SAFETY COMMITTEEAdvanced Disposal - Atlanta North’s Safety Committee was founded by General Manager Brian Chesson, with members of each department, to promote a safety culture in the workplace. Each member is to serve for six months on the committee, which meets once a week to discuss safety topics that are presented from any employee. The committee is planning contests over time to engage and promote the best safety practices. Its first initiative, “Safety for Santa” is to remind staff members that their goal is to be home for the holidays – to emphasize the importance of safety, not only at work but also in all aspects of their lives. “Safety is not only about protecting yourself, but knowledge to empower awareness and forethought of best safety practices.”

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

GLOVES OFF CANCER Trey Bell, Regional Routing Specialist out of Muskego, Wisconsin, has started the program “Gloves Off Cancer” to aid those within his and other communities who are struggling with cancer. Trey graduated from Wisconsin, Whitewater as the first player in WIAC to play in a major Division I All-Star game. Before the NFL draft, where he was expected to be chosen fourth round, he suffered from

two torn Achilles tendons. He was still able to play for the Buffalo Bills before choosing the path of arena football. He spent years playing for the Chicago Rush and Grand Rapids Rampage before he went back to school and graduated in 2010 with a major in human health performance.

In 2014, Trey was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. “I don’t think the community understands what cancer means to an individual. There is a huge possibility of death with this disease, not to mention the mental and physical stress that is placed not only on them, but their family.” Trey created the “Gloves Off Cancer” program to build a sense of community around these families through fund-raising and offering a safe space for individuals to communicate with others going through similar experiences. “Your family doesn’t always understand what you are going through, though they try. It is helpful to talk with others who are facing the same issues. The last thing family members of those battling cancer want to do is ask for help, though they have medical bills upward of $20,000 depending on treatment severity and insurance. This program provides financial backing for families within the community,” said Trey.

Through events and online sales, Trey’s program is just taking off. This fall, Trey, along with the help of his community, raised over $6,000 at the Wisconsin Whitewater closing game. “Attendance was up 50-60 percent of what a closing game would normally have. I am appreciative of the

bands, radios and local businesses for their involvement.” The university contacted several former players to attend. Trey, the players, along with General Manager Jim Leszczynski, who was a lead organizer, went around the tailgate selling t-shirts and taking donations. When asked if there was anything else he wanted to include, Trey said, “I want to thank the drivers from Advanced Disposal - Madison, Wisconsin, who have donated a substantial amount to this cause

and I am filled with gratitude.” Advanced Disposal is proud to support Trey and “Gloves Off Cancer”. If you would like to purchase a t-shirt to support the cause, please visit http://eliteapparelwi.com/new-products-3/.

RETIRED WITH HONOR

Thank you to the Advanced Disposal locations that participated in the inaugural year of our Flag Retirement Program designed to retire and recycle old or worn flags that are no longer in use. A handful of collected flags were properly retired as stipulated by the U.S. Flag Code in a special Veterans Day ceremony at Magnolia Cemetery in Orange Park, Florida. The remaining flags, over 2,500, were shipped to our partner, American Flag Recycling in Butler, Wisconsin. Because of the overwhelming success of our inaugural year, we anticipate continuing this program for years to come.

MORE KUDOS“A note of appreciation for outstanding service. On Thursday, October 22, 2015, your

collector of recycle material at our condominium took the extra few seconds to provide that little extra service that makes people feel good. Generally the collector, after dumping the contents into his truck, simply slides the empty basket across the driveway toward the garage door, which is just fine with us. However, on Thursday, the resident of our unit 506, a somewhat elderly lady, happened to be standing outside her garage when her service was performed. In this case, he did not simply slide the empty basket across the driveway but walked up to the garage door and handed the empty basket to this lady. I observed the above and would ask that you pass on our appreciation of this ‘over and above’ level of service to your employee.”

– Robert Burgardt, Hartford, Wisconsin

KUDOS FROM THE FIELD

“In a time when too many people are in a hurry, impolite and seemingly uncaring, a young man who works for you stands out in a good way. His name is Justin. We met a couple months ago when he was picking up at my neighbor’s, and I had come to take her trash and recycle bins in for her. When I walked down the street toward the next neighbor’s home, he thought I wanted to say something else and walked back toward me. I told him I had just come to take the trash and recycling bins up to their garage for them, as they are in their 90s. The next week, Justin took their trash and recycle bins up to their garage and has continued to do so ever since. It would seem to me he is on a timed schedule as he is always hurrying whether I see him from outside or through a window. For him to take the extra time to place their bins by their garage, I believe is very commendable. I believe Justin is doing an excellent job by going further than what is required of him. So, thank you, and thanks again to Justin for doing such a great job and being a fine young man.”

