TRANSITION TO SCHOOL

It is wonderful to welcome new students to school this

term. We are looking forward to running a transition to

school programme in conjunction with the early

childhood and daycare centres. We still have vacancies

for new students, so spread the word!

FUTURE

Our two senior classrooms Te Kahu and Kakapo headed

to the Careers Expo last week. It is a great opportunity

for our students to be introduced to a range of career

opportunities. We work hard to give our students as

many opportunities to build on their knowledge and

outlook for the future.

FAMILY MASS AND SACRAMENTAL

PROGRAMME

Set aside some time this term for our Family Mass. We

always work hard to have as many of our students

taking part as possible. Family Mass is on Sunday 28th

May at 9.00am. We ask for each whanau to bring some

morning tea to share with the parish and would be very

grateful for help in the kitchen with cups of tea and

coffee. This is a great way to meet our wonderful

parishioners if you are new to our school. We have a

wonderful group of sacramental candidates this year.

The programme began last week. Helena Payne, Joyce

Bacica, Lou King and Father Carlo will be supporting

and running this programme. They do a wonderful job,

and we keep our candidates and the leaders in our

prayers.

Our theme for the year “Growth” -Caring for God’s

Creation is all go! You will see and hear from your

child(ren) the learning that is happening around our

Science focus. Hands on experiments are the focus

throughout the school as our students learn about the 5

different science capabilities.

Science lends itself so well to literacy, maths, technology

and art. Our students are igniting their scientific

knowledge and ideas and discovering new concepts at

the moment. I will continue to post photos of this great

learning on our school Facebook page for those that

have access to this. There are also some pictures of a

couple of examples we have shared on Facebook too.

VISION

I have really enjoyed working with our students, staff,

whanau, parish and the Board around re-shaping our

school vision. This is a vital statement that represents

who we are as a school, and what we are working

towards. The vision shapes our point of different here

at PCS. We are focussing on the vision so that all stake

holders are going to know it as part of who we are.

Key elements really stood out in discussions with you as

the stake holders, such as:

Christ centred, leadership, academic success, relating to

others, contributing, excelling, holistic, community all

working together “mahi tahi”. With much discussion

and input, we are continuing to work on the vision to

take us forward.

TED Talks.

Ever heard of them?

If you haven’t, TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design, and is an annual conference attracting the best and brightest in these fields to speak briefly on their area of expertise. TED talks are freely available through the internet and apps as one of the aims of the TED organisers is the wide and free sharing of knowledge.

This year’s conference had the theme of ‘The Future You’ and one of the more well known speakers was His Holiness Pope Francis.

Pope Francis spoke for 17 enthralling minutes on the future as he sees it, a future in line with the message of Christ, full of good Samaritans who see other people as people and not as con-sumers.

He lamented the repositioning of people to the sides of society’s roads much the same as the injured man from the story.

He lamented the move to focus on material things over people and how in our increasingly technologically and economically driven socie-ties how much waste is created in materials and more tragically in human lives.

“How wonderful would it be”, he said, ”if the growth

of scientific and technological innovation would come

along with more equality and social inclusion. How

wonderful would it be, while we discover faraway plan-

ets, to rediscover the needs of the brothers and sisters

orbiting around us”.

He spoke of hope being a strength and the nat-ural behaviour of the compassionate and the brave and He finished by saying

“The future of humankind isn't exclusively in the hands

of politicians, of great leaders, of big companies. Yes,

they do hold an enormous responsibility. But the future

is, most of all, in the hands of those people who recog-

nize the other as a "you" and themselves as part of an

"us." We all need each other.”

Powerful stuff indeed.

I am going to be Principal for the day today. I am

going to be on duty and will help the kids. I am

going to write in the newsletter too. I might get

Every Monday we celebrate the weekend sporting

success and team progress. However, it is always

very exciting to acknowledge the gifts and talents that

some of our students are showing and using in the Far

North Mangonui representative levels.

In term 1, Danika and Ash Lucich competed in Dar-

gaville attending the Northland Primary Schools

Swimming Sports. Ash came 5th in the 10yr boys 25

metre breastroke and Danika came 5th in the girls 8

and under 25 metre backstroke. They are thrilled and

so are wel Congratulations—this is an exciting new

competition that we hope families can work together

to attend in the future!

This week Maani Marsden and Taleigha Hunt

have been selected in the Mangonui netball

representative team. Congratulations girls! We

are really proud of you! They will be competing

in Auckland, Whangarei and Kerikeri. Maani is in

the year 8 team and Taleigha is in the year 7

team. They are also part of the North Ferns

travelling to to Fiji in December.

Congratulations to Michelle Haines who has won

our “Mothers Day” caught being good award.

She receives a Duffy Book called “Rants in the

Dark—from one tired mama to another”. It is

such a treat to nominate so many Mum’s who

are doing such a wonderful job! Congratulations

Michelle!!

We learnt:

- Each colour is a different pigment. Yellow pigments are xanthophyll; orange pigments are carotenoids; red pigments are

anthocyanins; and green pigments are chlorophyl.

Each leaf had a different pattern of colours (pigments)

Some pigment colours travelled further up the filter paper strips than other colours.

Xanthophyll (yellow) pigments travelled the most.

The darker pigments travel further than the lighter pigments.

The different coloured pigments separate from one another. This was most obvious with the yellow-orange Nyssa

leaves where the xanthophyll (yellow) separated from the carotenoids (orange) pigment.

We opened our meeting as always with a prayer, by Father Carlo. After our prayer, we be-

gan by sharing and discussing the Principal, financial and correspondence reports.

Vision Statement

What a fantastic evening, we spent quite some time sharing ideas about our loved school.

We discussed a new Vision Statement and how to incorporate all the special things our

school has into one short statement. We also discussed future plans for the way forward

with our school, what we would like to see in the next 1-3 years. We had many ideas, along

with the staff, students and whanau. Hopefully the final product will represent our school

that truly shows our passion for the betterment of our students.

Maintenance / Property

Following on from our previous discussions around the shade/rain protection, quotes have

been received, and we are still needing to look at other options. This is quite a priority for

our school to give our children a dry and sun sheltered place to be, however it is taking some

work to get there, and we are looking at all possible options to get this done.

NZSTA AGM

We went through a brief discussion of ways in which we could participate in this this AGM as

this year it is based in Dunedin. We are hopeful we may be able to either put forward some

letters or even video conference in.

Mahi Tahi Rua

We are excited to be planning a second Mahi Tahi night with our kids for Term 3. This is a

time where we can keep working together to put forward any ideas we have and parents are

able to talk with the staff and the BOT about this.

We closed our meeting with a prayer, thank you Father Carlo. Next Board meeting is Tues-

day June 13th 2017 at 5.00pm.
