MOVING FROM YEAR 2 TO 3Transition Meeting for parents

Year 3 Expectations: Expected to be more independent. Tour of Upper School on first day. Travel round school individually – not in pairs. Going to the toilet encouraged at break and

lunchtime, rather than during lessons (but during lessons will be allowed)

School rules apply as in the Lower School but with increased expectations.

Children are expected to move around the school silently at all times, including going up and down the stairs.

Same behaviour thermometer applies.

•Stationery such as pencils, pens, coloured pencils no longer provided by school.

•Please provide a school bag (book bag or rucksack) with: pencil case / ruler / pencils / rubbers etc. Equipment list provided. •Pen licence – then will need a blue handwriting pen.

Equipment

Uniform•Expectations for uniform stay the same. See uniform list.•PE kit also remains the same. Trainers – outdoor, plimsolls – indoor. Dark tracksuit for cold weather. Micropore tape to cover religious jewellery. •Stud earrings only - should be removed for PE.•Every item of clothing, bag, lunchbox etc must be named.

As in Year 2, children will be in sets for phonics/spelling work.

In class they will be in ability groups for maths and English, and in mixed ability groups for other subjects. These are likely to change frequently. Work is differentiated according to ability.

Quantity of work expected in a lesson will increase.

Homework will be peer marked under the class teacher’s direction.

Homework diary – must be signed weekly by parent. Parents can give your feedback in diary.

If homework or reading records not completed/returned on time, detention during morning break.

Behaviour Work: quality, quantity, attention to

detail

Same houses – house points for good work/behaviour

Same Behaviour Thermometer used Yellow/Red card system – disruptive or

harmful behaviour – red card means detention during playtime

Music lessons

Children must check timetable on music board to see when weekly music lesson is

Child’s responsibility to know time of lesson and to bring their instrument

Music lesson times rotated weekly so children don’t miss same lesson each week

General Fruit no longer provided – children can bring own

healthy snack for morning break, eg yoghurt or fruit Children can continue to have hot lunches.

However, from Year 3 upwards, unless you have applied for and receive free school meals for your child, these now have to be paid for. Please ensure your child’s hot lunch account has sufficient funds

School day in Upper School ends at 3.25pm, collect from main playground near Dukes Avenue entrance.

If child going home with an adult other than a parent please send a note, write in the homework diary or ring reception office.

Current Year 2 teachers have shared information with new Year 3 teachers so aware of your child’s needs.

General•If you wish to see your child’s class teacher, then you are able to speak to her at the end of the day once she has dismissed the whole class.•If you need to get a message to the teacher urgently, either give a written message to your child to pass on, or ring or drop a note into the school office.•You can also ring and speak to Welfare if appropriate.•If you have seen the class teacher and still need further help, please ask for a meeting with the Year 3 Leader – Miss Harris, or the Key Stage Leader – Mrs Searle . Either ask the class teacher to arrange a meeting or contact the office who will arrange it for you.

•There will be a termly parent drop-in with the Year 3 teachers so you can ask any general questions about Year 3 and find out a little more about the curriculum.
