TREES- Gift Of Nature

Even the mighty elephant needsA Tree to scratch its bottom…..

‘GREEN ‘ represents the Forests which cover 30% of earth land masses and can be viewed from microscopic realm to global perspective.

Trees help to create both soils and atmosphere.

When a tree disappears so does everything that depends on them…..

Earth when viewed from satellite has predominant colors Blue, Green, White, Ochre

EARTH…

We all need Trees...

‘ TREE ‘ -Gift of nature to Man

‘Humanity has not yet reached the stage where it can survive without the Trees……”

TREES – Mixed Uses

Avenue Trees on either side of

Formal

Gardens Urban Public Spaces

Tree House

Trees can be used to create spaces having different characteristics. They can be used as a good design element

Hierarchy of Roads

Freeway

Arterial/ Highway

Local

Wider the roads , lesser the avenue trees………

Roads occupy good amount of urban spaces. There are 60 to 200 million spaces available to plant new trees along the roads…..

Road side Trees – World Context

Dubai

Barcelona

Norway

China

“ Tree around the road or road around the Tree “

Giant Tree of

Ideas can be borrowed from different countries To maximize green cover along Roads……

Road side Trees – Indian Context

It is said in Indian scriptures : a householder must perform panch yajnas – 5 daily sacrifices, of which BHUTA YAJNA – is feeding of and taking care for animals and plant

Baroda/ Vadodara is named after ‘ Vad - Banyan tree ‘

Chandigarh- Roads are named after the avenue trees planted

21% OF INDIA HAS FORESTS40% OF FOREST FALLS UNDER OPEN DEGRADED FOREST3% OF INDIA IS UNDER TREE COVER

Road side Common Avenue Trees - INDIA

1. Banyan, Pepal, Tamarind- Life Span is 1000 years

2. Badam- seed for oil, construction, Tasarsilk worm feed.

3. Peltophorum – fast growing, yellow flowerfeathery canopy

4. Legumnoseae ( flame of forest ) – Gulal, leaf plates, scorpian bites

5. Gulmohur – Delonis Regia -Flower of paradise

6. Cassia Fistula- Medicinal, dropping yellow sprays

7. Jamun – Fast growing , good spreads

8. Jacranda – Ornamental- purple flowers

9. Silk Cotton Tree-Cotton

10. Neem- Medicinal, oil, toothpaste, symbolizes health

Slower the growth of the tree

,Longer is their life span……”Some of our trees live for 1000 yrs should we not open our hearts and minds to this before we hold an AXE in our hands !

Road side Trees – Andhra Pradesh Context

• Hyderabad a 400 yrs old city built on bank of Musi River a seat of Nizams.• Iranian architects help to build a Garden City ex : Public Garden- ZOO, Basheer Bagh, Kishan Bagh, Jam Bagh, Zeba Bagh Etc.• Role of Avenue trees were focused from times of ‘ Chandbibi ‘ – a Qutab Shahi

princess where Banyan trees were planted on vikarabad Highway-Now all have been axed….

Hyderabad on Musi River….

PILLALUMARI – at Mahabubnagar- 3 acres spread

‘KADIUM – 750 nurseries , the largest in Asia , located in Andhra Pradesh.

Shouldn’t Andhra Pradesh be the Greenest

SACRED GROOVES -

Andhra Pradesh alone has 750 sacred grooves

NEWS EXTRACTS

So Where do we stand today ?

Hindu- Chennai : ““ AFTER ONIONS, TAMATOTAMARIND PRICES SKYROCKETED……………… “

60 % to 70% Tamrind trees are axed down which come from Avenue Trees…

Times of India : Axe falls on Sainikpuri Trees, Local residents blame AFOCHS responsible for maintaining are felling down trees.

Bangalore : 850 Trees chopped to widen jayamahal Road

Mysore : 209 Trees axed on Lalit Mahal RoadMumbai, Delhi, Coimbatore etc it’s the same story …………….

TAMRIND

LOCAL PARAMETERS

Trees felled to dig way for Services

“” GANAPATI BAPA MORIYA “

• The significance of this festival to balance the eco-system of ponds• Today the statue scale to large proportions.• The branches of avenue trees are axed to accommodate these statues.• I suggest the height of the statue could be restricted so that there is a balance between important celebration of religion and ecology

Holika - Trees on fire

‘ Benefits of trees on urban roads ‘

‘ROAD SIDE TREES’ –can increase Road safety …..

