O Upsherin means to "shear off" in Yiddish.
It is derived from the German wordsscheren which means "to shear" and auf

Coming of Age: Bar and Bat

But upon turning 13, aboy is considered an adult under the lawand is expected to obey all thecommandments from then on. He hasbecome a Bar Mitzvah, or "Son of theCommandments."
