School Travel Forum

Travelbound is a full member of the STF, which is a group of leading school tour operators that promote good practice and safety in school travel. All STF Assured Members are audited annually by independent experts to evidence compliance to our Safety Management System which includes assessment of third party suppliers.

Since its inception, the STF has won widespread recognition and supportof the ASCL, ATL, NAHT, NUT and Voice for the way it simplifies and provides essential reassurance for leaders looking to organise study trips. It is also welcomed by the Outdoor Education Advisors Panel (OEAP), the Learning Outside of the Classroom Council (LOtC) and the Department for Children and Families (DCSF).

History & BattlefieldsTake your history lessons to another level with one of our inspiring history tours. History fires pupils’ curiosity and imagination, moving and inspiring them with the dilemmas, choices and beliefs of people in the past. Promoting your tourWe will happily offer your group promotional posters and personalised presentations to help promote the tour – to develop student interest and reach the required numbers. We will supply full excursion information for your chosen destination, enabling you to fulfil any National Curriculum requirements. Holding a parents evening is a very important part of the tour process and we will happily arrange for a member of our sales team to visit your school and assist where necessary. It is paramount that fellow teachers, parents and students are aware of the tour on offer and have the opportunity to ask any questions relating to the trip.

Help with risk assessmentsWe are always on-hand to support you with every aspect of your tour. As educational travel experts we can offer advice on how to complete your specific risk assessments and health and safety paperwork. Your tour coordinator will be your main point of contact and is on-hand to discuss, or answer, any queries you may have regarding the finer details of your trip – such as transportation, rooming, excursions and anything else that may need addressing.

Contact us within 3 weeks of making the provisional booking and send us the completed booking form, along with the relevant deposit amount. At this stage, you will be introduced to your dedicated tour coordinator who has specialised knowledge on your chosen destination. They will forward a confirmation pack and book all the components of your tour to ensure that you receive a trip of a lifetime.

Enjoying an excellent location in the beautiful Normandy countryside; the Château is 14kms from Bayeux and within easy reach of the world famous Calvados coast. In addition to excellent on-site activities and language learning opportunities, groups can visit the cemeteries and museums commemorating the D-Day Landings of WW11 and explore the theme of William the Conqueror.

Tour co-ordinators top tips!The Château disco is an extremely popular way to end any trip to Normandy. The students love dressing up and enjoying the non-alcoholic cocktails on sale at the bar. Bring some pocket money as souvenirs and gifts are also on sale at the Château. We highly recommend wearing old clothes for all the on-site activities and slippers for indoor wear – after all, we want you to feel at home here! If time permits, try and include a visit to a French market or the goat’s cheese farm - both offering a unique local experience. Alternatively, an evening out at the modern bowling alley in Bayeux is a firm favourite with our groups. With so much to see and do in the area, we can work with you to plan your tour and pre-book all your excursions and activities.

The Château du MolayOur exclusive 18th century Château is set within 38 acres of beautiful private parkland and can accommodate 195 guests in 42 en-suite bedrooms. The Château facilities include a large restaurant, meeting rooms, a library, games room, various lounge areas, classrooms and party leaders’ bar. Further facilities include a heated swimming pool, a Grade A football / rugby pitch and an all-weather sports court for tennis, basketball and 5-a-side football.

Our top cross-curricular itineraryDay 1: Depart school by coach and travel to France. Arrive at the impressive Château du Molay, your home for the next three nights. Enjoy some in-house entertainment.

Day 2: Spend the morning discovering the medieval town of Bayeux, visiting popular sites including the Bayeux Tapestry and the British Military Cemetery; a town trail is available. In the early afternoon visit a local goat’s cheese farm to see the milking and production process and adorable goats. Back to the château for an exciting activity session such as Circus skills frenzy. Tonight, when in France, try some frogs legs and snails!

Day 3: Experience the unforgettable Arromanches 360 degree cinema and D day Landing Museum before heading off to the impressive German gun battery at Longues-Sur-Mer. Time for reflection at the moving American Military Cemetery at Omaha Beach, scene of one of the bloodiest battles of D day. Enjoy a farewell disco evening.

Day 4: Depart the château, visiting the Pegasus Bridge Memorial and hypermarket en-route, before returning home with some great memories and having made new friends.

Top on-site activities guaranteed to inspire

The Great Château BBQ!A firm favourite with all our groups! A large selection of BBQ classics are served, including sausages, chicken wings, burgers, salads, pasta salad and desserts, providing the perfect accompaniment to a summer’s evening in the Château grounds.

