More than 11,000 transportation professionals, scholars, and administrators convened from across the globe, setting an attendance record for the meeting. T ransportation’s role as an instrument for innova-tion and economic growth was the focus of the

Transportation Research Board’s 91st Annual Meeting,January 22–26, 2012, in Washington, D.C. More than11,000 transportation professionals, scholars, andadministrators convened from across the globe, settingan attendance record for the meeting. Approximately4,000 presentations and 650 workshops and ses-sions—along with committee meetings, special events,and awards presentations—gave attendees opportu-nities to network and to share research findings. Morethan 80 sessions and workshops addressed the meet-ing’s theme, “Transportation: Putting Innovation andPeople to Work.”

In 2012, attendees could browse the Annual Meet-ing Final Program using an e-reader or tablet as wellas the online interactive version and hard copy; a dailye-newsletter allowed participants to access meetingnews, photos, and updates on the go. Sandra Rosenbloom, Professor of Planning, Uni-versity of Arizona, is the 2012 Chair of the TRB

Executive Committee. Deborah H. Butler, ExecutiveVice President, Planning, and Chief Information Offi-cer, Norfolk Southern Corporation, is the 2012 ViceChair.

An active participant in TRB committees, Rosen-bloom currently is on leave from the University ofArizona to direct an infrastructure initiative at theUrban Institute in Washington, D.C. Before becom-ing Professor of Planning, she was Director of theUniversity’s Roy P. Drachman Institute for Land andRegional Development Studies. She is an interna-tionally recognized expert in transportation planningand societal trends in transportation and communitydevelopment. Rosenbloom is the 2004 recipient ofTRB’s Roy W. Crum Award and the TRB InternationalSecretary. From 1998 to 2000, she was a member ofthe Leadership Council of the Urban Land Institute.Rosenbloom received a master’s degree in publicadministration and a Ph.D. in political science fromthe University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Butler joined Norfolk Southern in 1978; mostrecently, she was Vice President of Customer Service.She received a bachelor’s degree from Agnes ScottCollege and completed executive education programsat Northwestern University’s Transportation Center,the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University, andthe Harvard Business School. A trustee of VirginiaWesleyan College, Butler also serves on the Board ofDirectors of TTX Company, as a Commissioner onthe Norfolk Airport Authority, and as past Chair ofthe National Grain Car Council.

Newly appointed to the Executive Committee areChris T. Hendrickson, Duquesne Light CompanyProfessor of Engineering and Codirector of the GreenDesign Institute, Carnegie Mellon University; andGary P.
