Network reliability is a priority for electrical utilities. Supply interruptions add to maintenance costs & affect customer service. Substation faults are particularly expensive and often the result is badly damaged equipment – difficult to repair or replace.

For over 30yrs Raysulate products have been protecting substations and overhead distribution/transmission networks around the world by insulating vulnerable bare metalwork. Birds and animals often enter substations and interfere with overhead lines causing faults by bridging air clearances. Outages occur especially on distribution equipment where conductor spacings allow relatively small birds and animals to bridge phases.

The Raychem Raysulate system of tubes, tapes, sheets, preformed covers and barriers provide a proven, cost-effective and easy-to-install retrofit solution to bird and animal outages. All products in the Raysulate Insulation Enhancement System range use the same crosslinking polymer technology that has given Raychem electrical products high performance and reliability for over 35yrs.

COMMON TYPES OF RAYSULATE (other styles also available):

BCAC-IC Bushing Connection Protection Cover – Designed to prevent animal caused outages on breaker and transformer bushings ranging from 15 to 35 kV.

Quickly & easily installed around bushings and connections by wrapping the double hinged design around the insulator’s top skirt and snapping it in place with a robust latching mechanism. The cover allows conductors to exit from both the top and side interfaces without the need to trim the cover. The design allows for visible inspections of oil fill levels on transformer bushings as well.

Made from superior high performance HV materials. The rugged, non-tracking, UV resistant, high temperature polymer ensures long-term performance even in the most extreme environmental conditions.

MVCC Medium Voltage Conductor Cover – A flexible cold applied wrap around insulation cover for use in short lengths on curved conductor or jumper leads. For applications up to 25kV phase to ground.

Provide high quality electrical insulation, these covers are made from a non-tracking silicone material that is suitable for harsh MV outdoor environments and are split for easy installation.

They are flexible allowing installation on tight bends. Two sizes are currently available and will fit conductors with diameters ranging from .50” – 1.125”.

HVBT High Voltage Busbar Tape – A heat shrinkable adhesive coated tape which is ideal for use on complex shapes & situations where busbars cannot be disconnected. The adhesive does not bond to metalwork, allowing easy removal for inspection and maintenance.

Designed to combine the integrity of a heat-shrinkable tubing with the versatility of a wraparound product. It is quick and easy to install. It is compatible with all other Raychem MV insulation enhancement products. Excellent anti-tracking properties and manufactured from non-halogen based materials, reducing the toxic and corrosive effects in the event of fire, it has no shelf life.

BCIC Bus Connection Insulating Covers – A wide range of standard Raychem BCIC preformed covers is available for any substation equipment connections. Suitable for applications up to 36kV

Designed to protect energised conductors or busbars from flashovers due to contact from birds and other wildlife . UV stable & track resistant Raychem material ensures years of reliable service .

A variety of different shapes and sizes are available, installation is quick & easy, entry & exit holes can be trimmed to size onsite. BCIC covers can be re-entered for other maintenance needs and then reused, thus lowering overall lifetime costs.

HVIS High Voltage Insulating Sheet – Heat shrinkable sheet enables rapid and reliable insulation of T-joints, L-joints and difficult shapes, the sheet can be cut to size on site and loosely secured in place with clamps and brackets until it is heated and permanently in place.

It will provide flashover protection up to 17.5 kV or up to 25 kV (single layer). Re-usable joint covers can also be made to allow access or maintenance when required. Manufactured from a non-halogen based material, noxious and corrosive effects are greatly reduced in the event of a fire, it has excellent anti-tracking properties, UV & weather resistant properties and has no shelf life.

BBIT/BPTM Busbar Insulation Tubing – Raychem BBIT/BPTM heat shrinkable products are suitable for use on long runs of rectangular or round busbars. Excellent flexibility, will conform tightly to a wide range of sizes.

The tubings are designed to eliminate animal outages as well as provide additional insulation value in cases of tight clearances. BPTM is used up to 25KV and BBIT used up to 36KV although under certain circumstances can be used at far higher voltages.

BISG Bus Insulator ‘Squirrel’ Guard – A rigid polymeric disc that fits between sheds of post insulators & equipment bushings. Prevents animals from bridging the phase-to-ground clearance. For applications up to 36kV.

Superior high voltage, non-tracking, UV-resistant polymer materials used in it’s manufacture, ensures long-term performance even in the most extreme environmental conditions.

Designed for easier hot-stick installation by incorporating a threaded area in the guard. The integrated threads eliminate the need to hold a nut while installing the bolt assembly with a hot-stick.

MVLC Medium Voltage Line Cover – Cold applied retrofit cover that insulates overhead lines against flashovers. Versatile product can be used in a number of different applications up to 36kV.

Designed to insulate existing bare lines without costly conductor replacement expenditures or additional line hardware. Can be applied selectively on problem spans.

A special tool ensures fast and reliable application on energised lines. Three sizes cover conductors from 16 to 800 mm2.

Surge Arrestor Eye Bolt ConnectorEyebolt connectors are the answer when an unbroken lead through the surge arrestor is required. The lead can come from the DDO to the surge arrestor and on to the transformer without having to be cut, lugged and stacked onto the stud.

This connector simply attaches to the surge arrestor stud and allows the lead to be clamped on its way through.

The increasing popularity of gas insulated switchgear called for the development of appropriate connection systems to standardised bushings in accordance to EN50181. TE Connectivity Energy has developed two systems, one is related to the outer cone (Elbows) and one related to the inner cone system (RPIT).

TE Connectivity Energy has several decades of experience in the field of hermetically insulated termination systems for medium voltage applications. Thus the bushings designed for gas insulated switchgear meet the standard EN50181 for connection type size 2 (800 A) and size 3 (1250 A) at operating voltage 12kV up to 36 (42)kV.

The basic construction of the mating termination follows well known design principles and incorporates a lamellate contact system which ensures reliable current transmission via a cone clamp to the conductor. The interface between the silicone body of the termination and the bushing is kept permanently sealed via the pressure of a spring between the insulator and the flange of the termination cover. The termination cover is sealed against moisture ingress at the flange area with well known sealing methods and at the cable side with heat-shrinkable tubing.

The Annual Connection provides Cable Jointers and Line Mechanics, with varying levels of experience, the opportunity to participate in an industry wide competition – The Connexis (formerly ESITO) Annual Connection. With two competitions running over three days, the competitions provide a platform for competitors to test the quality of their workmanship, technical knowledge and safety of their work practices.

Participation encourages excellence in the chosen field, ultimately benefiting employers, the wider electricity supply industry and even electricity consumers by offering a more reliable supply.

2014 will see more exciting events being introduced to both competitions this year. There are 12 cable jointers registered to compete and 12 line mechanic teams also registered, with one team all the way from Australia – a first for the event.

TE are proud to once again have the honour of being premier sponsors of the Cable Jointers Competition and TransNet have the honour of being premier sponsor of the Line Mechanic Competition. We believe these competitions offer the participants and their employers more than a platform to compete, it also enhances team work, company pride and

working under pressure of time and scrutiny from a judge.

Every year the quality of the competitors work steps up and we’re sure this year will be no different.

The event will be held at the Christchurch Air Force Museum in Wigram. Spectators are welcomed and encouraged, it’s a great spectacle to observe so if you can, get down there to support your favourite competitor/s.
