Introduction
The Year 6 transition booklet
This booklet has been carefully put together in order to provide families of
children moving into Year 7 with as much information and advice as
possible so that the transition from primary to secondary education is as
smooth and stress-free as it can be. In light of COVID-19 further infor-
mation will be sent out as soon as we receive more information from the
DFE.
Important documents
At the back of the booklet are a number of very important documents
that we would like you to complete and return in due course.
1
Welcome from the Executive
Headteacher and Head of School
Dear Parent/Carer, I am delighted to confirm that your child has secured a place at Rodillian. We are very much looking forward to working closely with all our new students and their families in order to ensure that the move from primary to secondary education is as effective as possible.
Our GCSE results continue to exceed national average. In 2019, the number of students achieving a 4+ in English and Maths GCSE, was 72% compared to National 64%. We also achieved 49% 5+ in English and Maths compared to National which was 43%. In addition our Progress 8 score trend over the past three years is above average. Our sixth form students also had a very successful year, with all those who applied to university getting places. May I finish by saying how much I am looking forward to meeting you and your child and working with you and them in the future. Yours sincerely Mr Andrew Goulty Ms Lorraine Bradley Executive Headteacher Head of School

Expectations of academy uniform
All students must wear plain black shoes* that have no logos or white/coloured/metallic decorative elements. Boots and trainers are NOT allowed. Backless footwear is totally inappropriate and can be a health and safety hazard when using the many staircases in the academy or when working in some classroom environments.
School shirts and blouses must fit properly and must have a top button and full collar.
Linen trousers, black denim or fitted, legging-type trousers are not acceptable.
Jewellery is not allowed in the academy for any student at any time. A single watch may be worn. Any jewellery confiscated will be placed in an envelope and stored securely. It will only be returned to pupils on the following Friday at 2:30 pm. A detention will be issued.
Without exception, all make-up is banned in KS3 (years 7 and 8). This includes nail varnish and false nails.
Coats and other outdoor clothing must not be worn inside the academy building.
Students are only allowed to have natural hair colouring. Greens, blues, reds, silver-shades etc. are not allowed. Inappropriate fashion hairstyles are also not allowed. These include, very short ’crew-cut’ hairstyles, extreme styles, decorative shaved elements and motifs.
A thin black headband may be worn.
Please be aware:
1. Students who arrive at the academy with incorrect uniform will be removed to isolation immediately. The Rodillian Academy does not accept notes from parents or carers explaining issues relating to uniform. If your child arrives at the academy without the correct uniform or hairstyle, for whatever reason, they will be removed to isolation until the uniform or hairstyle has been corrected. An exception would be considered in light of a serious medical reason but only when a member of the pastoral team has seen a letter from a doctor, physiotherapist or other medical specialist to confirm that reason.
2. Confiscated items will be returned to pupils at 2:30 pm on the Friday that follows the confiscation. Items can be collected from the Head of School’s office. Where an item has been confiscated because it is deemed to be dangerous or that it poses a risk to pupil safety (sharp objects, laser pens etc.), the item will only be returned to a parent or carer.

Thinking about transport to and from the academy
The Rodillian Academy has a wide catchment area with students attending from around Rothwell, Wakefield and South Leeds and there are many different ways to travel to school to make sure that you arrive safely and on time. The table below is designed to help you with some of the different transport methods available and the following page provides details about the school buses.
Getting ready for Secondary School
On foot
Many of our students live within a mile of Rodillian and use this to their advantage by taking the healthy option and walking to school. Being aware of the dangers associated with busy road networks like Leeds/Wakefield Road and practicing good road safety is the key to enjoying this practical transport method.
Cycle
A growing number of children cycle to school, taking advantage of the secure and well-covered bicycle sheds at the front of the academy. We do ask that students wear cycle helmets whilst cycling to and from school and they also bring personal locks to chain their bicycle to the secure shed area. Please be aware that riding a bike on school site is not permitted and the sanction is a school detention.
