ThereasonIdidthatwasthatIknewthatifonlyIhad$10million,I'dbehappy.Thatwasmythinking.Thatisexactlyinalignmentwithwhatyou'resayingthere.It'saboutabundance,butmostpeople,especiallyifyou'reyoungerandalotofyouraudienceismillennialswithmindbodygreen,ifyou'reyounger,you'relike,"Okaythere'sallthisstuffIwant.Iwantfreedom.Itrequiresmoney."Whattheydon'tteachyouinschoolandanywhereisthat$75,000,that'sthepriceofhappiness.

Jason: Yep.WeallgetcaughtupinthisideaofkeepingupwiththeJones's,especiallyhereinNewYorkandI'msurewhereyouare,whereforsomepersonit's10,butonceyougetto10,wellthenextguy'sgot50.Lookatthehousehehas,orlookatthewife,orlookatwhateveritmaybe.Itbecomesverydangerousveryquickly.

Dave: It'soneofthereasonsIliveonVancouverIslandbecausehereweusuallycompetetoseewhetheryouroldbrokendownVolvowagonsmellsmorelikerawmilkthansomeoneelse's.Justkidding.IdoliveinahippyareawherekeepingupwiththeJones'sislessofanissue.Itravelathirdofthetime,andIhangoutwithallkindsofpeople.You'reright.Youcangetcaughtupinthat,"I'vegottohavethenewestTeslarightnow,"kindofthing.Itstressesyouout,andyou'rehappyforlikefiveminutesafteryougetit,andthenit'slike,"What'snext?"

Jason: I'llgiveyoumyquickbackground.Fast-forward,IwenttoColumbia,Iplayedbasketball,becameanequitiestrader.IbecameanequitiestraderbecauseIdidn'thavemoney.Backthen,thiswas1998,ifyouwantedtomakemoney,youdidthreethings:Youbecameadoctor,ifyouhadgradesandaptitudeforscience,youbecamealawyerifyouhadgradesforlawschool,andifyouhadnoneoftheabove,youwenttoworkonWallStreet.Ididn'thavegradesoranaptitudeforscience,soIbecameanequitiestrader.Mybestyear,mysecondyear,Imade$800,000.Iwasabletopayoffallmyschooldebt,wasabletobuymymotheracar.HereIthoughtthatwasalotofmoney.Iwasmiserable.Iwasmiserablebecausearelationshipwasfallingapart,andtalkaboutacontrast.HereIammywholeyoungadultlifelookingforthisthing,Ithinkit'sgoingtobringmehappinessandfreedom,andIwasmiserable.

Wentonthisjourney,becameanentrepreneur.Variousbusinesses,alotofthemdidn'twork,andfoundmyselfrunningastart-upaboutsevenoreightyearsago,flying150,000milesdomestic.Youcan'ttell,butI'm6'7",you'reabigguytooDave.

outofourmind.Twoextrudeddisksinmylowerbackpressingonmysciaticnerve,basketballinjurycombinedwithflyingandstress.Excruciatingsciaticainmyrightleg,Icouldn'twalk.Wenttoadoctor,hesaid,"Youneedsurgery,non-negotiable."Isoughtasecondopinion,andIhavenothingagainstsurgery,IjustsawitassomethingIgenerallydon'twanttodo.Backsurgery,thesuccessratesisn'tactuallythatgood.Hesaidthesamething,hesaid,"Youneedbacksurgery."Itwasalmostlikeanafterthought,hesaid,"Youknow,maybesomeyogaortherapymighthelp."Isaid,"Okay.I'lltrysomereallylightyoga."Startedtodoaboutfiveto10minutesinthemorningandtheevening.Istartedtofeelbetter,andstartedtolookatthingslikestressandsleepandnutritionandtheenvironment,andstartedtomakeallthesechangesinmylife.Overaboutsixmonths,Icompletelyhealed.Ineverhadbacksurgery,andI'mfine.

Dave: Wereyoustillanequitiestraderwhenyouweredoingthis?

Jason: Thatwasgone,Iwasrunninganotherstart-up,anorganicchocolatechipcookiecompanythatwasineveryWholeFoodsMarketinthecountry.200WholeFoods,backinlike2008.Icompletelyhealed,andIstartedtogodownthisrabbithole.Iwaslike,"Holycow.Everyonehashealthwrong.Everyprintmagazineleadsyoutobelieveit'saboutvanityandweightloss,andtheInternetisdominatedbypeopleGooglingforsymptomsandfreakingout,runningtotheemergencyroom."Isaid,"It'smorenuanced,it'sEasternmeetsWestern.It'smoreholistic,it'sthisblendofonceagain,mental,physical,spiritual,emotional,environmentalwell-being.Noone'stalkingaboutthis."

