agentreviewLynda McLaughlin from BCD Travel spent 14 nights at

Hard Rock Hotels’ Riviera Maya in Mexico with her family. Here’s what she thought…

First impressions ..................................10/10The private transfer from the airport had a playlist of fantasticrock music and from that point on we only encounteredexcellent service. The grounds and the beach are better thanthe pictures –stunning.

Comfort ....................................................9/10The rooms are an unusual diagonal shape which made it feelless like a hotel room and more like home. We had everythingwe needed including Rock Spa amenities, bath robes, slippersand a fully stocked mini bar with optics – plus a hammock onthe balcony. There was a daily maid service with everything re-stocked and a nightly turn down with little Hershey bars on thepillows for the kids. We had one superking size bed and onesingle, but I would recommend a family suite for families witholder children.

Quality ....................................................10/10When most hotels say ‘premium’ drinks they mean fairly wellknown brands. When Hard Rock says ‘premium’, we aretalking about the really expensive stuff! The food was alsoincredible.

Affordability ............................................8/10The hotel is more expensive than other five-star propertiesalong the peninsula. However I did my research properly andwas not drawn in by the false economy of seemingly ‘cheaper’options. When I calculated the cost of all the excursions Iwanted to do, the spa treatments I wanted to have, the beachcabana I would want to reserve – The Resort credits offered byHard Rock actually made the overall cost cheaper - even withthe 20% admin fee. For example, a dolphin swim for our familyof four worked out at £40 total, whereas the actual cost shouldhave been $250. In the end we spent less by booking HardRock and every penny we paid was more than worth it.

Service ..................................................10/10The staff all have this energetic enthusiasm that makes youfeel so welcome, even the maintenance staff who aren’tcustomer facing. The waiters and entertainment staff knewmy kids' names from day one andgreeted them as if they were friends.Nothing was too much trouble.

Overall scoring: .................... 9.510/

IT HAS been a summer that many Tour Operators willwant to forget. The news has been dominated by somany negative stories that one can almost forget the

catalogue of situations that have been in the headlines. The refugee crisis in Europe is currently in the newsevery day, whether it is the ‘swarms’ concentratingaround Calais that caused chaos down at the channelports or the boatloads of migrants arriving on the Greekholiday islands of Kos and Lesbos. Macedonia is nowaffected with huge numbers now converging at theborder crossings and an abandoned lorry in Austria had70 migrants on board who tragically lost their lives. Whatwith Tunisia, Turkey and Greece having been constantlyin the news as well, potential holidaymakers are probablyscratching their heads as to where they can have aholiday in a destination that has not been in the news. For those who have stayed at home, it has been mainly apoor summer weather-wise and for those living in thePreston area, it has not been safe to drink tap-water!Perhaps therefore we all ought to go into hibernation andwake up in 2016, pretending that 2015 has simply neverhappened!

I have been fascinated with the series of televisionprogrammes about Indian Railways, concentrating on lifeat Mumbai’s grand Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST)station. Having seen just a few of the millions of peoplewho use this station each year, never again shouldcommuters in this country complain about over-crowdedtrains! The most amazing thing to come out of theprogramme is that the whole network seems to workdespite the huge number of trains and passengers eachday and it is a testimony to the resilience of the Indianpeople themselves that despite what could be chaos, they make it work. Whenever I plan an itinerary forclients in India, I try to include at some stage a journeyby rail so that they get to experience the real India. Thereare of course some fabulous luxury trains operatingwithin India as well but at least one journey has to be a‘must do’ during any holiday.

Much of our time here in the office over the last fewweeks has been spent in finalising arrangements for ourconference to be held in Cadiz over the first weekend ofOctober. In addition to the never-ending challenge ofpersuading our members to invest in their businesses by

attending conferences so that they can return homemotivated with new ideas to develop their companies, wealso have to devise new programmes of relevant topics tobe discussed each year rather than churning out thesame old stuff. Yes: Simon Calder will be with us againbut he is very adept at looking at constantly changingdevelopments within the industry meaning that he has adifferent story each time. We have taken the bold step ofhaving two sessions with a guy who is able to readpeople’s minds: I just hope that he does not get meinvolved personally as it would be highly embarrassing tobe sitting up on stage for three hours whilst hedesperately tries to find any mind at all to read! “I amgetting nothing” could be his fatal response whilst theaudience sits there not at all surprised!

