Engineers Without Borders USA (EWB-USA) is a non-pro t, humanitarian organization that seeks to improve the quality of life in developing countries through the implementation of basic infrastructure projects. ere are over 250 chapters of EWB-USA across the nation and every project a chapter undertakes involves a commitment of at least ve years with the partnering community. Under the leadership of Daniel Atkins, of the Civiltech Structural Department, the Chicago and Indianapolis Chapters of EWB have joined together to help the people of Mayanja Kibuke in the Bungoma District of western Kenya. e rst goal which EWB hopes to achieve is to assist the community in developing a sustainable, safe water supply source for the community.

For the last ve years Gary Overbay, a Principal at Civiltech, and his wife, Lynn, have been helping the people of Mayanja Kibuke improve their quality of

life through various small projects. On January 20, their involvement increased when Lynn and Daniel, along with six other EWB members, embarked on a 11-day trip to Mayanja Kibuke to assess the community's water needs and gather the necessary data to design and construct a potable water supply within the Village. Currently, members of the community are required to travel 8 kilometers to reach a clean water source. e purpose of this assessment trip is to build relationships with local leaders, establish a location for a community water well within the village, help create a mechanism of ownership for the well, and lastly, to educate

the community on the care and maintenance of the well.

e next issue of the newsletter will highlight the experiences as well

as the outcome of this assessment trip.

Civiltech was part of the design team for the ree Oaks Recreation Area, which received an Honor Award in the 2011 ACEC-Illionis' Engineering Excellence Awards Competition.

ree Oaks Recreation Area is located in the heart of the City of Crystal Lake between Northwest Highway (US Route 14) and Rakow Road. e 500-acre facility is the result of an agreement between the City and Vulcan Materials, which led to the turnover of the gravel quarry property to the City following completion of mining activities. e City had a vision to “recycle” the quarry into a positive amenity for the residents of Crystal Lake. In addition, the redevelopment of this property provides a cornerstone for the City’s redevelopment plans in the Route 14 corridor, bringing a positive impact to the City’s economic development.

e facility features a 4,400 square-foot lakehouse set between two lakes with pristine water clarity and excellent shing. e City has been stocking the lakes for several years to provide a unique shing experience for the patrons. Other amenities include: a playground, a spray park, a swimming area with beach, two marinas with rental boats, a picnic grove with a 2,000 square-foot pavilion and outdoor replace, three miles of multi-use trails with an “Interpretive

Boardwalk”, a sled hill, sand volleyball courts, a dog exercise area with water access, and an area for scuba diving. e facility is linked to the McHenry County Conservation District’s Prairie Trail system, which provides convenient bicycle access from other areas of the city. Furthermore, the facility has incorporated bioswales, rain gardens and over 28-acres of native prairie restoration on the property as part of the City’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure.

Civiltech was involved with the concept planning and designed the access drives and improvements to South Main Street and Northwest Highway, the parking lots, signing, utilities (water main, sanitary sewer, and a sanitary sewer li station), and portions of the storm sewer system. Civiltech also assisted in plan preparation of grading, erosion control, and was involved with coordination and administration during construction of the facility.

e roadway required an extensive amount of earthwork as it curves along the northern boundary of the LaFarge Quarry. Grade changes as much as 30 feet were required to meet the new roadway pro le. Because of this, over 400,000 cubic yards of earthwork was necessary to build the project, and a 1,000 foot long MSE retaining wall was also designed and built varying in height from 3 to 20 feet.

Due to the earthwork and proximity to the Fox River, sediment control was a major concern. erefore, the resident engineer and team worked closely with the various agency representatives, especially the Kane – DuPage Soil and Water Conservation District. Multiple erosion control systems were placed to continuously update and augment the erosion prevention plan.

As a result of the quality work Civiltech provided, the western contract of the new Stearns Road was a major success and completed in its ultimate cross sections on time. Kane County was so impressed that they presented the Contractor of the Year Award for this section of the full improvement.