By car
Parents are advised not to park in the marked bays in the main car park for the purpose of dropping children at the academy as this can delay or prevent teachers and other staff from parking.
By bus
The 110 is a public service bus. It journeys between the city centres of Wakefield and Leeds, passing by the bottom end of Longthorpe Lane as it travels along Wakefield/Leeds Road. Buses are timed at intervals of 15 minutes.
For your information
If the service buses listed on the following pages do not serve your area, a normal public bus may be the best option. For information on non-school services please visit www.wymetro.com or ring MetroLine on 0113 245 7676 between 7am and 10pm.
12
The school bus service
The school service buses are provided by CT Plus and Stanley Gath. The services listed below comprehen-sively cover the major routes along which our children live.
All students must have a half fare pass to access child rates on all buses. Two morning timetables are in operation throughout the week— On Monday, Thursday and Friday mornings, Timetable A will be used, which is indicated below. On Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, bus services will follow Timetable B in order to accommodate the ‘Rise-and-read’ programme . Details of Timetable B will be published and distributed before the start of Rise & Read

Helpful tips for catching school-service or public-service buses
Getting on the bus... If you are new to public transport, it’s a good idea to find the stop you will be using so you are confident you know where to go on your first day.
Make sure you have the correct pass and/or money. Remember to signal to the bus by putting your arm out as soon as you see the correct bus—If
you don’t signal to the driver they will not stop. Please note, when using a school bus you will have to adhere to the following code of conduct: CONDUCT ON THE BUS Remember to show your pass to the driver (where applicable).
Find a seat and stay seated for the journey. If there are no seats, hold onto the rail (where standing is permitted).
If the bus has seatbelts, they must be worn.
Do not distract the driver unless in an emergency. Do not damage the bus or interfere with the cctv or any other safety equipment.
Photos should not be taken without the prior consent of the person(s) concerned
Always behave sensibly throughout your journey.
Students causing concerns on the school buses will be dealt with in line with PD and may be placed on a Transport Contract or banned from using the buses altogether.
CONDUCT WHEN GETTING OFF THE BUS
When your stop is next, ring the bell once. If it has already been rung, you do not need to ring it again.
If you have to cross the road after you get off the bus, wait until the bus has moved off and you can see the road clearly in both directions, or go to the nearest available crossing.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF TRAVEL You are respectfully reminded that when registering to use the service you undertake to accept the terms and conditions of travel. This includes sanctions, which would be applied if the required standards of behaviour are not met. Parents need to be aware that if their child causes any damage or does not meet the required standard of behaviour on the bus they could:
Have their pass withdrawn.
Appropriate sanction in school in line with Positive Discipline (PD)
Be banned from the bus.
Be prosecuted by the police.
Be required to pay for any damage they have caused.
Our Young Person’s website www.generationm.co.uk is the one stop shop for the most up to date services and news. However, if you do have any queries please do not hesitate to contact the education transport team 0113 348 1122.

Edulink Edulink connects schools and parents, effectively and reliably using modern technology making essential communication easier for everyone. Edulink has changed the way the academy works by improving efficiencies and delivering cost savings for the academy. For parents there’s real value in the system; it make it easy for parents to read and respond to school requests, and this makes it the most effective parental engagement for schools. Email and text messaging will make huge savings for the academy and ensure that we deliver information instantly and straight into the hands of our parents. You will receive a request to register with Edulink when your child comes on roll with the acade-my and this will enable you to receive all communication being sent by staff.
For ease of use, we recommend you download the free Edlink App as this means you won’t
need to remember your login details, you won’t ever have to deal with browser issues and you’ll
receive all your important academy messages direct to your smartphone. You can download the App for your device through the app store: Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.overnetdata.edulinkone&hl=en_GB IOS: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/edulink-one/id1188809029?mt=8 Amazon Fire: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Overnet-Data-Ltd-EduLink-One/dp/B07K6MP8KG/
Parent Pay
Parent Pay allows you to add monies to your son/daughters account via an online system. The
academy requires all parents and carers to access Parent Pay in order to pay for school trips.