I was stunned to hear that many British people thinkthat bananas are produced in the UK and are not surewhere potatoes come from! Amazingly, 40% did not knowthat cauliflowers grow on the ground and they thoughtthat melons hang from trees. More than half did notknow what scampi is while one in five thought that ourold favourite – the pork pie is in fact a foreign dish! 2,000people apparently took part in this study and it just begsthe question: where do they find these people? Are thesethe same people who are asked how they are going tovote as I have never met anybody who has ever takenpart in these opinion polls? It is said that travel broadensthe mind in which case I would suggest that these peoplespend their whole lives travelling to dispel their theorythat spaghetti does actually grow on trees in Italy!

JAPAN IS EXPENSIVE!’ This is one of the most frequentcomments I hear when I visit tour operators and retailershops for Japan training. The British pound stands at astrong 186 yen now, making Japan great value for Britishtravellers. On the ground in Tokyo, a one day travel card is£8, a sushi lunch starts from £6 And a room at a modernbudget hotel in Tokyo is available from £46. Flight pricesfrom the UK to Japan have also dropped this year, with thecurrent best offer being £499 return with KLM.

Between January and July this year, 148,130 UK visitorstravelled to Japan - 19.5% more than in the same periodlast year. UK tour operators and cruise companies havereported to us that Japan products have become verypopular and sales are going so well, especially for autumnand spring 2016 departures, where travellers can marvel atthe gorgeous autumn colours and picturesque cherryblossoms. However, these two periods are not must-visittimes; the annual average temperature of Tokyo is 19.6c,while London is 13.8c. Our mild climate in April, May, fromlate September and early November allows you to exploreJapan more comfortably.

ITINERARY IDEASTHE MOST popular Japan itinerary is Tokyo, Hakone, anational park with a spectacular Mount Fuji view, andKyoto.

Tokyo has two international airports - Narita andHaneda. Narita is located 42-miles from Tokyo station andrequires an 80-minute bus journey, whereas Haneda islocated a closer 13-miles away, just 45 minutes by train.

Tokyo is the capital city, Japan’s financial or economiccentre and has a unique culture. There are a number ofattractions in Tokyo that should not be missed. Theseinclude the Ginza, Shinjuku, Asakusa, Shibuya andAkihabara areas, not forgetting Tsukiji, an open-airwholesale fish and food market.

Kyoto, one of Japan’s ancient capitals, retains its uniquetraditional culture and atmosphere and is easy to travelaround with a £6 one-day pass for the underground andbuses. A total of 17 historic sites, including the Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Nijo Castle, are preserved as WorldCultural Heritage Sites. You might spot the 'maiko’ girls

(apprentice geisha) who walk around wearing colourfulkimonos in the Gion district. Why not try kaiseki ryori ? Thisis Japan's haute cuisine: simple but immaculately preparedand presented to reflect the changing seasons.

A WINTER BREAKA SEVEN-DAY JR Pass (£153) allows you to travel all overJapan by JR trains including the bullet train, so it is so easyto go beyond Tokyo and Kyoto. Back in March this year, thenew JR Hokuriku bullet train line opened connectingTokyo-Nagano-Kanazawa in just two-and-a-half hours, soit is now easier to explore the north-western part of Japan. After spending a couple of nights in Tokyo, take a bullettrain to Nagano, followed by a 90-minute local train journeyto rural Yudanaka for the Jigokudani Monkey Park, whereyou can watch the delightful Japanese monkeys bathing inthe hot springs. Spend a night at a Japanese style inncalled a ryokan, then continue travelling to Kanazawa andvisit Kenroku-en garden, which is considered to be one ofJapan’s most beautiful gardens. Kanazawa is also famousfor its delicious seafood and crabs are particularly tasty inwinter time! This north-western part of Japan has great skiresorts for perfect powder ski and the number of keenskiers and snowboarders is increasing rapidly.

