student population.

• Fall Semester 2017, we welcomed

TRANSFER POPULATION

1. Most transfer students are continuing on from an associate degree at local community

colleges. Our largest number of transfers comes from St. Charles Community

College.

2. Local students who are returning from larger state schools

• Why do they return?

• Save on cost by becoming a commuter student

• Ability to get into their desired degree program – less competition than larger schools.

• Availability of academic assistance ( tutors, writing center, more interaction w/ faculty)

• Smaller class size (maximum 35 student/class)

3. Adult continuing education – Accelerated Degree Program12

TRANSFER STUDENT SERVICES

TRANSFER STUDENT SERVICES

Transfer Student Advising1) A temporary advisor in each school sets the transfer student schedule for the

first semester.

2) A permanent advisor in the major field is assigned during the first semester

3) Advisors are faculty members

a) Pros? Advisors can be your instructor in class. A stronger relationship

between students and faculty. highly informed in terms of major degree

requirements.

b) Cons? Less time to devote to advising due to teaching load and other

administrative responsibilities. Some faculty members are strong

instructors, but not strong advisors 14

Why Lindenwood? Best Practices

1) We offer transfer student scholarships, whereas

many schools do not.

2) We offer merit awards. This rewards students

with a 2.5 or higher GPA. This changed from the

16/17 Academic Year, when 3.0 was the

minimum

3) We’ve updated the scholarship matrix to award

the same amount to commuter students (70% of

transfer students are commuters)

4) We are very flexible with transfer credits,

especially general education classes. Students

want to receive credit for their previous efforts.

TRANSFER STUDENT SERVICES

Challenges & Setbacks

1) We don’t transfer in associate degrees

2) Getting transfer credits to fulfill major requirements

3) Streamlining the transfer process to get credits posted

faster and equivalencies set in a timely manner. Transition

to a new SIS may help with this process.16

students, with 11,704 undergraduates

• On average, 54.5% of every incoming

TRANSFER SERVICES & SUPPORT MODEL

Primary Challenge - Decentralized Staffing & Support

• Central Administration

• Transfer & Articulation Officer + One Transfer Recruiter

• Academic Units

• Variety of recruitment, advising, and transcript evaluation

services offered

• Not consistent from AU to AU

18

Page 19: TRANSFER SERVICES ROUNDTABLE · Why Lindenwood? Best Practices 1) We offer transfer student scholarships, whereas many schools do not. 2) We offer merit awards. This rewards students

TRANSFER SERVICE IMPROVEMENT

Long Term Goals (aka the Pipe Dream)

• Required Transfer Student Orientation (foreseeable future)

• House TAO, Reverse Transfer Coordinator, & Transfer Recruiters in

a single shared space

• Develop a consistent and formalized unofficial transfer review

service provided by the Transfer Services Team.
