Trips & Opportunities Descriptions

4-H programs have highlighted the significance of “learning by doing” throughout the years. High

quality positive youth development programs in 4-H are research-driven, developed, and supported by the University of Wisconsin – Extension. These “hands-on” programs are offered on the local level here in Dunn County, but also expand the educational opportunities to young people to explore the United States. Learn more about a few of the potential trips and opportunities below.

American Spirit - East: This trip is a leadership program that fosters exploration and discovery in 4-H youth

by experiencing the American history first hand. It is a week-long trip where members travel to featured sites like The Amish Village, Valley Forge, Philadelphia’s Independence Hall and Liberty Bell, New York’s Harbor Tour and 9/11 Memorial, including a Night Tour of the big City of New York. They will also explore other historical places such as Mayflower II/Plymouth Rock, Boston/Freedom Train, Chinatown, and Niagara Falls. There will be opportunities to see the Atlantic Ocean and go whale watching. Students will record their experience, thoughts, and opinions throughout their journey via a Blog with family and friends, detailing their eye-witness account of America’s East. Along the way, members are required to teach a lesson on American History to their fellow 4-Hers which fosters communication skills and self-confidence.

American Spirit - West: This ten-day trip, where members will travel through America’s historical and

infamous Wild West. This program partners with the National Park Service featuring several national parks stops along the way, like St. Croix Falls National Scenic Riverway, Badlands National Park, Mt. Rushmore National Memorial, Jewel Cave National Monument, Yellowstone National Park, Grant Teton National Park, and Devils Tower National Monument. The activities vary from ranger-led education programs to service learning projects, and of course includes all the fun camping and hiking to boot. Similar to the American Spirit East, participants in this program will also document their hands on experience of America’s West via online media.

Citizenship Washington Focus: This is a week-long trip where members are able to learn about our

nation’s historical context and current political procedures by being actively involved in processes. It takes place at the National 4-H Conference Center, which is only a mile away from the Washington, DC Border. Members will have the opportunity to explore destinations such as The Capitol, Mount Vernon, Arlington National Cemetery, the Smithsonian museum, Presidential and war monuments/memorials. Each summer, thousands of 4-H members from across the country participate in this historically grounded excursion and have said they enjoyed the motivational speakers, educational workshops, and behind-the-scenes look at our nation’s capital. Participants pick a week out of 4-5 possibilities to travel.

U.S. Space Camp: The 4-H Missions in Space program, known as Space Camp, is a fun-filled weekend for

middle school youth at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center where participants complete a simulated Space Shuttle mission, experience training simulators, tour the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, and learn about becoming an astronaut. Space Camp trainees also climb the tallest mountain on the red planet with the Mars Climbing Wall and experience four times the gravity of Earth with the liftoff force of the Space Shot™ simulator. They get an astronaut’s view of Earth while watching amazing films in the IMAX® Spacedome Theater and Digital Theater.

State Youth Conference: Approximately 600 youth attend this educational event in Madison each

summer. Participants take part in educational seminars, workshops, and assemblies where they will meet people from across Wisconsin. All while having the opportunity to experience the college atmosphere at the University of Wisconsin – Madison by eating on campus to staying in the residence halls. Enjoy social events including movies, volleyball, table games, music, and theater performances. Delegates can also tour Madison area attractions including the State Capitol Building, UW-Madison Campus, Camp Randall Stadium, the Kohl Center, and local companies in the Madison area.

National 4-H Congress: National 4-H Congress is the flagship event of the 4-H program. The Congress

provides youth, ages 14-19, (delegates cannot be older than 18 on January 1, 2009) a quality, educational and cross-cultural experience that exceeds what any state independently provides. The schedule includes workshops designed to develop leadership skills, plenary Sessions with outstanding speakers and entertainers, a Service Learning Experience during which you will participate in hands-on service projects, as well as, tours and recreational opportunities throughout the Atlanta. The program is built upon the Cooperative Extension System’s belief that young people can be significant partners in addressing the issues that face our nation, especially those affecting youth. Each year a National Design Team of Extension educators, 4-H youth, and 4-H adult volunteers analyze current youth issues and determine the most effective ways to address them. The Congress program will also provide opportunities for members to explore a variety of Atlanta resources, including Carter Presidential Library, Martin Luther King Center for Non-Violent Change, Centennial Olympic Park, World of Coca-Cola, The Atlanta Zoo, CNN Center, Atlanta History Center, and the Georgia Aquarium.

STEM Camp: This camp is meant to increase the knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math

through fun interactive learning opportunities. Great camp for members that enjoy science, members that are fascinated by discovering how things work, and members that love to build things. In this camp, members will get hands on experience on two different kinds of robotics, science in agriculture, and so much more! Registration fee includes lunch, T-shirt, and Supplies.

