THE DIAGNOSIS OF DROWNING IN SEA WATER

Measurements of Mg ions in C.S.F. were performed in 82 cases of drowning in sea water and 20 in fresh water. The values obtained were higher in all the cases of drowning in sea water, while the Mg ion concentra. tion was normal in all other cases.

The increase of Mg ions in C.S.F. in cases of drowning in sea water is independent of the time of immersion of the body and of the time after death.

Infra-red and ultra-violet photography are the normal methods used to recover erased or obliterated writing. There are, however, a number of cases where conventional methods fail.

The use of filters, masking techniques and special lighting can often be applied in these cases with considerable success, and examples of these are demonstrated.

These successes show that the forensic photographer must never be content to use conventional techniques only, but must be ready to experiment and often break the accepted rules of photography to achieve the desired result.

Crovitz, E. (Durham, N. Car., U.S.A.) TREATMENT OF THE TRANSSEXUAL .AND MEDICOLEGAL ISSUES

The carnival, stage or masquerade ball are the only situations where a male is tolerated in assuming the female role, or vice versa, in Western society. The transsexual, finding it impossible to maintain his or her self esteem is given the opportunity to resolve a profound dilemma through this new medical procedure of sex reassignment.

Endocrine therapy and conversion surgery raise medicolegal issues illustrative of the difference in perspective between medicine and the law. The non-judgmental and prosecuting tradition of law produce attitudes difficult to reconcile in dealing with legal issues that arise in transsexual treatment.

This paper deals with the issues of the legal ramifications of cross- dressing as part of treatment, transsexual surgery and its exposure to the possibility of legal prosecution, and finally documentary alterations such as birth certificate changes.