– William Mueller, Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin

“I'm always really bad about moving my can to the end of the driveway, but whenever I forget, the garbage man goes the extra mile to retrieve the container anyway. Thank you for the extra effort.”

“There is a lot to say about these guys that work every day whether it's hot or cold, rainy or sunny - it's not an easy job to do on a daily basis. I just want to say THANK YOU! Y'all are doing a great job, so keep up the good work. I'm sure everyone else feels the same way. Once again, thank you!”

“Many thanks for ALWAYS doing such a great job. I know the job is probably a thankless one, but we hope you all know we appreciate everything you do to make our lives cleaner!”

FACILITY SPOTLIGHT

ADVANCED DISPOSAL OPENS NINTH COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS STATION IN BATAVIA, ILLINOIS

In November, Advanced Disposal - Batavia, Illinois, successfully opened the company’s ninth Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fueling station.

The Batavia CNG station cost approximately $2 million to build. Fourteen of the company’s trucks fill up at the station every night and keep the greater Batavia community cleaner and greener every day. This number will increase as we replace retiring diesel trucks once their useful life has expired. A CNG truck costs between $30,000 and $40,000 more than a comparable diesel truck. About 25 percent of our collection routes in the Batavia area run on CNG, and customers will notice the logo on the trucks reads “powered by CNG.”

CNG is an alternative fuel used for internal combustion engines. It generates low hydrocarbon emissions and is considered a clean energy. While the U.S. imports more than 47 percent of the oil it uses, 98 percent of the natural gas used in the U.S. is produced in North America. In the U.S. alone, Natural Gas Vehicles offset

the use of about 400 million gallons of gasoline in 2013, and that number is only increasing, according to the Natural Gas Vehicles for America.

Advanced Disposal is proud to be a part of this natural gas movement.

STONE’S THROW LANDFILL NAMED LANDFILL OF THE YEARAdvanced Disposal’s Stone’s Throw Landfill in Tallassee, Alabama, was presented with the Landfill of the Year Award by Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) this November at the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) conference at Lake Guntersville State Park.

This is the fourth year ADEM has presented the Landfill of the Year Award. Nominations are accepted from inspectors and permit engineers as well as an internal compliance team. A landfill must be in compliance to earn a nomination and is then judged on community involvement, sponsorships, innovation, appearance and general aesthetics. Advanced Disposal’s Star Ridge Landfill in Moody, Alabama, is also a recipient of this award. Congratulations to General Manager Herman Kitchens and his team of environmental professionals for making their landfill one of the best in the industry.

Stone’s Throw Landfill is collocated with an Advanced Disposal collection company at 1303 Washington Boulevard in Tallassee, Alabama. The landfill produces and sells carbon offset credits on the Climate Action Reserve (CAR) carbon exchange. The credits are for sale on this exchange to companies

that voluntarily choose to offset their own carbon footprint by purchasing carbon credits. Stone’s Throw Landfill is able to produce these credits because Advanced Disposal installed and operated a landfill gas collection system years in advance of it being required by current regulations and by its air permit.

The landfill was once closed by a former owner and then reopened by Advanced Disposal in spring of 2002. It currently accepts an average of 1,050 tons per day. At current tonnage, the landfill has capacity until 2053. It has an exceptional environmental record and has current disposal contracts with Tallapoosa, Montgomery, Elmore and Macon Counties and the Cities of Notasulga, Alexander City, Tallassee and accepts waste from Advanced Disposal subsidiaries and multiple third party haulers.

• Orange Felt• Red (or any color) Felt cut

into 1-inch wide strips• Black Puffy Paint• ½ Cup Rice per Snowman• Rubber Bands

SUPPLIES:

• If you end up with larger socks, trim them down so the stretchy part is separate (this will be used for the snowman’s hat).

• Pour ½ cup of rice into the bottom of the sock.• Fill the sock about ¾ full of polyester fiberfill (or until you have

the desired size snowman). Securely tie off the top of the sock with a rubber band. Use a second rubber band to create the head of the snowman.

• Tie the red strip of felt around the middle rubber band to form a scarf for your snowman.

• Glue buttons down the side of the snowman.• Cut a triangle out of orange felt for the nose, and use the googly

eyes to make the snowman’s face.

INSTRUCTIONS:

KIDS’ CORNER: Sock SnowmenA great way to recycle socks that have lost their matches!

Source: www.mamaslikeme.com

• If you used a smaller sock, you can just fold the top of the sock over the rubber band to form the hat and glue a pom ball to the top. If you used a larger sock, you need to secure one end of the cut portion with a rubber band and then fold over the remaining side to form a separate hat. Glue a pom ball to the top of the hat.

• Put the hat on top of your snowman, and use the puffy paint to create a smile.