The system also allows you to add money and track your son/daughters lunch account. Your
son/daughter will receive the log in details for Parent Pay during their transition period.

Our curriculum and ethos
Rewards Rewards are designed to encourage positive behaviour and attitudes towards learning. Positive Discipline (PD) is exactly that; positive. The aim of Rodillian’s students is to achieve and succeed. Effort, achievement, resilience and success are recognised in a num-ber of different ways. All teaching and many non-teaching staff are provided with stamps and these will be awarded in a lesson or around the academy for good, very good or excellent effort or achievement, answering questions or just being helpful. Stamps add-up and turn into certificates. Students have a choice of how to ’cash-in’ their stamps; they can trade in their stamps throughout the year for certain ‘short-term’ rewards.
Alternatively, students may wish to save their stamps and if they have not spent a day in isolation, had an exclusion or Head of School’s detention during the year, they will be eligible to go on one of the annual school trips in September. Positive pupil performance will also be rewarded through: Subject and form tutor postcards Trips and tickets Positive phone calls home Annual Awards Ceremonies
Positive Discipline
17
Learning to be Resilient at Rodillian With resilience, students will see challenges where others see obstacles, they will seek knowledge instead of seeking ‘help‘ and they will see failure as a part of the learning journey rather than the end of one. Resilience is going to be a key aspect of students’ development in Key Stage 3 and beyond.
Resilience Activities
This year, there are going to be two very significant, compulsory activities that have been designed to develop resilience in the young people joining us in Year 7. 1. The Induction Programme—TBC The Year 6 cohort will be engaged in a variety of resilience activities that will stretch them and challenge them to keep on trying. 2. The Rodillian Resilience Camp-TBC
The first among equals
18
Our expectations
Behaviour Policy The Rodillian Academy has built its recognised success upon the foundations of firm and effective management of behaviour. Our most recent Ofsted report (2016), graded discipline and behaviour as ‘Outstanding’. We do not and will not tolerate behaviour that disrupts learning. Please read the following information very carefully.
Around the Academy Rules
Be polite and show respect for other people.
Do as you are told by all staff – first time, every time.
Wear your academy uniform correctly at all times. This is your academy; look after it. Look after property and put all litter in bins.
Eat and drink in the right place at the right time.
Walk around the academy sensibly & quietly and keep to the left.
Classroom Rules
Arrive on time, fully equipped and ready to work for each lesson.
10 second protocol to silently prepare for work.
Do as you are told by all staff—first time, every time.
Listen carefully when the teacher or another person is talking. Put your hand up and wait for permission to speak.
Always try your best without disturbing others.
Stand in silence at the end of lessons until you are dismissed.
Always do your homework properly and hand it in on time.
Further details of the academy’s expectations of behaviour are listed in greater detail in the student planner and on the academy website. By following these rules students will be equipped and prepared to learn and allow others to learn and teachers to teach. These rules also govern the way we should all behave in the academy between lessons and at breaks and lunchtime. We believe that students who maintain these rules will be able to work together for success and can be rewarded accordingly. When students misbehave they can expect escalating consequences from a verbal warning to a detention. Repeated misbehaviour which disrupts the learning of others will lead to removal from lessons and time in isolation. Certain behaviour will never be acceptable and will result in a fixed-term-expulsion. These include: Verbal abuse, violent behaviour, intentional damage/vandalism to property or buildings, repeated defiance. There are some rare but very serious incidents where the Head of School will always consider permanent expulsion. These are: Aggravated violence, deliberately setting-off the fire alarm, possession of illegal substances, knives, actions which endanger the health and safety of the school community, assaults against staff.