ESCORTED TOURS A GREAT number of Japan tours are available from the UKmajor operators and Japan-specialised travel companies. There are tailor-made itineraries for schools, families andhoneymooners, and themed tours for experiencinggardens, birdwatching and diving, which are easilyarranged. HOT TIPS FOR A HOT CONTINENTby KATHRYN COLES, UK and Ireland sales manager, Tauck

Why South America? It’s not every holiday destination that lives up to the claim‘there’s something for everyone’, but South America does:extraordinary landscapes, dramatic Andean mountains, vastdeserts, iconic rivers, cloud forests and fabulous beaches;fascinating ancient cultures; world- famous heritage sitesand amazing wildlife. It’s a continent both grand anddiverse.

Who’s going? On my trip to Peru this year it was delightful to seegrandparents taking their grandchildren to see somethingextraordinary together, as well as families opting for morethan the standard beach holiday. South America is changingrapidly - for the better. Many of the larger cities havebecome more tourist-friendly and safer, with English morewidely spoken, and the architectural sites are, increasingly, better preserved. There’s also been a football effect, withthe 2014 World Cup in Brazil boosting European interest.

When to go?As a general rule the European winter is the best time tovisit, although much of the continent can be enjoyed at anytime of the year. June to August is the high season in Peru,Argentina and Chile. The shoulder seasons, April to Mayand September to October, are good times to visit, withfewer crowds. December through to March is an excellenttime to visit Patagonia – and of course there’s summertimein Brazil (November to April), with the world-renownedcarnival in February. From next year British Airways isoffering direct flights to Costa Rica and Peru, making iteven easier for your clients to travel to these destinations.

Where to go?Having decided on the continent, now comes the difficultpart. Which of the 13 countries to visit? South America is anideal location to visit on an organised tour. This way you canget a snapshot of the continent, as well as taking a closerlook at some of the highlights. For example, a tour thatincludes Chile, Argentina and Brazil, will give a good insightinto the culture, landscapes and people, as will tours ofPeru or Costa Rica. If you’ve covered all the above, the nexttrips should include Antarctica, Patagonia or Galapagos. Finally, it is important to ask your clients the right questionsand tease out exactly what they are looking for. There are somany ways to see South America and it’s too vast toconquer in one trip.

I’m a bit of a hoarder. Well, more than a bit to be honest. This isn’t usually a problem, but at the moment I’mputting things into storage in preparation for moving.I didn’t realise that I had so much stuff. I definitely

wouldn’t make a good Buddhist; I get far too attached tothings. One of the boxes I moved out of the attic contained my old

school books, and on top of those was a toy Native Americanheadband. No feather, just the headband - which I got fromLEGOLAND, Denmark, more than 30 years ago.I remember that it was very cold and there was a bit of a

breeze. Walking from the car park to the theme park wepassed some camels. One was very unhappy aboutsomething and was having a good old spit. He was obviouslyvery gifted at this as he managed to get a spit-bubble to floatoff in the wind.Unfortunately, I was too old for most of the attractions. I

really wanted to get a LEGOLAND driving licence, but I wastwo years too old to take part. So I had to watch my sisterand her friend have a go. The Traffic School is still running -it has been an activity since the park opened in 1968 andmillions of children have been awarded a driving licence.Just not me, unfortunately.I got the headband when panning for gold. I think that the

‘gold’ was bits of Lego and according to the website I wouldhave had my gold ‘melted down’ to make a gold coin. I don’tseem to have my coin anymore, just the head band. So I’llhave borrow a niece or nephew to go back and get anotherone. As well as keeping the activities I remember, LEGOLAND

is always updating. This year’s feature attraction is a StarWars X-wing Starfighter. With a wing span of 13-metres anda height of three metres, it is the world’s biggest Legomodel, built from more than 5.3 million LEGO bricks. The original LEGOLAND is in Billund, mainland Denmark.

