Activation of Safe Harbors Green As an ever growing, ever evolving organization, there is typically a stand out event, program or project that defines the year at Safe Harbors. This year, that stand out was the activation of Safe Harbors Green.

Though it officially opened in 2017, over the past year, the Green has come alive! Alive with spontaneous community vigils; concerts, Salsa and dance. It has been host to Zip Zap Circus, and had community members soaring over its gardens on a flying trapeze. Tito Puente, Jr. brought his famous Latin sounds to the

park for hundreds of dancing fans. The City of Newburgh presented its summer film series on its lawn; we honored the Queen of Soul with a tribute concert in memory of Aretha Franklin; and local artist Judy Thomas was inspired to create a site specific work which was installed on the Green for the Newburgh Open Studio Tour. There are benches which invite neighbors to sit and enjoy the peace and quiet of the space, the ever changing colors in the gardens and the monarch butterflies descending en masse in late August.

Winter is upon us, so the park will go quiet for a while, but in the spring, watch for the buds and the greening grass; rest on a sun-warmed bench; or bring a chair to enjoy a concert, dance performance or an event the community will dream up that we haven’t even thought of yet!

In the pages of this newsletter, you will see the many ways Safe Harbors is transforming lives and building community through housing and the arts. We thank you for your support and hope to see you around the building soon!

Remembering Judy Kennedy Newburgh lost its greatest cheerleader and champion when it lost Mayor Judy Kennedy in April, after her long battle with ovarian cancer. Mayor Kennedy, Safe Harbors 2014 Cornerstone of the Community Award recipient, typified the spirit of that award by giving tirelessly of her time and talent to make Newburgh a healthy, strong community for all its residents. She welcomed newcomers, encouraged unity and collaboration, supported local businesses and was a fierce advocate for the City in Goshen and Albany. Mayor Kennedy was a pragmatic, visionary leader who brimmed with hope and enthusiasm for her adopted hometown. RIP Mayor Kennedy, you are missed.

Cornerstone Education - Thanks to our partner SUNY Orange, the Cornerstone GED program enters its 12th year with 27 graduates to date! In 2018 we expanded that partnership to include a college prep class, from which 6 students have begun their college journey.

Entrepreneurship - The Cornerstone Collective is going strong! With support from Tenant Services, entrepreneurial members of the Cornerstone community are successfully selling their work at local fairs, festivals and events. Get out the Vote! Safe Harbors provides support and encouragement to our residents to register to vote and to get involved and informed on the issues that affect their lives and their community. Many Cornerstone residents attended a Disabilities Services and Support rally in Albany and had the opportunity to discuss these important issues with their elected officials. Volunteerism and Employment - Community volunteerism, both in the Cornerstone and in the local community, is at an all-time high. Vocationally, Safe Harbors has increased the number of residents working on-site and continues to offer support and opportunities for employment in the local community.

Health and Wellness - Cornerstone Fitness, which includes Zumba, Pilates, Open Movement dance, DYBO and Tai Chi, continues to thrive, with residents working out alongside their community neighbors. A newly formed walking club has residents enjoying the City of Newburgh while staying fit. Flu shots were offered to all staff and residents in the building; and we invited a guest from the Alzheimer’s Association to speak to our residents about the disease.

Outings, Experiences and Events - The Cornerstone Community continues to flourish with a variety of events, activities and access to the arts. An ever growing Vet-to-Vet program provides opportunities for our veterans to participate in music, writing, art and performance. All residents are invited to enjoy our many performancs, visual arts events, programs and on-going classes and cultural celebrations.

Resident Spotlight Anthony Moorer grew up in NYC and went to college where he studied both visual and music arts. Mr. Moorer, a veteran of the armed services, has had many hurdles to overcome, but a great attitude has helped him to deal with them head on. Once he moved to Newburgh, Anthony got involved right away, cultivating a wide variety of like-minded friends and creating a support system for himself in the community.

Anthony has a myriad of interests and skills and always finds ways to marry the two. He is an avid motorcyclist and a ‘professional’ amateur photographer and videographer. Anthony is an accomplished musician who enjoys jamming with other musicians including his fellow vets in the Cornerstone’s Vet2Vet group.

Anthony has a huge love of the outdoors and devotion to taking photographs of the local landscape. Overcoming what he believed to be a huge obstacle, Anthony finally got his driver’s license. With this newfound freedom, he is able to take jobs outside the area and visit other parts of the Hudson Valley.

A Year of Timely and Thought-Provoking ExhibitionsThe celebration of fall ushers in cooler weather and a more colorful palette in nature. Here at the Ann Street Gallery we celebrated fall with our last exhibition of the season Forget Me Not. This exhibition was an exploration of art produced by three generations of American veteran-artists, to mark the centenary of Armistice Day and in honor of Veterans Day. Visitors gained an in-depth look into the ways these artists utilized the art-making processes to attain personal goals, ranging from using art for its ability to heal; to the chronicling and communicating of complex veteran experiences; to the usage of art as a platform for bringing a fresh perspective to who they are as individuals; and the development of a personal creative practice unrelated to service or military culture.