How to CookGroups can find out how to cook food and dishes such as Cassoulet de Toulouse, pizza and French bread using a traditional outdoor oven. All practical instruction will be given by the Château’s very own Head Chef.

Taste traditional French cuisineSnails and frogs’ legs are served as an accompaniment to an evening meal, allowing adventurous students the chance to try a traditional French delicacy that may or may not taste like chicken!

French Market AssignmentOrganised teams of intrepid students are given a sum of money to scour the local market for cold-buffet ingredients. Preparation takes place back at the Château where dishes will be judged and awarded with certificates.

Crêpe & Cider NightThe apple pressers of Calvados make delicious cider and apple juice. Of course, the local crêpes aren’t bad either and groups can learn how to cook this famous French pancake.

French Cheese please…It wouldn’t be a trip to France without trying the local cheese! Cheese-boards can be served after your evening meal. Students will receive a worksheet so they can answer questions about the wide variety of cheeses available.

French language lessons and assignmentsOur French language lessons are tailored to suit the level of your group’s ability. Subsequent assignments are task-based and linked to the subject matter learned in class, covering topics such as: understanding money, exploring a market and shopping for food.

Travelbound’s Young Reporter CourseThis hands-on language course is exclusive to Travelbound and enables students to research a theme prior to conducting and recording interviews with the locals.

The Château ClassroomOur classroom is at your disposal for meetings, lessons and presentations. A range of teaching aids, including white-board and flip-chart, allow classes to take place in a comfortable and educational environment.

Games RoomEveryone needs a break and our games room is perfect for spending a few moments battling aliens, playing pool or table football. This is not an ‘adult free zone’ and beating the top score on the driving game is a must for competitive party leaders!

Sports facilitiesLovers of 5-a-side football, tennis and basketball will be in their element at the Château multi-purpose sports court. The beautiful green grass of our full-size rugby and football pitch is also available for afternoon sporting purposes.

Outdoor Swimming PoolOur outdoor heated pool is the perfect way to cool off after a full day exploring the local attractions. Surrounding non-slip decking is provided for safety and a life guard is always in attendance when groups are in the pool. (Open end of May to beginning of September only)

Plant a Tree on Eco AvenueAll groups visiting the Château du Molay have the opportunity to plant a fruit tree, complete with name plaque, which one day we hope will provide sustainable, very local, produce for our Château kitchen!

Evening Entertainment So what happens when the sun goes down? Don’t panic! The Château activities team are on-hand to organise popular fun and games, such as talent shows, karaoke and our famous Château disco!

ArcheryYoung archers will be supervised by our trained instructor and will learn about aspects of modern archery on three archery targets in the Château grounds.

Circus FrenzyPupils learn how to become circus performers as they practise fun activities including devil sticks, plate-spinning and bubble blowing!

Initiative ExercisesLots of fiendishly deceptive schemes to encourage lateral thinking and teamwork! See if your team can work out: Giant’s Fingers, Birthday Bench and the Spider’s web.

Blind TrailParticipants are blindfolded and take it in turns to lead their team through a rope course, in between trees and around obstacles. Great fun and requires trust, teamwork and a high level of communication.

SurvivalGiven a disaster scenario pupils need to quickly establish priorities, work as a team and make some important decisions to ensure ‘survival’.

Top excursions guaranteed to inspire

Bayeux and the Bayeux Tapestry Bayeux has a vibrant market on a Wednesday and Saturday and many fine examples of medieval architecture. The Bayeux Tapestry is the most important relic to survive from the 11th century, although the stitched chronicle of the battle of Hastings is alive with controversy and myth!

The Musée Mémorial de la Bataille de NormandieThis museum is located in Bayeux and covers the military events immediately following the Landings. The exhibition features equipment, uniforms, a chronological presentation and a 25 minute film of archive material, explaining how the battle unfolded from 7th June to 29th August 1944.

360 degree Cinema, ArromanchesThis 360 degrees cinema documents the Allies’ landing on the Normandy beaches. The 20 minute film ‘The price of Freedom’ combines footage filmed in 1944 with present images shot in the same, now peaceful, locations.

D-Day Landing Museum, Arromanches The D-Day museum was the first of its kind to be built in commemoration of the 6th June 1944. Built on the site of the artificial harbour, its vestiges can still be seen a few hundred yards away from the museum.

Le Memorial de CaenBuilt on the side of an old bunker, the Caen Memorial provides a thought-provoking meditation on the evils of war, the importance of learning from past failures and successes, and the difficulty but necessity of finding lasting peace.

