Training and hiring requirements met

Options abound for qualifi ed students

Statewide Institute of Training’s (SWITWA) new road transport course, the Certifi cate II in Driving Operations, is the fi rst of its kind being off ered in Australia.

The course provides licensing qualifi cations for truck, bus and taxidriving, with the addition of motorcycleand car licensing to be off ered in early next year.

After 13 years’ driving heavy vehicles, road trains and mining equipment,SWITWA Managing Director and ownerAlice Robb has worked hard to followher goal of providing quality training andmentoring in the transport industry.

“This has been 10 years in the making.Everything I learnt in the industry as anoperator I have put into this course,” she said.

“It’s the fi rst time in Australia you can go somewhere and learn not just how to be a truck, taxi or bus driver, but learn how to be an operator and perform on the job, instead of just getting a licence and going into something blind.

“One of the biggest downfalls whenpeople get a licence is they go into a job and get knocked back because they don’t have experience.

“So that’s what we off er here, experience.”

Registered training organisation (RTO) Choice Industrial Training has secured funding from the Department of Training and Workforce Development (DTWD) to introduce a Diploma of Engineering, a priority industry qualifi cation under Future Skills WA.

“We’ve been awarded funding to train job seekers, youth at risk and ex-off enders for a Certifi cate II in Engineering,” Chief Executive Offi cer Brendan Munn said.

“This course provides job readiness skills and is a great one to have to get a foot into the industry.”

Choice now has 31 qualifi cations, 52 units of competency and one accredited course on its scope, with more to come.

Mr Munn said the centre’s fl exibility and cost had been

highlighted by students as the initial attraction.

“Our quality of training and experienced staff have encouraged them to come for further education through us,” he said.

Choice recently moved premises to accommodate growing demand from students. The premises runs evening classes and holds a 9B building classifi cation as a public training facility.

Choice Industrial is a pioneer of industry demanded courses such as the Miner’s Start Pack, covering the essential qualifi cation and tickets needed to get into the mining industry.

Choice Industrial is also approved by the Welding Technology Institute of Australia to deliver courses in Perth.

Singleton resident Emily Logan recently enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) as an electronics technician.

The 21-year-old was one of 112 men and women across Australia to be sworn into the navy recently and will start her training at HMAS Cerberus in Victoria.

“I wanted to join the navy because it seemed like a career with experiences on off er unlike anything else and with the opportunity to learn,” Ms Logan said.

In preparation for her training, Ms Logan upped her fi tness training regime, including increasing her push-up and sit-up repetitions and running 2.5km every day.

As an electronics technician, Ms Logan will be involved in the maintenance, repair and operation of a variety of electronic systems associated with the ship’s guns, missiles, radar, sonar, navigation and combat data systems.

“I’m excited to gain a variety of skills. I’m looking forward to progressing through the ranks and gaining the pride that comes with being a member of the Royal Australian Navy,” she said.

The enlistment ceremony marked the offi cial moment Ms Logan became a member of the Australian Defence Force.

Sailing on to success

It is a proud moment she will no doubt remember throughout her career.

“This is an exciting step towards my life goals. I’m proud of myself for getting this far and so is my family. I’m keeping an open mind and am full of determination,” she said.

Honour, honesty, courage, integrity and loyalty are the guiding principles that

form the Royal Australian Navy’s code of values, which serve as a constant source of moral courage to take action.

The navy is currently recruiting for electronics technicians.

From owner to chefPolytechnic West qualifi cations are designed to provide a pathway of skill building.

Managing Director Jill Jamieson said these pathways provided the skills needed to gain great jobs or move on to higher level qualifi cations. Many students also enter degree-level study with Polytechnic West or one of its partnering universities through the alternative entry pathways.

“Once a qualifi cation is completed, another awaits to allow students to build on the knowledge and skills acquired,” Ms Jamieson said.

“The same course progression applies whether undertaking an apprenticeship, learning how to develop video games and computer software, studying business and fi nance or engaging in almost any of Polytechnic West’s vast array of study areas. Students learn the fundamentals of an area and advance on to increasingly complex and specialised skill sets.”

The system also caters for those already working in their industry. Qualifi cations are designed to accommodate an individual’s

desire to upskill after some time away from the classroom. It could be one year, fi ve, 10 or even more, but it is never too late to make the decision to upgrade your skills and learn something new.

Similarly, it is never too late to make a fresh start and follow something new that you love doing. In fact, WA’s current Apprentice of the Year Geoff Franklin started his cookery apprenticeship with Polytechnic West as a mature age student.

His previous adventures include completing a horticulture apprenticeship and owning a fi sh and chip shop, but eventually he came to the realisation commercial cookery was the career he wanted to pursue.

“I am very fortunate to be part of a system that allows people to change careers and learn new skills later in life,” he said.

“I am now deeply engaged in a career that I love and working for my dream employer in Crown Perth, thanks to a system that encourages and rewards people using their initiative to chase a job they love.”