‘ TREE plantation on road side reduces air pollutant concentration on roads , hence roads need higher density of Avenue Plantations !!

1. Tall Trees give the perception of narrow streets , slowing people down .

2. Closely spaced Trees give the perception of speed slowing people down.

3. A treeless road enhances the perception of road being wide and free of hazard, thereby increasing speeds, hence more accidents

4. Trees can serve as buffer between moving vehicles and pedestrians .

5. Road side Trees forewarn drivers of upcoming curves6. The asphalt paving on Roads contains stone aggregate in an oil

binder. Without tree shade , the oil heats up and volatizes leaving the aggregate unprotected. Thus increasing maintenance and reconstruction of roads.

TREES- VALUE ADDITION

1. People linger and shop longer along tree line roads

2. Net cooling effect = ten room size AC’s operating 20 hours a day.

3. Can reduce AC costs to 30 %

4. If planted in west side house , in 3 yrs energy bills reduced to 3% and in 15 yrs by 12%

5. Strong and moderate impact on stability of structure ( Stop Erosion )

6. Increases property value by 5-15 % and in suburbs property value increases by 18 % by having trees.

6. One acre of forest absorbs 6 T of CO2 puts out 4T of O2 enough for 19 people

7. Stimulates economic development for tourism

8. Stress relievers

Publicly owned TREES are assets of any urban fabric

CARBON FOOTPRINT CALCULATOR ….

1. It takes 17.5 trees per person to produce sufficient oxygen for survival

2. 20 Trees per person to consume CO2 each person generates.

3. A healthy tree stores 13 lbs of CO2 annually pr 2.6 T per acre each year.

4. If every person planted one tree the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere would be reduced by one billion lbs annually = 5% of amount of human activity pumps into atmosphere every year

5. Estimated carbon emitted per vehicle = 0.88 lbs

A person generates 2.3 Tons CO2 each year,5 Trees have to be planted per person

!!

One tree cut of urban area = 15 trees in forest

COST FACTORS

1. Over a 50 yr life time a Tree generates• Rs 14,00,000 worth O2• Provides Rs 30,00,000 worth of air pollution

control• Recycles Rs 15,00,000 worth of water• Controls Rs 14,00,000 worth of soil erosion.

2. Council of Trees and landscape appraises mature tree value as Rs 50,000 to Rs 5,00,000

3. Slurry seal cost of asphalt roads is Rs 22,50,000 linear mile . Oil does not dry fast in shaded Roads.

4. As Trees strengthen urban community , in chicago, the Government spent $ 10 million to plant 20,000 Trees.

5. In India a 8’ Tree average cost is Rs 1000 and Transplanting a Tree costs Rs 3000 per Tree

Planting a ‘ TREE’ is a cheapest, most effective means of drawing excess CO2 from the atmosphere !!

TREE - MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONS

As trees live 1000 years or more is it not wise to transplant existing trees….

A Tree transplant at Hyderabad would cost Rs 3500 and a new Plant of 7’ Ht purchased at kadium would cost Rs 1000

Tree Banks

Tree Spade

TRANSPLANTATION OF TREES

DESIGN SOLUTIONSRoad expansion At the medianZone….( adopted In China )

Retaining existing avenue Trees and road expansion as a shoulder Road.

RE ENGINEERING ROAD TRAFFIC & BYE-LAWS

Re engineering the way we move people in our cities can avoid the need to widen the roads

Street Plantation of trees with wide spread canopy to shade cars

Evolve systems to move peopleAnd not vehicles………………

Encourage people to plant shade trees in front spaces as part of building regulation…………..

We could also suggest that one plant sapling as compensation for the pollution due to vehicles2 wheeler- plants 2 saplings4 wheelers-plants 4 saplings

AWARENESS OF TREE PLANTATION

Retaining existing avenue Trees and road expansion as a shoulder Road.

So how do I respond to “ TREES “ ?Every fortnight I go to this spiritual centre at bandalguda and plant the saplings of kadamba. They have now grown 12 feet ht.

I am aware that the exchange of 50 gm seedling for a forest giant of 5 lakhs tonnes is like offering a mouse in place of elephant !!

One person should plant :

17.5 Trees in his life time to be cost neutral for oxygen

20 Trees to cover the Carbon dioxide he is producing in his life time.

5 Trees have to be planted per person

Bringing Back Nature Into Our Urban BackyardIF NOT NOW , WHEN THEN ...… ??
