When you’ve been in business for a while, you get to know what works and what doesn’t. As far as equipment goes, you want something that delivers on the road, under the hood and in the books.

“People don’t want to hear excuses like ‘the truck broke down again.’ That’s why, every few years, we turn over our entire fleet,” says Londino. “When our local trucks are running an average of 200 miles a day and our over-the-road trucks are running about 450 miles a day, it adds up. We’ve found if we keep our equipment any longer than three or four years, we witness a lot more breakdowns. We can’t afford those losses and neither can our customers.”

This was one of those years: In June, AGX purchased 35 new Hino straight trucks from TransEdge Truck Centers in Pittsburgh. AGX began its partnership with the dealership more than 15 years ago, when it was operating as Pittsburgh Mack. What keeps AGX coming back, however, is not the history. It’s the consistent customer service.

“Dave Stahl and Ed Stankovic really know what they’re doing,” Londino says. “They have a great product, they know it inside and out and they deliver on their promises – every time. And that’s all we need.”

It’s easy to do – you’re in line at the grocery store and you buy a candy bar. It wasn’t on the list, but it sure looked good at the moment. Nowadays, these impulse buys don’t just happen in line. They happen online.

With smartphones and tablets, consumers spend even more time browsing the Internet, shopping while waiting for an appointment or while watching T.V. Of course, that’s great news for the trucking industry, because nearly all of these goods will be transported in a truck at some point.

To get a piece of the action, trucking companies need a competitive edge. Some are finding that an extra boost to customer service is where it’s at.

“It’s very simple – if you don’t make the customer your top priority and deliver on your promises, people won’t give you their business,” says Dave Londino, general manager for Air Ground Xpress (AGX) an expedited trucking company headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

AGX has followed this golden rule since its founding in 1981 and, in doing so, has become the largest independent airfreight cartage com-pany in the area, serving Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio, and Northern West Virginia. Same day pickup and delivery, full truckload or LTL – regardless of the service being provided, AGX has found that keeping its 250 employees happy and its fleet of 150 trucks in excellent shape is critical to customer satisfaction.