4-H Camp Counselor: Working as a camp counselor can be a genuinely rewarding experience! Plus, it can

be a great resume builder. This is an excellent leadership opportunity for older youth who like to work with younger youth! Come and learn more about younger 4-H members as you lead them in various camp activities. Counselors stay in cabin with campers and are integral in planning the activities for participants. Those selected to be counselors must participate in counselor training camp and planning in the spring and early summer.

Winter Camp: This camp is designed especially for young adults to build leadership skills and practice

teamwork. Camp at Beaver Creek Reserve and experience “more than 400 acres of diverse habitat including upland woods, river bottom forests, wetlands, savannah areas, and a multitude of flora and fauna” in the beautiful winter season. Potential activities include learning about different native animals, Animal Tracking, Cross Country Skiing, Geocaching, Nature Hikes, and Snowshoeing.

4-H Member Experience

What better way to get the inside scoop of a 4-H trip or camp than by Learning what other Dunn County 4-H members have

to say about their experiences! Check out what other 4-Hers have said below. U.S. Space Camp Our Space Camp adventure would begin by being divided into teams and given a Space Camp Crew Trainer to guide us through the program. The next three days would include: rocket construction, IMAX movies, astronaut simulators, challenging experiments, and space missions. Along with the crew trainers teaching us all about the past, present and future of space exploration. Ethan’s favorite part of Space Camp was the actual space mission. Ethan was part of Team Conrad and he was the Mission Specialist #2. “I got to dress up in the space suit and go outside the shuttle and fix the wing so we could orbit back to Earth” said Ethan. Ethan’s Team Conrad scored a 49 out of 50 total points and did an excellent job working together. Emma’s favorite part of Space Camp was the Space Quiz Bowl. Emma was part of Team Collins and her team got 2nd place out of 14 total teams. “I also liked the MAT simulator, it was fun!” said Emma. With this simulator you get strapped into a chair and there are three rings that spin in different directions. This is to simulate the space shuttles re-entry in the Earth’s atmosphere. Olivia had many favorite parts of camp but she especially enjoyed the rocket construction. “We got to construct our own rocket and launch them. My rocket blasted really high into the air!” said Olivia. Olivia was part of

Team Cernan and created many great friendships with her team members. Olivia will never forget the five days that she spent at Space Camp and is so glad she took advantage of this 4-H opportunity.

Space Camp was awesome!! Not only did we learn about space but we made 4-H friendships that will last a lifetime. All three of us agree in a couple years we would like to go back and be camp counselors. We highly recommend Space Camp to all 4-H members in the 6th-8th grade and we are willing to share our experience with those who are interested in this great 4-H opportunity.

Olivia, Emma, and Ethan of the Missouri Valley 4-H

“We were all nervous at first, but then we

started to get to know 4-Her’s from other counties and it was

blast!” - Olivia.

American Spirit – West “The American Spirit West Trip is 11 days long. Throughout those 11 days, delegates travel and tour South Dakota and Wyoming. The trip is focused mainly on the National Parks. Delegates get to explore over ten State and National Parks, through ranger led programs, hiking (for all abilities), and camping (in the St. Croix and Yellowstone National Parks). We also assisted the National Park Service in a service project cleaning up buckthorn along the National Ice Age Scenic Trail. It is a lot of fun and interesting to explore and to help preserve the natural beauty of our country.”

4-H Member Experience Continued

“Earlier this summer I attended the 4-H Citizen Washington Focus trip. I went to Washington, D.C. for a week and was able to tour many of the monuments and memorials that our country has set up to honor those who have given their life fighting for our great country. We also toured many of the memorials for some of our Presidents that have done many great things for this country. A couple of them were: the Lincoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, and the FDR Memorial. We also got to go visit Arlington Cemetery, which is the United States National Cemetery. We visited the graves of JFK and his wife Jackie, where the eternal flame shines brightly between their graves. I stayed at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland. There were delegates from about 15 other states staying there as well. Throughout the week we did different workshops dealing with different things that our government officials have to take care of. We also got to go to the Capital Building and meet the Wisconsin Senators. One night we attended a dinner theater to watch the performance “Hairspray”. This was definitely one of my favorite things I have done while in 4-H, and I encourage you to go on this trip. This picture is me at the WWII memorial, where there is a pillar for each of the states as a thank you for their help in the war.” - Kelly Quilling of Elk Meadow

If you have experienced a 4-H Trip, Camp, or Conference please send us in a description of your experience. It will help other 4-hers get an inside look of what the opportunity

entails. If you want to send in photos, we’d love those too!