Caen – Ducal Castle and AbbeysThe Abbaye aux Hommes and the Abbaye aux Dames were built by William the Conqueror and his wife Queen Mathilda. Visit the church of St Etienne, where William is buried and the Ducal Castle, one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe.

Omaha Beach, US Cemetery On the 6th June 1944 American troops landed on a 5 mile stretch of Normandy coastline in an assault codenamed: Omaha Beach. Today, the impressive memorial and US cemetery contain 9,387 white crosses, a commemorative wall to the 1,557 Americans who couldn’t be named and visitor’s centre.

Mont Saint-Michel Perched on a rocky islet in the midst of vast sandbanks lies Mont Saint-Michel, a Gothic-style Benedictine abbey dedicated to the archangel St Michael. Be amazed by the prodigious accomplishments of medieval architecture, by the forces of nature and the ever-changing light.

La Cité de la Mer – CherbourgThis unique complex includes ‘Le Redoutable’, the largest visitable submarine in the world, and ‘The Abyssal Aquarium, the deepest aquarium in Europe. New for 2012, the Titanic Exhibition celebrates the centenary of the Titanic’s voyage, which arrived at Cherbourg on the 10th April 1912.

Longues-sur-Mer Gun BatteryBuilt in the first few months of 1944, the naval battery at Longues was equipped with four 150-mm guns that could fire on both the Omaha and Gold beaches. Longues Battery is the only one in the region to have kept its guns, and because of its excellent state of preservation.

Juno Beach Centre Museum & ParkToday, Juno Beach is the site of an educational centre serving as a permanent reminder of the Canadians who lost their lives during WWII. The museum includes 7 exhibition rooms and a history programme for schools.

Memorial Pegasus MuseumThis museum tells the story of the battle orchestrated by England’s 6th Airborne Division. Groups can walk across the original bridge and discover why it was nicknamed Pegasus.

Maisy BatteryHidden for over 62 years – visit bunkers, touch German weapons and walk inside 2 miles of trenches. See and feel what it was like to live in a 20 man bunker with a 3 metre thick bomb-proof roof over it! Maisy Battery is one of the largest and best preserved defensive positions in the invasion area.

Falaise CastleIn 1028, Falaise Castle was the birthplace of William the Conqueror. Today, the castle’s exhibition features many anecdotes, stories and legends, bringing to life William’s story and the medieval history of Normandy.

HonfleurHonfleur is a maritime town of great historical interest. This beautiful historic port is linked with numerous painters, writers and musicians. Untouched by the passage of time, this small port has kept the landmarks of its rich past, making it today one of the most visited towns in France.

Local produce visitsDiscover the delights of les Sables d’Asnelles biscuit factory, practice language skills at a Boulangerie, observe the traditional techniques used by a French Chocolatier, watch the age old production methods at the Calvados and cider farms or tour a working goat’s cheese farm.

Day 3: Spend the day in Chamonix and visit the impressive Mer de Glace, an ever-moving body of ice that is located on the northern slopes of Mont Blanc. Take the cable car to reach the 3,842 metre peak of the Aiguille du Midi. The views of the Swiss, French and Italian Alps are stunning.

Day 4: The medieval town of Annecy is built around a 14th century Château. Canals run out of Lake Annecy, renowned for its water sports and crystal clear water. Return via the Gorges du Fier and walk the 252 metre suspended footbridge. The information centre explains the key events that helped shape this spectacular area of the Alps.

Day 5: Popular activities include guided Alpine walks, kayak and catamaran, high ropes course and mountain biking. The Palais des Sports in Mègeve offers a number of activities including an indoor swimming pool and ice skating. Activities are carefully selected and supervised.

The Pont du Gard is built in three soaring tiers over the Gardon valley and has an excellent visitor centre. Top excursions guaranteed to inspireDelville WoodsThe Battle of Delville Woods took place just outside of Longueval and was strategically critical to both sides. Groups can visit the original trenches and find out more at the battle museum.

Beaumont HamelThe parkland at Beaumont Hamel is one of the few remaining battlegrounds to be largely untouched since the end of WWI. Along with preserved trench lines there are a number of memorials and cemeteries contained within the 84 acres of parkland. Canadian guides offer pre-booked tours of the site and preserved trenches.

PozièresPozières had great strategic importance to both the allies and the Germans and was the scene of heavy fighting. Australian troops who had the task of capturing the village are commemorated by the Windmill Memorial.

