One of Australia’s most gifted violinists, Dorcas McClean (1917 – 1981) began her musical studies at the age of three at the New South Wales Conservatorium. By the age of eight, she was already appearing as a soloist at public concerts in Sydney, as well as performing for numerous radio broadcasts. Her brother Hugh and sister Georgina were also talented violinists and together the family often performed chamber concerts. When she was twelve, Dorcas caused a sensation at a choral concert in Sydney with her performance of the Finale from the Concerto No. 2 in D minor by Wieniaski and was hailed by critics as a child virtuoso.

Determined to provide her children with the best possible violin training, Mrs McClean travelled to London with young Dorcas, Georgina and Hugh in 1932 where they were enrolled at the Royal College of Music in the studio of Isolde Menges, a prominent English concert violinist and pupil of Leopold Auer. While in Europe, each enjoyed active concert careers before returning to Australia in 1939.

Shortly before her death, Dorcas McClean expressed her wish to establish a scholarship to advance the musical education of young Australian violinists. Following the bequest of her estate, the Travelling Scholarship for Violinists was established by the University of Melbourne in honour of this brilliant musician and dedicated patron of the arts.

The ScholarshipThe Dorcas McClean Travelling Scholarship for Violinists seeks to support the musical education of outstanding young violinists through the provision of travelling scholarships and prizes to support those judged most talented at the beginning of their professional careers. The Scholarship is open to all violinists aged 25 and under at the closing date for applications, who have been resident in Australia for no less than two years.

SelectionApplications to the Dorcas McClean Traveling Scholarship for Violinists were screened earlier this year by an outstanding panel charged with the difficult task of nominating six semi-finalists for participation in the competition. The talented young artists

selected will be presented in two evening recitals at Melba Hall, August 1 and 2 at 7.00pm. The jury will advance three contestants to the Final Round on August 5 at the Melbourne Recital Centre, where they will appear as concerto soloists with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Brett Kelly. The competition will begin at 7.30pm and awards will be announced at its conclusion.

AwardsThe winner of the competition will receive $40,000 toward their future education abroad. Second and third placing performers will receive $10,000 and $5,000 respectively.
