A record-setting crowd of more than 11,700 transportation professionals, researchers, and policy makers attended more than 750 sessions and workshops on topics from Super- storm Sandy to the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21). Approximately 40 ses- sions explored the theme of “Deploying Transportation Research: Doing Things Smarter, Better, Faster” and committee meetings, major award presentations, and exhibits provided opportunities for attendees to share knowledge and insights. A new TRB Annual Meeting mobile application allowed participants to view sessions and events, nav- igate interactive floor plans, and create a personalized schedule—the “app” was downloaded more than 8,000 times before and during the meeting. Other nav- igation tools included an interactive Google map, a Compendium of Papers flash drive, Annual Meeting Online, and Facebook and Twitter updates. Consultant John P. DeployingTransportation ResearchDoing Things Smarter, Better, Faster

Face-to-face interaction and technological inno-vation converged at the Transportation ResearchBoard’s 92nd Annual Meeting, January 13–17,

2013, in Washington, D.C. A record-setting crowd ofmore than 11,700 transportation professionals,researchers, and policy makers attended more than750 sessions and workshops on topics from Super-storm Sandy to the Moving Ahead for Progress in the21st Century Act (MAP-21). Approximately 40 ses-sions explored the theme of “Deploying TransportationResearch: Doing Things Smarter, Better, Faster” andcommittee meetings, major award presentations, andexhibits provided opportunities for attendees to shareknowledge and insights.

Deborah H. Butler, ExecutiveVice President, Planning,and Chief Information Offi-

cer, Norfolk Southern Corporation,is the 2013 Chair of the TRB Exec-utive Committee. Kirk T. Steudle,Director, Michigan Department ofTransportation (DOT), is the 2013Vice Chair.

Butler, who joined NorfolkSouthern in 1978, served as VicePresident of Customer Servicebefore assuming her current posi-tion. She received a bachelor’sdegree from Agnes Scott College inDecatur, Georgia, and completed executive educationprograms at Northwestern University’s TransportationCenter, the Fuqua School of Business at Duke Uni-versity, and the Harvard Business School. Butler serveson the Board of Trustees of Virginia Wesleyan College,on the Board of Directors of TTX Company, and as aCommissioner on the Norfolk Airport Authority. Shealso is past Chair of the National Grain Car Council,which is chartered by the U.S. Congress and the Sur-face Transportation Board.

Steudle has been involved in all aspects of trans-portation in the State of Michigan since becoming DOTDirector in 2006. He is chair of the Strategic HighwayResearch Program Oversight Committee for TRB andhas served on the Executive Committee since 2004.Past president of the American Association of StateHighway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) andcurrent AASHTO Executive Committee member, Steu-dle also serves on the Board of Directors of the Intelli-gent Transportation Society of America and theEngineering Society of Detroit and as Chair of the Uni-versity of Michigan Transportation Research InstituteAdvisory Board. He graduated from Lawrence Techno-logical University with a bachelor’s degree in construc-

tion engineering and, in 2012, wasinducted into the school’s Engineer-ing Hall of Fame. He is a registeredProfessional Engineer in Michigan.