Positive Discipline
19
Consequences
Most young people need clear guidelines in terms of what is considered to be acceptable behaviour. We have written a clear set of classroom and around school rules. These rules can be found in the student planner. At times we have to accept that people will not behave or work in an acceptable manner. Please take time to read and consider: When misbehaviour is minor, a ‘verbal warning’ will be given.
If misbehaviour is more serious or continues after a verbal warning has been issued,
a written comment will be put into the student planner.
3 negative written comments in a subject or around school per half term will result
in a school detention.
Failure to attend a detention will lead to a Headteacher’s detention. Continued
missed detentions will result in isolation.
8 negative comments within a single week will lead to a Headteacher’s detention.
A missed Headteacher’s detention will result in isolation.
12 negative comments within in a single week will lead to a isolation.
Any student who is particularly disruptive and/or refuses to follow the
classroom or around school rules will be given 10 seconds to cooperate and if not
will be removed to internal isolation for a period of time.
If a student continues to disrupt the learning of others a fixed term of
expulsion from school will be considered.
Students failing to complete the required work set during their expulsion, will spend
a period of time in internal isolation. In isolation there will be a bank of work
covering all areas of the curriculum and the quality of work produced by each
student will be monitored closely.
Students who are rude to a member of staff, or are defiant (refuse to do what they
have been asked), will be placed in isolation or expelled from school.
We expect that these sanctions will apply to very few students and the great majority will be working hard at school and enjoying receiving the rewards and benefits that go with such an approach.
Positive Discipline
20
ICT Policy
To have access to the Internet students must follow the following rules; Students must not share their password with anyone else.
Students must not download anything that is sexist, racist, indecent or abusive.
Students must not download any screen saver, program or game without permission
from an authorised person.
Students must not do anything that may damage or harm the school ICT system.
Students should only use sites and materials that are appropriate to their
schoolwork.
Students are responsible for any e-mail they send and for contacts made which may
result in e-mails being received.
Students must not send anonymous messages or forward chain letters.
Students must respect rules regarding the copyright of materials.
Students must not purchase anything over the Internet
Students must not use the Internet to make money, for a political reason or for
advertising.
All Internet use is monitored and reported to the Headteacher.
Failure to comply with the rules could result in removal of all Network rights, and
you will be charged for any malicious or deliberate damages to equipment.
Rules about mobile phones
We recognise that mobile phones may be necessary before and after school for some of our students, but students must have phones turned off and in their bags from the moment they enter the school building until the end of the school day. All contact with and by students during the school day, should be made through the school switchboard – 01924 872252.
If a mobile phone is seen or heard it will be confiscated (with SIM card) and returned at the end of the school week i.e. Friday at 2.30pm.
Other Expectations
21
Attendance at parents’ evenings Parents’ evenings are the most important communication opportunities that we have and as such, attendance at them is very important. Parents’ evenings at Rodillian have been arranged in a way that makes them as accessible as possible, running from 4:30pm to 7:30pm. As such, attendance at parents’ evenings for Year 7 parents, is compulsory. If you fail to attend a parents’ evening, you will be contacted by a member of the academy’s leadership team to discuss their progress. Any meetings that are arranged as a result of non-attendance, will be arranged at the convenience of the academy.
Commitment to extra-curricular activities and groups
An opportunity to represent the Rodillian Academy in any activity or event, is something to be extremely proud of. Team success is built upon commitment. If your child is selected and agrees to participate in any team/s, bands, or other commitment-based activity, we expect that they will attend all additional training/practice sessions, rehearsals, fixtures and performances. (Occasionally, some fixtures may occur at the weekend). Students whose behaviour in school is not acceptable, will not be available for selection for these teams or groups.