Our most popular itineraryDay 1: Head off to the Battlefields of the Somme. En-route visit the Canadian Memorial at Vimy Ridge, where a huge monument pays tribute to those who fought in WWI. Guided visits of the tunnels can be pre-booked. Students can walk part of the trenches and there is an informative visitor centre. At Arras, groups can have a guided tour of the Wellington Quarry in the tunnels which played a key part in the Battle of Arras.

Day 2: Spend a day visiting the WWI Battlefields of the Somme. Include the imposing Thiepval Memorial to the 72,195 missing soldiers and the enormous Lochnager crater created by two charges of ammonal on the 1st July 1916, an explosion so powerful it could be heard in London. See the trenches at Beaumont Hamel, the Ulster Tower and Delville Wood. The 1916 Museum, located in an underground shelter in Albert, shows displays of life in the trenches and memorabilia from the Great War. For some fun time, spend the evening bowling.

Day 3: Visit the Historial de la Grande Guerre Museum in Péronne which provides an insight into life during the Great War and contains thousands of objects ranging from toys to weapons, paintings, drawings, posters, newspapers and documents. Time permitting, travel home stopping at Notre Dame de Lorette. The Battle for this 165m hill and chapel raged for twelve months and claimed many lives. There is a museum and the largest French WWI cemetery.

Essex Farm CemeteryOnce a WWI Advanced Dressing Station now the site of a Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery. Due to the proximity of the dressing station only 102 of the 1,199 graves are unidentified.

Hooge CraterAlthough filled in with water, the Hooge Crater is a thought-provoking site. The Museum recreates scenes of the war with life size models of horses and soldiers.

Hill 62 & Sanctuary WoodDuring 1916 the Canadians defended this higher ground to deny German soldiers a predatory view over Ypres. Today, the memorial and museum include reconstructed British trenches and rare WWI artefacts.

Our most popular itineraryDay 1: Head off to the Ypres Salient. Visit Poperinge and Talbot House. During WWI, thousands of British personnel were stationed in the town of Poperinge. Day 3: Explore the Tyne cot Military Cemetery and Visitor’s Centre, where rows of white gravestones mark the lives lost by the British Empire in WWI and form the largest commonwealth cemetery in the world. Contrast Tyne cot with the German Military cemetery at Langemark where 40,000 German soldiers are buried in mass graves. Arrive back in the UK with a much better understanding of the Great War.

Day 3 Moscow: Morning guided tour of the Moscow Metro System followed by a visit to the Cathedral of St Saviour. The Moscow metro system is an attraction in its own right. Each station was constructed by a different designer, using bronze, crystal and mosaic. Located on the bank of the Moskva River the Cathedral of St Saviour is the tallest Orthodox Church in the world. Depart Moscow for St Petersburg on an overnight sleeper train.

Day 4 St Petersburg: Have breakfast in St Petersburg and take to the streets for a guided tour including Nevsky Prospekt, Yeliseev’s and the Church of the Spilled Blood. Our top cross-curricular itineraryDay 1: Fly to Istanbul, check into your hotel and experience an evening visit to the grand central bazaar.

Day 2: Enjoy a guided tour of the wonderful sites of Istanbul. Visit the Blue Mosque, with its six graceful minarets and famed blue Iznik tiles. See the Hippodrome, an ancient Roman chariot racing arena, and the amazing Underground Cistern built in Byzantine times. Marvel at the remarkable treasury and state rooms of the Topkapi Palace, once the primary residence of the Ottoman Sultans. Admire the grandeur of Haghia Sophia, built as a church by the Emperor Justinian, it later became a mosque and is now a museum.

Day 3: Leave Istanbul and travel to Gallipoli, the site of many historic battles culminating in the 8 month campaign during WWI. Visit the battle and memorial site at Gallipoli peninsula before spending the night in Canakkale.

Day 4: Visit the site of Troy, the city referred to in Homer’s epic poem ‘The Iliad’. Troy is a place of legends, battles and warriors and now houses well-maintained archaeological sites and city museums. Continue to Pergamon, founded by Alexander the Great and considered a centre of ancient Greek culture. See the ruins of the Acropolis and the Asclepion, dedicated to the god of healing. Spend the next two nights in Kusadasi.

Day 5: Explore Ephesus, one of the most impressive ancient cities in Europe. Walk along the Arcadian Way and see the theatre where St Paul preached and the superb Celsus library. Little now remains of the Temple of Artemis which was one of the seven ancient wonders of the world. Include a visit to the Basilica of St John and the House of the Virgin Mary.