Fundraising Ideas

Hopefully you are interested in going on trips, attending camps, and thinking about taking exciting opportunities within the world of 4-H! If you are, you may be thinking about how you will be able to afford these opportunities. In this case we have come up with some ideas for fund raising that you could try. These may work on individual or club levels. See if your club is interested in collaborative fundraising. Several of these ideas could be implemented at the same time. Be creative! Please Note: Make sure you speak with your parents or guardians about these fundraising ideas and get their permission before engaging in any of these fundraising ideas. First figure out how much you need. Calculate how much you have personally saved, how much your parents/guardians/family are planning on providing, and how much the Dunn County Leaders Council will provide, if any. Then begin to plan your fundraising strategies.

Put on a Sale - Below are a few ideas for fundraising through sales.

Garage Sale – The old saying, “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure” is still true to this day. With your parent’s help/permission gather items around the house to sell at a garage sale. See if other family members or friends have items that they would like to donate to you and sell it for 100% profit. If you cannot find enough items to put on your own personal garage sale, see if other neighbors, friends, or family would like to collaborate. Tip: Sell water and soda if it is a hot day or coffee and hot cocoa is its chilly. Check with your local grocery store to see if they will donate the drinks! Bake Sale: An oldie but a goodie. You could do all sorts of things with a bake sale. This would be a good one to look into places or events that might let you sell your goodies. Think community events, 4-H events, School events, or wherever you think would work best. Tips: look up bake sale ideas online for cheap but appealing package methods and easy recipes. Lemonade Stand: Another oldie but a goodie. This one has so many possibilities. You can sell all sorts of beverages from water, soda/pop, lemonade, and depending on the weather, coffee, hot cocoa, or tea. Again you can ask your local grocery stores to see if they will donate any products. The location of this one is seemingly endless. You could set one up at your garage sell, at any local events (with permission of course), or simply outside your family’s home. Think about proposing a shared “lemonade stand” with you club; it could be a fun project with your club to build an appealing looking stand and then it can be shared with everyone. Tip: you can also combine other fundraising strategies with this like the Lollipop Fundraiser or Bake Sale. Calendar Sale: Another strategy that has a larger up front cost and requires a bit more planning. This is a great fundraising strategy for a club. Your club could compile all of your favorite 4-H photos or drawings and put them into a calendar using one of the many design websites online. Some online calendar creating software also allows you to mark special dates in the calendar where you could list all the fun upcoming 4-H events for the next year. This is an item that you can sell at all of the events you plan on going to or plan on hosting.

Services / Collections – Below are a few ideas for fundraising through services and/or collections.

Pet Sitting/Dog Walking: This is a great individual fundraiser. You can make posters and hang them up around town advertising your services. Make sure to speak to your parents about the logistics. Set your price at a reasonable level and have fun making money while hanging out with fury friends. Seasonal Chore-a-thon: Start thinking of potential seasonal services you could provide family, friends, and neighbors. Think grass mowing, Leaf raking, Christmas Light placement/removal, and/or dock installment/removal. You could incorporate your club or a few other 4-H members, charging either a flat fee or asking for fair donations. Remember the importance of safety! Ask your parents about the logistics of your seasonal chore-a-thon and be sure to have at least two people working on tasks such as removing Christmas lights, where one person can hold the ladder and the other carefully take them down.

Activities / Events – Below are a few ideas for fundraising through Activities and/or Events.

Treasure Chest: A club strategy at an event. Find a chest with a lock and key. Fill it up with donated prizes! Buy at least 2 dozen more keys that look similar and sell keys to open the chest. The person that buys the one that opens the chest gets the contents. Have the key sale go on for a couple hours at an event before people get to try their key. Add a note to the end of each key thanking them for supporting your 4-H club. Tip: Keep the chest and key so you can do this fundraiser multiple times. Dart Board Challenge: You’ll need access to a dart board and multiple darts. Contestants pay $1.00 for each dart to play in a Dart Board Challenge. This is another great club strategy at an event. Participants try to hit the bullseye to win donated prizes or to be entered into a raffle to win one big prize. Contact local businesses for possible donations. Tip: you can play around with the rules to make it more entertaining, for example, instead of asking participants to hit the bullseye you can randomly place a four leaf clover on the dart board and ask them to hit that. Be creative and have fun!

New Age – Below are a few ideas for fundraising through “new age” formats.

GoFund Me or Related Website: This is a ‘new age’ way to build up some fundraising money. All you have to do is a set up a page and create a narrative on why you are looking for fundraising. Then ‘share’ you story through social media outlets. Ask friends and family to ‘share’ it too. This could be a great opportunity for your club to share their story as a whole and you would be casting a wider web. Tie it all Together: Several of these ideas you could do all at once. Speak with your club to see if they are interested in putting on a full blown fundraising event in your community.