Other Expectations
22
Attendance to school May we take this opportunity to make you aware of our attendance expectations here at Rodillian Academy:
It is your responsibility to ensure your child attends the academy regularly and on time. All students should strive for 100% attendance at all times: attendance should not drop below the school target
set for this academic year of 98%. All requests for holidays in term-time will be unauthorised and may result in a Fine being issued by the Local Authori-
ty. A form to request holidays and/or absence for exceptional circumstances is available from Student Services or the school website. Please check our Attendance Policy on our website for guidance on absence in term-time.
If your child feels ill in the morning, please provide them with appropriate pain relief/medication and send them
to school. Any medication that needs to be taken in school should be handed into Student Services and can only be administered if the appropriate permission form is completed. Your child should be in school if they have minor illness such as a headache, cold, sore throat or period pains.
If your child is ill i.e. to the extent that they cannot get out of bed, then please ring, where possible, before 0830,
to comply with safeguarding guidelines. Please notify the attendance team on 0924 874762 and advise them of the reason for absence and the expected date of return. Please also ensure that telephone contact numbers are available and if changed, the academy is informed immediately.
On occasions throughout the week members of the attendance team and other school staff may visit any child
who is absent from school. If your child is well enough to attend lessons, then the member of staff may accompany them back to school.
If your child is absent from school for 4 days or less, please provide a written note in their planner. On their re-
turn to school pupils will be asked for the note by their form tutor, failure to provide a note will result in a written comment in their planner and persistent failure to provide a note may result in your child being placed in isolation.
If your child is absent from school for 5 days or longer please provide medical evidence i.e. an appointment card,
indicating the reason for absence.

Travel Plan
Now that your son/daughter may be travelling to school on their own for the first time, it is important that they know how they are getting to school, and also, what alternative travel arrangements they have in place if their usual means of getting to school is not available. Students must have an alternative means of getting to school, for instance if they miss the school bus or have had an appointment during the day. Rodillian Academy will only authorise a half day for any appointments so students must be able to get to school for the other half. Using the Travel Plan below, please complete this with your child so they know what their travel plans are.
Student Name: ………………………. Form: ………….
PLAN A HOW WILL I GET TO SCHOOL? Bus………………... What number bus…………….. Where ……………. Walk….... Car………. Bike……...
PLAN B HOW WILL I GET TO SCHOOL IF:- I miss the bus ………………………………………………………. My lift isn’t available……………………………………… My bike is not roadworthy……………………………… After a medical appointment…………………………… Bad weather…………………………………………………………
What will be my route? What number bus will I catch? How much money will I need? Please note that ALL students will need a half fare bus pass for any bus service.

WELCOME – YOU ARE NOW A MEMBER OF FRIENDS OF RODILLIAN!
WHO WE ARE: A registered charity made up of parents, grandparents, carers and teachers who volunteer their time – very much like your primary school PTA. We are always happy to see new faces at our meetings and accept an extra pair of hands at any of the events, the level of involvement is up to you. WHAT WE DO: We organise events for pupils and the wider community to get involved in, some of which raise money, others simply for fun. We currently raise around £9000 a year and have made recent donations towards the Leavers Prom, a 3D printer, Year 7 Boot Camp, DofE Equipment, Mobile phones for IT, books and ‘accelerated reader’ incentives and setting up of a boxing academy. We hope to raise more in the forthcoming years to make con-tributions towards trips, etc – but we need more help to do this. WHY: To add the Xtrafactor. Extra equipment, extra events and extra support, wrapped up in a friendly, relaxed group. WHEN: Meeting dates, event dates and requests for help are posted on our Facebook page. UP-COMING EVENTS: July – Year7/8 Hawaiian disco from 6-8pm July (Last Friday of Term) – Sports Day Refreshments from 9-12noon October – Year 7/8 Halloween disco from 6-8pm December – Craft Fayre from 10am-2pm February – Spring Disco We also provide refreshments at Parent’s evenings and concerts. We sincerely hope you would like to get involved and be kept informed of upcoming events, please complete the details below and hand in to the Friends of Rodillian stall on 6th June or pass to Mrs C Needham in School.
