd February, Coffee Morning for parents to drop in and have a chat at 10.30 am. Please contact reception if you would like to book a place.

Our first Business Partnership meeting will be taking place on 1st of February 2018; we are looking forward to working with them on our Pre-Apprenticeship route to create real opportunities for our students who are looking to get into the world of work. Businesses are also supporting us in a number of other ways.

Trentham Academy is currently working with a number of Businesses that will offer staff and parents an opportunity to get a discount using the code CLT2018. I am hoping to place these on the website over the next few weeks. They range from car servicing through to will writing. Watch this space for more details of when this goes live.

The first meeting of our PTA (TALENT) will be taking place on the 29th January. It is exciting to see how this group could really bring about changes to the Academy. If you want to get involved or need any further information, please email Mrs V Taylor [email protected] or Jo Pearce PTA chair [email protected] .

It is also our Year 11 parents’ evening on Thursday 1st February starting at 5pm. We look forward to seeing you there and discussing your child’s progress and requirements for the summer exams.
