Il fervido desiderio (The fervent wish)

Quando verrà quel dì When will that day comeche riveder potrò When I may see againquel che l'amante cor tanto desia? That which the loving heart so desires?

Quando verrà quel dì When will that day comeche in sen t'accoglierò, When I welcome you to my bosom, bella fiamma d'amor, anima mia? Beautiful flame of love, my own soul?

Dolente immagine di Fille mia (Sorrowful image)

Dolente immagine di Fille mia, Sorrowful image of my Fille, perché sì squallida mi siedi accanto? Why do you sit so desolate beside me?Che più desideri? Dirotto pianto What more do you wish for? Streams of tears

io sul tuo cenere versai finor. Have I poured on your ashes.

Temi che immemore de' sacri giuri Do you fear that, forgetful of sacred vows,io possa accendermi ad altra face? That I might burn by another flame?Ombra di Fillide, riposa in pace; Shade of Fille, rest peacefully;è inestinguibile l'antico ardor. The old flame of love cannot be extinguished.

Vaga luna, che inargenti (Lovely moon, you who shed silver light)

Vaga luna, che inargenti Lovely moon, you who shed silver light

queste rive e questi fiori On these shores and on these flowersed inspiri agli elementi And breathe the languageil linguaggio dell'amor; Of love to the elements;testimonio or sei tu sola You are now the sole witnessdel mio fervido desir, Of my ardent longing,ed a lei che m'innamora And can recount my throbs and sighsconta i palpiti e i sospir. To her who fills me with love.

Dille pur che lontananza Tell her too that distanceil mio duol non può lenir, Cannot assuage my grief, che se nutro una speranza, That if I cherish a hope,

ella è sol nell'avvenir. It is only for the future.Dille pur che giorno e sera Tell her that, day and night, conto l'ore del dolor, I count the hours of sorrow, che una speme lusinghiera That a flattering hopemi conforta nell'amor. Comforts me in my love.

Svarta rosor (Black roses)

Säg hvarför är du så ledsen i dag, Tell me, why are you so unhappy today,Du, som alltid är så lustig och glad? You who are always so cheerful and bright?Och inte är jag mera ledsen i dag In fact I am no more unhappy today

Än när jag tyckes dig lustig och glad; Than when you think of me cheerful and bright;Ty sorgen har nattsvarta rosor. For grief has roses black as night.

I mitt hjerta der växer ett rosendeträd In my heart there grows a flowering rose treeSom aldrig nånsin vill lemna mig fred. That will never ever leave me in peace.Och på stjelkarne sitter tagg vid tagg, And the stalks are all covered with thorn on thorn,Och det vållar mig ständigt sveda och agg; And it nags and torments me without respite;Ty sorgen har nattsvarta rosor. For grief has roses black as night.

Men af rosor blir det en hel klenod, But from roses there comes a flawless jewel,

Än hvita som döden, än röda som blod. As white as death, as red as blood.Det växer och växer. Jag tror jag förgår, It grows bigger and bigger. I feel my strength fail,I hjertträdets rötter det rycker och slår; It tears and gnaws at the roots of my heart;Ty sorgen har nattsvarta rosor. For grief has roses black as night.

Den första kyssen (The first kiss)

På silvermolnets kant satt aftonstjärnan, On the silver cloud lining sat the evening star,från lundens skymning frågte henne tärnan: From the grove’s twilight the maiden asked her:

Säg, aftonstjärna, vad i himlen tänkes, Say, evening star, what do they think in heavennär första kyssen åt en älskling skänkes? When the first kiss is given to your beloved?

Och himlens blyga dotter hördes svara: And heaven’s shy daughter answered: På jorden blickar ljusets änglaskara, To earth look the angels of lightoch ser sin egen sällhet speglad åter; And see their own bliss reflected back;blott döden vänder ögat bort och gråter. Only death turns its eyes away and weeps.

Flickan kom ifrån sin älsklings mote (The girl came from meeting her lover)

Flickan kom ifrån sin älsklings möte,

The girl came from meeting her lover, kom med röda händer. Modern sade: returned with red hands. Her mother said:"Varav rodna dina händer, flicka?" “What has made your hands red, girl?”

Flickan sade: "Jag har plockat rosor The girl said, “I was picking roses och på törnen stungit mina händer." and pricked my hands on the thorns.”

Åter kom hon från sin älsklings möte, Again she came from meeting her lover, kom med röda läppar. Modern sade: Returned with red lips. Her mother said,"Varav rodna dina läppar, flicka?" “What reddened your lips, girl?” Flickan sade: "Jag har ätit hallon The girl said, “I was eating raspberries och med saften målat mina läppar." And with the juice I stained my lips.”

Åter kom hon från sin älsklings möte, Again she came from meeting her lover,

kom med bleka kinder. Modern sade: came with pale cheeks. Her mother said,"Varav blekna dina kinder, flicka?" “What has made your cheeks so pale, girl?” Flickan sade: "Red en grav, o moder! The girl said, “Oh mother, dig a grave for me!” Göm mig där och ställ ett kors däröver, Hide me there and set a cross above, och på korset rista, som jag säger: And on the cross write as I tell you:

En gång kom hon hem med röda händer, “Once she came home with red hands, ty de rodnat mellan älskarns händer. They had turned red with her lover’s hands.En gång kom hon hem med röda läppar, Once she came home with red lips,ty de rodnat under älskarns läppar. They had turned red beneath her lover’s lips. Senast kom hon hem med bleka kinder, Finally she came home with pale cheeks,

ty de bleknat genom älskarns otro." They had turned pale at her lover’s betrayal.”
