Saturday 29th May – Sunday 6th June 2010
A nine-day festival celebrating our hidden multi-faith treasures
2010in Kirklees
TREASURESREVEALED
FESTIVAL GUIDE
Introduction
Ever wondered what’s inside a Mosque, Church, Hindu Temple,
Sikh Gurdwara or Buddhist Centre?
Places of worship have been at the heart of our communities for thousands of years and continue to play a vitally important social, economic, and spiritual role in our modern society.
For many people faith is a way of life, giving them a sense of belonging, identity and a sense of the common values of selfl essness and service which bind humankind. Faith can promote understanding and respect of others and nourishes that personal spiritual dimension which helps to give meaning, purpose and hope to our lives.
Kirklees Faiths Forum supports and encourages faith and interfaith groups across Kirklees. Through the Treasures Revealed partnership we extend a warm welcome to local residents and visitors. So why not pay us a visit? You may just fi nd a hidden treasure or two for yourself …

All Saints’ Church opened in 1875 to serve the local community and is part of the ancient parish of High Hoyland. It contains stained glass windows by Charles Kempe, a beautiful screen behind the altar celebrating Celtic Saints and the Wintour Memorial commemorating the Battle of Jutland. The pulpit is made of Caen stone supported by alabaster pillars and was given in memory of Revd. F.T.Wintour, Rector of the parish from 1867 to 1898. There is also a board with the names of the Rectors of High Hoyland dating back to the 12th Century. For some of the time there are 2 Rectors shown on the board, as the church was left to the founder’s 2 daughters and each had the right to present a Rector. All the carvings in the church were made by local craftsmen.

All Saints’ Church is situated in the centre of this Pennine Hill village, 2 miles from Holmfi rth. Built in 1829-30 at a cost of £2,869 it is a Grade 2 listed building. There have been alterations over the years, the most recent being meeting rooms, kitchens and toilets incorporated within the building. There is an attractive churchyard with interesting gravestones, beautiful trees and extensive views over the local countryside. Many family historians are interested in the rolls of honour from WW1 and the burial register for the graveyard, which include many of those who died in the workhouse, situated on the edge of the village of Deanhouse.

Christchurch was built in the early nineteenth century in the Gothic style. Paid for by the fi rst Vicar, the Rev Hammond Roberson the church cost just over £7000 in 1817. Rev Roberson was anxious that a new church should be built to serve the spiritual needs of workers in the new textile mills in the Spen Valley.
The church bells were made from bronze recycled from captured French canon from the battle of Genoa, fought during the Napoleonic Wars. There is a fi ne rood screen with carving of northern saints and a notable organ.

The Georgian Parish Church with its clock tower stands proudly on a hill side overlooking the village. We cater for both tradtitional and modern styles of worship by following a varied pattern with both a robed choir and a music group. The building has some fi ne stained glass, a sculptured reredos of the Last Supper, a stone credence and font and a high pulpit more suited to a previous age. Various groups, both secular and church use the building during the week and we are always looking for ways to forge connections with the community.

The Church has been a centre of worship since 1868. We are a United Benefi ce with St Paul’s, Shepley in the Kirkburton Deanery of the Anglican Diocese of Wakefi eld. The foundation stone was laid by the 5th Earl of Dartmouth of 23rd August 1866 and the Church was dedicated by the Lord Bishop of Ripon on September 9th 1868. The building, as with many Victorian village churches, is of a simple design built of local stone and has been altered over the years to suit the worship patterns of the time. The present meeting house stands on the walls of a barn fi rst used by ‘Seekers’ during the 1640s. They met in this hidden place because their rejection of Church of England practice was illegal. From 1652 the Seekers evolved to become Quakers, because they ‘quaked in the power of the Lord’.
At one time Quakers owned all the properties around the meeting house. They ran a school for fi fty boys in the 1700s and used Mill Bank as a home for inebriate women during the late 1800s. Nearby, Strines Guest House became an early youth hostel.
Quaker Meetings are open to all and are held in silence.

Our aims are to celebrate the Hindu religion and culture whilst fostering harmonious relations with all faiths and communities.
We celebrate our excellent relationships within our diverse community and strive to work together for all faiths to prosper.
The Hindu faith empowers the individual to choose their own path to realise God. This can involve elements such as worship, yoga and voluntary service.
We believe that the whole of mankind is one universal family and we must uphold the values of respect, cooperation and acceptance.

