Understanding Context
iema.net
Context
• ISO 14001 in terms of scale, scope, potential to support change
• Organisation specific – understanding key internal & external factors
• Compliance obligations
• Needs and expectations of interested parties
Lifecycle perspective
iema.net iema.net
Lifecycle Perspective
Risks and opportunities & compliance
iema.net iema.net
Risks & Opportunities
• Environmental risk (aspects and impacts)
• Organisational risk
• Potential opportunities
• External environmental conditions
• Control and influence considering a life-cycle perspective
• Compliance obligations
iema.net iema.net
Risks & Opportunities
• Potentially different approaches to assessing risks and opportunities? • combining this with your aspects evaluation in a single process – or as separate
processes
• Thinking more broadly as a consequence of “changing environmental conditions” & “life-cycle perspective”?
• Differentiating between environmental risks and business risks and how these are managed
Operational Control
iema.net iema.net
Lifecycle Perspective
iema.net iema.net
Operational Control
Controls
• Design & development process considering each life-cycle stage
• Procurement of products and services
• Communicate requirements
• Information for forward life-cycle stages
Communication
Communication The new ISO 14001 requires that “environmental information that is communicated….is reliable”
• Understanding what “reliable” means
• Internal assurance approaches to addressing this new requirement
• Potential implications for how you communicate externally, e.g. to regulators, on or about products etc
Performance Improvement
iema.net iema.net
Performance Improvement
• More explicit focus on improving environmental performance
• More pro-active on fulfilling compliance obligations
• “demonstrate knowledge and understanding of compliance status”
• Enhanced requirements on communication and setting performance indicators to evaluate performance – including the reliability of environmental information

Forms of Recognition
ISO 14001:2015 identifies four ways for an organisation to demonstrate conformity with the requirements
i. making a self-determination and self-declaration, or
ii. seeking confirmation of its conformance by parties having an interest in the organization, such as customers, or
iii. seeking confirmation of its self-declaration by a party external to the organization, or
iv. seeking certification/registration of its environmental management system by an external organization.

Revision Timetable
• ISO 14001 published as an International and European Standard on 15th September 2015
• International Accreditation Forum has set a 3 year period for transitioning to ISO 14001:2015:
• i.e. 14th September 2018 • ISO 14004 published in March 2016 – provides guidance on
the implementation of an environmental management system

Key Issues for users
1. How to interpret the new requirements
2. How to get more business value out of your system and align with business drivers
3. Competence and capability (internally, external auditors)
4. Implementing the new standard from scratch – including for smaller organisations
5. Life-cycle perspective – across the value-chain (suppliers, procurement, design, end-of-life)
6. Managing the interface between the organisation & environment, including how to respond to changing environmental conditions
7. Integration of environmental management into core organisational processes and strategic decision making
