Our 2016 STARS seminars featured a range of new sustainable travel activities for young Londoners. Students met our travel superheroes and were awarded their STARS certificates and medals to reward their schools’ commitment to safe and active travel.

More than 255 schools attended the seminars and had a great time. We launched our new STARS logo and strapline at the events and introduced a badge competition to design a logo for our 10th anniversary celebrations this year. More than half of all London schools are STARS-accredited, which is contributing to an eight per cent reduction in car use.

Any school that was unable to attend can see the activities on our website. These activities can count towards STARS accreditation so why not run one in your classroom?

The World ParaAthletics Championships ( 14-23 July) and the IAAF World Championships (4-13 August) are coming to London this summer.

The World ParaAthletics Championships are coming

The former Olympic Stadium will host both world championships, making it the biggest event to take place at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park since 2012.

The Mayor is working with the organisers, London 2017, to make tickets available to schools across London for the World ParaAthletics Championships. There will also be free, tailored educational resources available for all teachers to download soon. All schools that sign up will also be the first to hear about the Mayor’s ticket offer and other exciting opportunities, including mascots news and athlete visits.

The refurbishment of the Natural History Museum starts this month. If you’re planning a trip there, travel to Gloucester Road as it will be easier to get to the museum from there.

School Party Travel scheme updateWhen you’re booking tickets under the School Party Travel scheme, you may not be able to select some stations if improvement work is taking place there. To find out more about the scheme, visit schoolparty. tfl.gov.uk

Network Rail workConstruction work continues in the Shenfield area until late May with no TfL Rail service between Brentwood and Shenfield during this time. Replacement buses run between these stations. Find out more at tfl.gov.uk/shenfield-improvements

British Science Week, 10-19 March, is the ideal opportunity to introduce your students to the world of engineering with one of two 60-minute science workshops at the London Transport Museum.

Monday 13 March – London moving (key stage 2) Go behind the scenes of London’s transport and discover the science that makes it all tick in ‘London Moving’. See transport change before your eyes as our city moves from horse power to steam, and discover what it will look like in the future.

Thursday 16 March – world’s firstunderground railway (key stage 2) Discover the engineering secrets of the London Underground. Students will work with an engineer from TfL or Siemens during this interactive workshop. Find out how engineers used science and maths to build the Underground 150 years ago, and continue to keep London moving today.

Workshops cost £80 per class of 30 students. Spaces are limited so book early to avoid disappointment.

Well done to our festive card winnersWe'd like to congratulate the winners of last year’s festive card competition. Well done to winners Anastasija from Park Primary School in Newham and Kiera from Branfil Primary School in Havering. They have received printed copies of their card design, will take part in an insider’s TfL station tour and enjoy a Tube ride in the driver’s cab along the Victoria line.

Thank you to all the schools that sent us their brilliant designs – it wasn’t easy to pickthe winners.

We asked primary schools in London to design a festive card showing different ways Father Christmas or Perry the TfL penguin could travel around the Capital during the holidays.

This card showing ‘How will Perry do his Christmas shopping’ was designed by Anastasija Pukianec, age 6, from Park Primary School in Newham.

London Ambitions, funded by the Mayor, has set up a new portal to make it easier for schools to work with organisations, from local businesses to museums and galleries. The aim is to inspire children about the world of work and broaden their horizons from the earliest opportunity.

The benefits include:

• Helping schools to link classroom learning with future careers

• Working in partnership with local businesses

• Raising the profile of your school through new opportunities

With a range of fantastic trips and resources on offer, more than 250 schools and businesses have already taken up this free opportunity.

To find out more and sign up, visit london.gov.uk/ambitions or email [email protected]

Inspiring the next generation

Inspired by the secrets of underground London, the London Curriculum has created free teaching resources for primary school children. These explore hidden rivers, dungeons, secret wartime bunkers and Roman houses, as well as the

London Underground’s art and poetry programmes. These resources will help bring the new national curriculum to life and includes activity plans for English, science, art & design and history. ‘Going Underground’ lets your students take a peek beneath the busy streets of our city. Schools that sign up to the

curriculum will be given access to new resources and opportunities for key stage 2, including trips to the Houses of Parliament, the Natural History Museum and Guildhall Art Gallery and Roman Amphitheatre.

Find out more at www.london.gov.uk/london-curriculum or email [email protected]

Haringey schools took part in a Park to Park bike ride last June, travelling 10km and having lots of fun on the way.

Students at Stamford Hill, St Michael’s, Bounds Green, Holy Trinity, Crowland, North Haringey, Bruce Grove, Ferry Lane, Risley Avenue, Our Lady of Muswell and Riverside SEN school were all trained to level 2 in Bikeability by Cycling Instructor Ltd, Haringey’s cycling training provider. The instructors then visited the schools to check bikes and teach pupils and staff how to check them themselves. A total of 130 pupils and 40 adults rode across the streets and parks of Haringey, starting at Lordship Recreation Ground and ending at Alexandra Park.

The Parkland Walk follows the course of the old railway that ran between Finsbury Park

and Alexandra Palace. The 4.5-mile route provides tranquility and a chance to enjoy greenery in the very heart of the city.

It’s London’s longest Local Nature Reserve and supports a range of habitats and wildlife. To find out more, go to haringey.gov.uk and search for ‘parks’.