The Methodist Mission building is new – opened in 2000. It is a replacement for one in King Street which was compulsorily purchased by Kirklees Metropolitan Council to make way for the Kings Gate Shopping Centre. The Mission has always had a social entrepreneurial spirit, from penny banks and cripples guild in the 1920’s, mother & baby home in the 1930’s and 40’s – through to Coffee Bar Drop-In in the 1970s and the current Welcome Centre to meet crisis-needs in the town centre, and the Computer Facility using modern technology to raise the self esteem of our contacts through the Café and Welcome Centre.

Huddersfi eld Christian Fellowship is a town-centre based church in West Yorkshire with a growing congregation comprising of people from various social, cultural and religious backgrounds. Our Sunday morning services typically attract 700 to 800 worshippers from 24 different nationalities.
The church has just moved into a brand new facility, Cathedral House, designed to seat 2100 in the main auditorium. The building also houses a bookshop, coffee shop, children’s play gym, conference facilities with onsite parking, disabled access and a state of the art sound and translation system. It is believed to be the largest purpose built church facility in England since Guildford Cathedral in the 1930s and it is hoped that it will become a haven for the community.

The Mosque was established in 1999. The building was an old disused pub and was bought from the brewery. Extensive refurbishments took place to convert this building into a two storey Mosque to provide prayer areas for both men and women.
There is large fully functional kitchen and separate entrances for men and women.
Since the building was purchased the congregation of worshippers is growing rapidly, therefore plans to extend the building to accommodate more worshippers and provide facilities for the disabled as being drawn up.
There is parking at both front and back of the Mosque.

Huddersfi eld Parish church is the third church to be built on this site, where Christians have met to worship for almost 1000years. The main beauty of the church, the east window and baldachino, were both designed by Sir Ninian Comper in memory of the fallen of the First World War. The Elizabethan font is dated 1570 and its cover is said to date from 1640. The carved panelling of the gallery probably dates from the second church to stand on this site. At Huddersfi eld Parish Church music is of the highest importance in our worship and we are fortunate to have a wonderful choir including many university students. The organ, originally installed by Conachers in 1908, was rebuilt in 1984 by Philip Wood of Huddersfi eld.

There have been Methodists in Meltham for well over 200 years. Our present building may not be of architectural merit, but it is a practical ‘treasure’ for our church and community, built by the hard work and dedication of many people. It stands next to the original 1819 chapel (now fl ats/offi ces).
The talents of children and adults in our congregation come together for this festival celebrating the treasure in our midst. Bring a picture, poem, model or other artwork to add to a display on the theme ‘My treasure is...’, or be inspired to create one in our art corner.
Masjid-e-Noor is one of eight established faith centres hosting visits for schools through the Interfaith Kirklees (Schools) educational learning project. The mosque has also hosted visits for adults and community groups. For the Treasures Revealed week, visitors are welcome to come to the mosque between 10-11 on Saturday, Sunday and Monday to have a look around and ask the experienced host at the mosque any questions.

Open air preaching commenced in Berry Brow under the shadow of a large rock, and in 1824 Rock Chapel was opened next to it. By the 1880’s a new chapel was built on Birch Road and opened in 1893. In the 1960’s, with high maintenance and heating costs, the Chapel was demolished and the schoolroom converted to a Chapel and a “Community Room’’ built on. This new Church opened in 1981. Recently the premises have had a “makeover”. The building incorporates a window made in memory of “Little Abe - The Bishop of Berry Brow”, a famous 19th century local preacher.

The Church was built in the 1820s and was one of the “Waterloo” churches built at a cost of £3000 and paid for by a government grant to celebrate British Victory at the battle of Waterloo. The original church structure, the tower and nave, is currently under restoration, and these repairs will be completed by the end of April 2009. The current chancel was built in the early twentieth century, and its rich decoration contrasts with the plain and simple 1820s nave. The Lady Chapel boasts four fi ne windows depicting angels that were designed by the pre Raphaelite artist, Edward Burne Jones.

St John’s is a Saxon foundation and a Grade II* Listed building. The oldest parts are the14th Century Beaumont Chapel, with monuments to the Beaumont family, including the infamous ‘Black Dick’, and the 15th Century Tower. There is the original Norman Font, a 12th cent gravestone of the De Heton family and much good Victorian stained glass (all dating from after the fi re of 1886). There is also the only WW1 and WW2 War Memorial in Kirkheaton.
There is a well-preserved graveyard, the earliest gravestone being 1624. In the graveyard is the monument to the 17 children who perished in the Atkinson Mill fi re of 1818, which became a cause for Richard Ostler and his group. Immediately opposite is the Beaumont Arms (still known to many by its earlier name of the ‘Kirkstile’). This was formerly a ‘church house’ and is a Grade 1 Listed building.