Earlier in the year, the gallery presented a timely exhibition entitled ANTHROPOCENE. This exhibition drew attention to the impact of the changing climate and its devastating results on our environment, while acknowledging that humans are the dominant force of this global catastrophe and the Earth’s current transformation.

In conjunction with this exhibition, we had the good fortune to have Melissa Fleming, author and creator of The Weather Gamut blog, present a gallery talk. To a full house, Ms. Fleming discussed the basic science of climate change and how artists from around the globe are reacting to its impact with possible solutions. To our great delight, the works in the Anthropocene exhibition were selected for an eight-page feature article in the Spring issue of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine magazine!

On a more local level, the Vista Panorámica exhibition offered visitors an alternative view of the artistic practices Hudson Valley Latino artists are making within contemporary art. The exhibition captured the diverse ways these artists are working today, not confined to one style of aesthetic production, but offering a panoramic view of modes of creating which challenged audiences’ expectations of Latino art while highlighting their contribution to American culture.

Our exhibitions and programs work to connect art to audiences locally, across our region and beyond. If you have not already visited the gallery or attended one of our exhibitions, we hope to see you soon!

Blues on Broadway Thank you to talented producer/promoter Joe Mack for bringing performance greats Big Joe Fitz, Slam Allen, Willa Vincitore, Murali Coryell, Bruce Katz and Jeremy Baum to the Lobby stage for our Blues on Broadway concert series. Thanks to our friends at The Wherehouse for partnering with us to provide delicious vittles for our audiences. Partnership and collaborations strengthen our programming and increase our impact on the community.

Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival (HVSF) Safe Harbors continues our partnership with the HVSF and was thrilled to host a series of community workshops and the set design and fabrication for the HVSF 2018 Full Circle Summer production of Rip Van Winkle.

Dance, dance, dance The Lobby was the venue for Mise-en-Dance and Small Plates – a choreography festival featuring a series of interactive creations and performances produced by Beth Elliot of Haven Movement Company. This year, that program expanded to include a Young Choreograpahers Workshop, further engaging our young neighbors in the transformative impact of the arts.

Newburgh Open Movement, produced by Ophra Wolf, of Force and Flow, continues to encourage people from all walks of life to come together for playful dancing and mindful movement accompanied by world-class musicians, held in the Lobby at the Ritz on select Saturdays throughout the year. 2019 Looking Ahead

Thank you to our sponsors for their continued support of the Lobby at the Ritz Performance Series.

Following the success of our open air performances, Safe Harbors is planning more outdoor concerts and events in 2019.

Celebrating the Disco craze, in February we will host a Disco dance, complete with Jeff Selby teaching his internationally-known New Style Hustle class, live music and a dessert reception.

Alan Douches of West West Side Music will be collaborating with Safe Harbors to create an internship program for students in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District (NECSD) and other school districts for sound production and podcasts.

Ritz Kidz is working with the NECSD and the Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra to create a musical appreciation program for upper-elementary and middle school students we hope to launch in 2019.

We will continue to expand our programming to celebrate the diversity that is the City of Newburgh. Salsa Under the Stars was a huge success in 2018 with audiences ranging from 400 to 600 people. Starting in January 2019, we will present a complete arts experience by offering educational arts programming highlighting the indigenous dances, music and art/handicrafts of Latin American countries.

In 2018, we presented a Black History celebration with and for our youth. On February 24, we will expand and explore Black History and its cultural impact on the world with activities for all ages.

We are excited to announce that Safe Harbors, Washington’s Headquarters and the NECSD have received a grant for The Washington Project: History Comes Alive, a collaborative program which will engage students in the research, exploration and retelling of the historic events that took place in Newburgh at the end of the Revolutionary War. The student-created work will be performed on February 15-17 at Washington’s Headquarters with more performances to follow.

Ritz Kidz Children’s Theater WorkshopAspiring thespians worked with teachers from the NECSD at Ritz Kidz two-week Children’s Theater Workshop where they wrote, directed, designed and starred in their own original works!

Ritz Kidz Zip Zap Summer Circus ProgramCommunity support for the Zip Zap Circus Arts Program has been overwhelming! In its second year, 25 area students between the ages of 12 and 16 spent two weeks immersed in the world of circus arts with an amazing coaching team. Circus students learn confidence, self-reliance and team work while juggling, miming, clowning, tight rope walking and flying high on a trapeze!

On a rainy August day, the weather cleared just in time for the culminating community performance which entertained a crowd of over 400 friends, neighbors and family members. This year, Trapeze Workshops were opened to our community as a unique opportunity and fundraising effort to help fund the circus program.

El Aire de NewburghSalsa Under the Stars inspired our young friends to create a band of their own! Ritz Kidz welcomes El Aire de Newburgh, youth Salsa band.