That'showmindbodygreenlaunched,andourmissionistohelppeoplelivetheirbestlife.Wehaveapointofviewonthat.Wehaveapointofviewthat'snarrowandthatwebelieveit'sonceagainthisblend.Wealsoareopentowhateverworksforyou.Thatisourmission,that'swhatgetsmeupeveryday.It'sexciting.We'rechanginglives.Thereisamediacompany,there'salwaysbettercontent,morecontent,morethingswecanoffer.That'swhatkeepsmegoingandgetsmeexcitedeverydaytocometowork.

Jason: Yeah,everymorning.It'sthisideaofbuildingalifeandlookingatyourlifeholistically.Tome,beinghealthyisacombinationofmultiplethings.Itgoesbeyonddiet,althoughIthinkdietplaysahugerole.Ifyou'renothappyinyourrelationship,ifyou'renothappywithfriendships,ifyou'renotconnectingtonature,Ithinkallthesethingsareinterconnected.Reallywantedtodiveintoeachelementofhealthandwellness,whichIthinkarevital,andI'veexperiencedthatinmyownpersonallife.

Jason: Sure.IthinkthebackpainactuallyprobablystartedincollegewhenIwasplayinginmyjunioryearwhenIstartedtohaveweirdhamstringpain.Whenyoudon't,everythingisthelowerback,somethingIdidn'trealizeatthetime.Thenthepainstartedtoreoccurtowardsmybutt.Thenitjustwentfurtherandfurthersouthtomytoesandmylegwasalightningrod.Atthetime,surgeryseemedlikeitwasaseriousoptionthatIwaswillingtoconsider,butsawitasalastresort.Isawyogaasthisthingwhereheyitmightwork.I'llgiveitashot.Ifitdoesn'twork,I'llgetsurgery.I'llbefine.Rightaway,mentallyI'mstartingtothink,"Nomatterwhathappens,I'mnotgoingtobeacripple.I'mgoingtobeokay,"whichinretrospectIthinkwasverypowerfulinthishealingprocess,thisideaoflettinggoandbeingpositive,andthere'ssciencetosupportthat.

Jason: Wellsobeinganequitiestrader,therewasalotofentrepreneurialspiritthere.IhadmyownPNL,therewasalotoffreedom.Iendedupleavingandtradingmyownmoney.Therewasalotoffreedomthere.Partofitwas,thereweremomentsintimewhereIthoughtaboutgoingbacktothe"establishment."Ijustcouldn'tgetajob.Insomewayswasanaccidentalentrepreneur,andstartedtogainexperience,firstitwasinhealthcare,andthenconsumerproducts,andthatgotmeintowellness.ThenwhenIgottomedia,itsortofstartedatscratch.Look,ittookthreeorfouryearsbeforeIthoughtmindbodygreenhadachanceatbeingsuccessful.IthinkpartofthatreasonisIdidn'thaveexperienceinmedia,probablywouldhavehappenedalotfaster.IthoughtIwassmart,I'llworkmyassoff.I'mpassionate,I'llfigureitout.Sureenough,Idid.I'msureluckplayedaroleinit.

Ibelieveinexperience.Ibelieveinreal-worldexperience,alotofthestufftheycan'tteachyouinschool,whetheryougotoHarvardBusinessSchoolorwhathaveyou.Havingmentors,havingreal-worldexperienceisinvaluable.That'ssomethingI'vegained,andit'sstillsomethingI'mworkingon.IhaveagreatmentornowI'mworkingwith,andIknowIdon'thaveallthesecrets.That'simportant.Ithinkthemomentyoustopseekingtobebetterasanentrepreneur,asaperson,inlifeandinbusinessissortofwhenthemusicstopsandit'sover.

Dave: Yeah.It'sverywellsaid.I'mthinkingbackoneofmyveryfirstcompanies,itturnsoutwasthefirstcompanytoeverdoE-commerce.IsoldacaffeineT-shirtoutofmydormroomoversomethingcalledUsenetbeforetheworldwidewebwasinvented.Itturnsout,that'skindofagroundbreakingthing.Isoldtheseshirtstoadozencountriesanditwasbornoutofdesperationbecausetheyraisedtuition.Itturnsoutitwasby900%.IwentbackandIdidthemath.Iusedtothinkitwas1500%.I'mlike,"Ican'taffordthis.Mysummerjobdoesn'tpayformycollegeanymore,soI'mgoingtostartthisthing."Itworked.

IfIhadacceptedtheabundantoffersofhelpfromsuccessfulentrepreneurs,IwouldhaveprobablygonetoSiliconValleyandstartedsomeVistaprintorsomesortofamazingcompany.Ididn'tdothatbecauseIwasactuallytoostubbornandangrytotakeonmentorship.Forpeoplelisteningtothis,it'slike“justgooutanddoitonyourown,”isprobablynotagoodstrategy.Gooutandfindsomeonewhojustabsolutelykicksassatdoingwhatyoulove,andoffertosweepthefloor.Youlearnmoredoingthatthanyouwilldoingityourselfandwalkingintothebuzzsawafewtimes.
