INTRODUCTION
Outcomes of this research project: 1) A laboratory-scale microgrid: Comprises of solar energy PV, wind energy conversion system, battery storage, data acquisition system, and power quality analysis device, connected to the local network (grid) along with a metering system. 2) A geographical information system (GIS) platform: live data from all components connected to the grid on a map 3) Conceptual Roadmap for Transition to Smart Grid: By considering: Experiences elsewhere, particularly from Australia; Interviewing stake holders (the ones who where available); Other studies.

DEFINITION
A smart grid consists of a power grid equipped with communications, controls, computers, SCADA, and other new technologies working together to respond to the integration of renewable energy sources to the grid, demand side management, automatic network reconfiguration, automatic supply restoration and in general respond to the continuous changes expected in the power grids of the future.

SMART DISTRIBUTION
1. Distribution Automation: Network automation and remote control. 2. Smart Aggregation: Aggregation of all sources, including distributed generators, and energy management on the distribution level. 3. Smart Metering: Smart metering infrastructure to facilitate consumer involvement in demand management.