The style of architecture is deceptive as the building was intended to blend well with the neighbouring Hopton Hall, and thus it takes on the appearance of a 15th century church. The interior fi ttings also carry on this illusion, with many later additions appearing like they’ve been there for centuries. In 1904, the churchyard was extended up to where the archway now stands.

St. Mark’s has beautiful stained glass windows. One of these is dedicated to Mary Sumner, founder of the Mother’s Union. It is said to be the only window of its kind in the country. A second unique window depicts Richard Oastler (1789-1861), the famous campaigner for the rights of working children. Situated on the West wall is a large memorial window. Worthy of note is a Biggin Hill plaque in memory of Squadron Leader Guy Turner, a former choirboy of St. Mark’s. Children enjoy searching for the ‘Thompson’ mice on various pieces of furniture.

St Mary’s church is situated in the village of Gomersal, which is part of the Spen Valley area. The village history has links to the “Brontes of Haworth”, with Anne Taylor being buried in the churchyard.
The church was built in 1851, with an Epiphany chapel added in 1969.
In 2004 the church was reordered and the cleaning of the stonework has brought to light some very interesting features with fi ne examples of Victorian craftsmanship including a lovely refurbished font and examples of the work of the Mouseman, Robert Thompson, of Kirby.

The Church here meets in this wonderful building, dedicated to Mary, the mother of Jesus. Both the people and the building aim to make God known to his world today.
The present church, consecrated in 1871 by the Bishop of Ripon, is the third to stand on the site of Castle Hall, granted as one of 214 manors to the de Lacy family after William the Conqueror seized it from Lord Alruic.
There is a lot to see at our church; the marble and granite front, the Mirfi eld Stone, carved on four sides and dating from the l0th / llth century, the many examples of Victorian stained glass windows with their own legends. Outside see the clock, the Castle Hall Motte, and extensive graveyard.
Standing about 100 yards east of the church is the Parish Centre, opened in 1973. It is much used by Church and community groups and for social functions. For more information: www.cofe-mirfi eld.org.uk

There has been a church here since at least the 9th century. The oldest surviving parts of the church are the 15th-century tower, chancel and chancel chapels. The Savile chapel on the north was fi rst built in 1447 and extended eastwards in 1493. The south chapel was built in 1491 and the chancel was remodeled ‘clerestoried and arched’ by 1499. the nave of the church, probably an anglo-saxon or norman structure modifi ed and enlarged in the l3th century, was pulled down in the 18th century and a Georgian preaching box built. . It was rebuilt again in 1877-9 by the architect G.E Street who also added the pres-ent south porch and vestry.

We are a busy Parish church seeking to trust God, love one another, and serve our community. Our recently renovated building now contains an area at the back of church for social gatherings, such as our weekly coffee mornings. We area also pleased to welcome anyone who wishes to step aside from the “busyness” of life to spend a few moments in prayer and refl ection, or to light a candle in prayer for someone. We have a splendid East window which visitors might like to see, which illustrates the Gospel message in vibrant colours.

Victorian Building. Attractive stained glass window of St Paul at the heart of the village – sensitively modernised. St Paul’s was consecrated in 1848 and like many Victorian village churches is of a simple design. The architect was William Wallen who had designed many buildings in the Huddersfi eld area. The church is built of local stone and has a bell cote containing two bells. The chancel was added in 1868 and extended into the nave in 1890. There are several stained glass windows, noticeably the east window which depicts scenes from the life of St Paul. St Paul’s stands in the centre of the village and has been altered over the years to suit the worship pattern of the time. Moving forward remains our aim, whilst still retaining our sense of history.

Meltham Baptist Church was founded in 1813. During the nineteenth century several important developments took place regarding the building, including the construction of a large two storey chapel. Due to serious fabric problems the chapel was demolished in the late 1960’s. The present building, erected in 1910, was originally designed to be the Sunday school. In the last 50 years the building has been renovated and refurbished to provide a pleasant worship area and several adjacent rooms. At the rear of the building there is a number of other rooms, which comprised part of the fi rst chapel, built in 1816.

It hosts a large recreation hall and several classrooms, but is probably better known for its family history library which has its own extensive records with access to millions more.
