OverviewThe purpose of the transparencies that follow is to review usageand mechanics skills in a proofreading context.

Using the Warm-upsYou may tailor the use of these proofreading warm-ups to theneeds of your classroom. However, they have been designed toprovide a pair of sentences to use as quick, five- to ten-minuteproofreading activities, which are most effective when studentsdiscuss and explain their corrections orally. Each pair of sentenceson the transparencies is followed by revised sentences with corrections shown in boldface type.

Skills CoverageThe types of errors found in each sentence pair are identified inthe Key to Skills Coverage pages.

Student Responses May VaryThe “Sentences Corrected” column presents, for each sentence, one set of possible corrections. Because other equally correct revi-sions are possible for many items, your students’ answers mayvary from those shown in this booklet. Here are a few examples:

■ If a sentence contains a verb-tense error, e.g., a present-tenseverb and a past-tense verb, the error may be corrected by usingeither present tense for both verbs or past tense for both.

■ A run-on sentence may be corrected by inserting either a periodor a semicolon between the independent clauses or by insertinga comma and a coordinating conjunction.

■ Other variations are due to stylistic choice. For example, someauthorities assert that in a series of three or more items acomma should precede the coordinating conjunction, whileother authorities say that the comma is superfluous. In theseProofreading Warm-ups sentences, the series comma is used.

Variance in answers is also due to the fact that the individual sentences have minimal context. The manner in which a studentchooses to correct a sentence—e.g., whether to view a modifyingphrase as misplaced and so move it to another position in the sentence—may depend on the way in which he or she interpretsthe sentence. Allowing for student interpretation and creativityand asking students to explain their answers may lead to fruitfuldiscussions about grammar, usage, and the nature of language.
