vision of exclusivity, innovation and passion. “Sergio’s values of elegance, purity and innovation are in our DNA,” Filippini said. “They are an important part of who we are and what make the Pininfarina touch so unique. This concept car is both an expression of our history and our vision for the future. It embodies the very principles Sergio embraced throughout his career. We wanted to take Sergio’s original thinking of over 30 years ago and create a modern version of his ideas with a very exclusive and exciting design,” Filippini said. Technology pioneersThroughout Pininfarina’s history, creativeness, innovation, technology and industrial feasibility have always coexisted harmoniously from the very early days of the company. Such forward thinking continues to this day. “We see technology as an enabler of innovation and efficiency that allows our designers to spend more time being creative,” Filippini said. “The Sergio Concept Car was an ambitious undertaking because we had very little time to see the project through to completion before the Geneva Motor Show,” he said. “With Dassault Systèmes’ (3DS) 3DEXPERIENCE Platform and CATIA for Creative Designers, our designers and engineers were able to work in concert to produce an esthetically innovative and aerodynamic design under a very tight schedule.”

Using innovative virtual clay modeling and 3D sketching features in CATIA for Creative Designers, Pininfarina designers were able to express their creativity and experiment in the earliest stages of development with a variety of approaches and designs, and to quickly converge on the most appropriate shape and configuration of the Sergio Concept Car. The highly precise 3D virtual model was rich in detail and production-ready Class A surfaces.

A history of designWhen Pininfarina decided to pay tribute to the company’s legendary president, Sergio Pininfarina, by creating a special concept car in his honor and presenting it at the annual Geneva International Motor Show, staff knew completing the car in a few months would be a challenge. Their determination, however, was fueled by admiration for a visionary known for his forward thinking and revolutionary designs. “Throughout his career, Sergio was a model for designers who believed, like him and his father before him, that a car is not just a machine; it is a work of art,” Fabio Filippini, vice president design, Pininfarina, said. An ambassador of Italian design to the world, Sergio Pininfarina helped shape the company that his father, Battista “Pinin” Farina, founded in 1930, into a prestigious international design house. “It is always satisfying to hear that our designs are appreciated for their aesthetic quality and originality,” Filippini said. “It is undoubtedly why many world-famous brands turn to us to design their products. But we go beyond creating a single product. We provide them with a total idea- to-production experience with a full range of services,” he said. Challenge Pininfarina had only a few months to develop a new concept car in time for the Geneva International Motor Show.

SolutionThe prestigious Italian design house used 3DEXPERIENCE technology from Dassault Systèmes, including CATIA for Creative Designers, to deliver the perfect design under a very tight schedule.

BenefitsWorking on a single platform helped designers and engineers to collaborate efficiently and to visualize their progress on a 3D virtual model complete with complex surfaces, textures and colors.

“We adopted a multi-phased approach in which we first created preliminary shapes with CATIA Imagine & Shape and then visualized each one with the Live Rendering application. The ability to experience each design variation in 3D in a realistic virtual environment was very much appreciated and helped us to rapidly converge on the perfect design for the Sergio Car,” Marco Capolicchio, responsible for surface modeling, Pininfarina said. “With Imagine & Shape, we transformed the car’s shape into a precise 3D geometric model using subdivision surfaces and created a mesh that our designers were able to easily deform and reshape at will,” Capolicchio said. “In the second phase, we enhanced the technical content of the model by generating precise Class A surfaces, complete with manufacturing specifications, using the 3DEXPERIENCE surface modeling application ICEM.

Working as a communityWith CATIA for Creative Designers, all design and engineering information is available in one unique model and accessible to the community of project stakeholders. “Our designers’ styling features, including textures and colors, were combined with the technical features developed by Pininfarina engineers. Everyone saw what his colleagues were doing, which facilitated the exchange of ideas, eliminated the frustration of time-consuming redesign work and accelerated the decision-making process,” Luca Margonari, team leader CAS modeler, said.

“This concept car is a tribute to a pioneer and the man behind some of the automotive world’s most successful car designs,” Filippini said. “Sergio’s legacy of Italian craftsmanship, innovative thinking and traditional family values are ingrained in every Pininfarina design. We believe automobile lovers deserve more than just a car. They are entitled to a memorable experience when they get behind the wheel of a Pininfarina creation,” Filippini said. “My dream is to one day see the Sergio Car on the road. 3DEXPERIENCE has helped us come this far and to transform our ideas into reality. Who knows? If the Sergio Concept Car is a hit with the public, we may just be one step closer to achieving this dream.”