visit to Dreamland Margate

IT'S BEEN a little over two months since therelaunch of Dreamland, a vintage inspiredamusement park in Margate designed byWayne Hemingway. The 11-year campaign to bring back to life

one of Britain's most iconic seaside institutionshas been supported by The Dreamland Trustand Thanet District Council with a fundingpackage of £18million, with the overall aim ofcreating a unique vintage amusement park. With Phase one now complete (offering 17

restored rides and attractions, as well as a rollerdisco, pleasure gardens, restaurants, foodcourts, sides shows and arcades), phases two tofour of the park's new future will follow in 2015-2017. The Scenic Railway – the UK’s oldest roller

coaster – will reopen later this year and thepark will continue to evolve over the followingthree years with the final phase scheduled tobegin in 2017. One of the park's many interesting attributes

is that more than 200 objects have beenrestored and reimaged from its former gloryyears in the 1980s; something that is evident asyou walk around the park, taking in informationon billboards and signs that highlight thehistory behind each ride and attraction.

Eddie Kemsley, CEO of Dreamland, said: "The successful launch ofphase one is a testament of allthose involved in thisproject and thosecampaigners thatsavedDreamlandfor the

nation. Throughtheir hard work and the financial support wehave received we have transformed a oncederelict site back into the beating heart ofMargate. Without their hard work none of thiswould have been possible. There is still much todo and we look forward to welcoming our firstvisitors and look forward to the park continuingto develop.”The 16-acre amusement park is home to

three listed structures and a collection ofheritage assets. Many of the rides are the lastremaining examples of their kind in the world, from the 1950s Hurricane Jets, the originalDreamland Gallopers, the Double Deckers andthe much loved Caterpillar; 1870s Grade II-listed menagerie cages - the last of their kind inthe world, classic side shows, destination diningand evocative spaces drawing on Dreamland'slegacy throughout the decades. The park has recently introduced an annual

membership scheme, designed to benefit bothfrequent visitors and locals. Kemsley said: "Membership will give our

guests the opportunity to visit the parkfrequently whilst ensuring exceptional value formoney. Members will the first to learn aboutnew rides, attractions and events, as well asbeing invited to previews and member-onlyevents; all part of being our exclusive club."Meanwhile, the attraction has lined up a

selection of special events, one of which is 'Bythe Sea', which takes place on November 14and offers a musical day out for visitors, with FOALS named as the headlineset. For more information seewww.dreamland.co.uk

THEME’S LIKE A GOOD IDEA…There are theme parks, andthen there’s Europa-Park in southern Germany, whichstands out as the epitome of how the genre should be done, and run, writes Paul Scudamore. It is long-established, stillfamily-owned and run, and feels like it. The concept, thestaff, the whole resort with its five themed hotels (includingthe very stylish four-star New England-style Hotel BellRock) and more roller-coasters than anywhere else inEurope, plus in excess of 50 eating outlets comprising snackbars and restaurants, make this destination somewhere thatindividuals, couples and families or groups will thank travelagents for recommending. Unlike some theme parks, thereis no arrival checking for food and drink in the bags ofvisitors. Indeed, the park – as it is run by a family –understands the needs of families, so it embraces the bring-your-own philosophy and consequently there are picnicareas throughout the vast site which has areas themed on13 countries including, obviously, Germany, plus England,France, Austria, Switzerland, Greece, Russia and Spain etc. There are also several event, shows and entertainmentlocations across the sprawling site, as well as a Children’sWorld, Grimm’s Enchanted Forest, Adventure Land andMinimoys Kingdom, as well as acre upon acre of manicuredlandscaped gardens and grounds, a natural river flowingthrough the park, and shops galore. This year the resortmarks its 40th birthday and remains open from 09.00-18.00daily until November 8. Getting there is easy with flights, forinstance, from Stansted to nearby Baden-Baden withRyanair, and it is featured by several UK operators. Detailsat www.europapark.de
