The 14h Sunday in Ordinary Time July 5, 2020
From the Desk of Deacon Chris…
ONE NATION UNDER GOD
This weekend, our nation celebrates its
Independence Day, and my thoughts
turned to a pledge I believe we all learned
in elementary school. I know I learned it
then, because my class recited the “Pledge
of Allegiance” every morning as we stood
with our hands over our hearts. Allow me
to remind everyone of the words, “I pledge
allegiance to the Flag of the United States
of America, and to the Republic for which
it stands, one Nation under God, indivisi-
ble, with liberty and justice for all.”
I worry that this pledge has less mean-
ing today than it did when I was an ele-
mentary student. In this day and age, do
the words, “One Nation under God” still
have the same importance they once had?
Over the years, the separation of Church
and State seems to have become wider and
wider to the extent that the Laws of God,
the Ten Commandments, play a secondary
role of importance in our society and na-
tion.
Perhaps we should all take some time to
reflect on just what we celebrate every
Fourth of July. We celebrate our nation’s
independence and freedom from rule and
oppression. We claim to be the land of the
free, but do our civil laws and actions sup-
port that claim? As we look at the amount
of violence, social unrest, racial and gender
inequality, and lack of social morals and
compassion, the answer seems to me that
we need to become, “One Nation under
God,” now more than ever!
What is the single most important thing
we can do as individuals, and a nation, to
proudly claim to be, “Indivisible, with lib-
erty and justice for all?” The answer has
to be God! All of the wonderful conditions
we hope to achieve can only be done
through a loving relationship with Al-
mighty God! Since the beginning of crea-
tion, God has established a covenant with
His people. God has never abandoned the
covenant He made with His creation.
Throughout history, God’s people have abandoned their
covenant with God by seeking their own selfish desires.
God even sent us His only begotten Son, Jesus, who suf-
fered and died for our sins, and established a new and ev-
erlasting covenant of life. We should always remember
that our life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness are given us
by the grace of God. It is only in Jesus Christ that we can
find true happiness and peace, as individuals, and as a na-
tion!
On this Independence Day weekend, please pray for our
nation. Pray that the United States becomes all that we
profess to be in our Pledge of Allegiance. May our words,
and actions, show that we are, “One Nation under God,
indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” God bless.
Deacon Chris