Day 6: Travel by coach through the picturesque countryside to the thermal springs of Pamukkale, known as cotton castle due to the white calcium deposits on the hillside. Stop at Aphrodisias to see the Temple of Aphrodite, the Agora, the Odeon, Baths and Theatre. Stay at a thermal spa hotel in Pamukkale.

Day 7: Fly home from Dalaman or Izmir airport.

The Best of the WestDay 1: UK – San Francisco.

Day 2: San Francisco - Sightseeing and Alcatraz: Enjoy a 3 hour guided city sightseeing tour, taking in Union Square, China Town, the Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman’s Wharf. Take a ferry ride and guided tour to Alcatraz Island, where many notorious criminals were incarcerated in the island’s former high security Federal Prison.

Day 3: Oakhurst – Yosemite: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Yosemite is recognised for its spectacular scenery which includes sheer granite cliffs, valleys carved by glaciers, giant sequoias, lakes, meadows and forests and three of the world’s highest waterfalls.

Day 4: Death Valley – Las Vegas: Next stop Nevada Desert, home to Death Valley, Joshua tree and the Mojave National preserve - the perfect place to find out more about life in the harsh desert climate. Arrive in Las Vegas for an unforgettable night in ‘the entertainment capital of the world’.

Day 5: Zion Canyons: The north fork of the Virgin River cuts through the Navajo sandstone of Zion National Park and in so doing creates the deep and narrow gorge of Zion Canyon. A variety of plants and wildlife inhabit the park’s four life zones: desert, riparian, woodland and coniferous forest.

Day 6: The Grand Canyon – Sedona - Kingman: The Colorado River has created one of the best known natural formations in the world, the truly spectacular Grand Canyon. Walk along the South Rim before continuing on to Sedona, Oak Creek Canyon.

Day 7: Kingman - Los Angeles: Take the scenic drive across Nevada and California, arriving in Los Angeles. Spend the afternoon and evening exploring this magical place, with memorable visits to Hollywood Boulevard, Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive.

Why travel to Morocco with Travelbound?Experience the real Morocco through visiting a local Berber family in the Atlas Mountains, riding a camel in the desert and spending a night in a Bedouin Tent. Discover Morocco’s distinctive landscapes, magical medinas and historic towns with ancient kasbahs and busy souks. Meandering around the famed Djemaa el-Fna market in Marrakesh with its fortune tellers, street musicians, faith healers and snake charmers, is an unforgettable experience. Tour co-ordinators top tips!We suggest you travel light as you will be on the move a lot in this active itinerary! Take a sarong or a wide scarf as a cover up and to protect you from the sun and sand of the desert. This is a Muslim country so dress respectfully. Although Arabic is the official language many people speak French. You will need to budget for tipping which is the norm in Morocco.

The Land of the BerbersDay 1 - UK - Marrakesh Depending on flight arrival time, wander around the city centre, taking in the main sights and the sprawling souks. Compare the modern western city with the traditional old walled Medina with its narrow winding streets and souks.

Day 2 - Ouarzazate Head for the Atlas Mountains and meet a local Berber family, where you’ll learn about their agriculture, animal husbandry and cooking methods. After lunch at the family’s home head out through green valleys with olive groves then over the Atlas range of mountains at the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass (2260m) into the barren slopes on the southern side of the pass.

Day 3 - Zagora From Ouarzazate travel through the lush Draa Valley – a strip of intense cultivation along a river formed from the melt waters of the Atlas Mountains. Arrive at Bougeorn to begin your camel safari (2 hours). Arrive at Tinfou dunes, set up camp and prepare traditional Moroccan fare under clear starry skies.

Day 4 - Marrakesh Return to Marrakesh, stopping en-route at Ait Benhaddou - probably the best-preserved fortified Kasbah in the country and a location for Hollywood films such as Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator. Possible visit to the Tamegroute library, an important religious learning centre.

Day 5 - Marrakesh - UK Dependent on flight times there may be time for last minute shopping and sightseeing before transferring back to the airport. Arrive back in the UK with memories that will last a lifetime.

Itinerary add-on options include adding an extra day/s in Marrakesh or an extra day in the desert. We can quote for a tour to include the Imperial Cities of Marrakesh, Rabat and Fez.

Our AccommodationWe use 3 star hotels, with students in 2 - 3 bedded rooms. Staff are accommodated in twins. All guestrooms are equipped with en-suite facilities and air-conditioning. Berber Camp consists of 2-4 man tents.
