EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION ‐ improving, maximising & accelerating individual & organisational performance
Language | Communication | Culture
Finns have few equals in their knowledge of English as a foreign language. Since the
1950s, when Richard D. Lewis started operating here, there have been great advances in
the ability of Finnish businessmen and women in English and other languages.
However, communication is not just knowledge of a language. It is also the skill of per‐
suasively stating your case, the clarity and impact of your message, of making your voice
heard above the other nationalities claiming their market share, or their say in policy. This
goes against the grain of typical Finnish communication style, which is reticent, modest
and more Asian than European.
Some examples of what a programme may include:
• A review of your language structure and typical errors
• Improvement of your fluency and confidence
• Vocabulary extension in your professional field
• Improvement in your ability to interact with audiences
• Writing emails that have the effect you want
• Social language to create the right climate for business
• Pronunciation and intonation practice with difficult words and phrases you
cannot avoid
• With institutions, branches and train‐
ers in four continents, Richard Lewis
Communications exists to develop,
nurture, motivate and take responsi‐
bility for each individual’s personal
development and skills – accelerating
organisational development. We
look to become a strategic partner,
delivering your message and support‐
ing your vision.
• Richard Lewis Communications is
dedicated to providing a comprehen‐
sive, integrated portfolio of services
in the areas of language, communi‐
cation and cross‐culture, enabling
corporations and governments to
produce and develop executives and
civil servants who can rise to the
challenge of international assign‐
ment.

Language Training
Communication Skills
Cross‐Culture
Richard D. Lewis is one of the world’s lead‐
ing cross‐cultural thinkers, and so we are
ideally placed to give a powerful and practi‐
cal cross‐cultural input to your training
where needed.
Communication is not just about language,
but about the values and world view be‐
hind our words and our behaviour. Most of
our training includes some cross‐cultural
elements, based on our own unique model
of culture and a vast bank of material that
no other language training centre has ac‐
cess to.
You can choose from more than 90 na‐
tional cultures to learn about, or take a
more general or functional approach.
For example, you may wish to improve the productivity and success of a virtual
team you are leading, or adapt your presentation for the USA, China or India.
There are many things we can do to improve our effectiveness as communicators –
whether as persuaders, presenters, negotiators or writers. And there is no single ap‐
proach that suits everyone, any more than any two people are the same, or any situa‐
tion.
The key is to find your strengths and help you become an authentic communicator, yet
one who is able to adapt to different people and situations.
At Richard Lewis Communications we listen to what you need to achieve, work out
together with you how you could develop, then plan a programme that will get results.
Communication is not purely about language. It is about how we:
• Get people to like us
• Put across a clear and logical message
• Create enthusiasm and passion
• Build trust
• Get people to do things

A firsthand experience...
“What makes Riversdown House unique is
the way it mixes language and communica‐
tion with cross‐cultural training in just the
right proportions that you need, its beauti‐
ful surroundings, and, of course, the dedi‐
cated and knowledgeable staff.
I have spent several weeks there on differ‐
ent occasions during my long career path
through a number of international jobs in
the global airline industry and can safely say
it is a really special place—somewhere you
never forget…”
Maunu von Lüders, former CEO of Jetline in
India and FlyNordic in Sweden.
Riversdown House—Our UK residential Centre
Riversdown House—an historic 14th
century manor house, one hour from
London – is Richard Lewis Communica‐
tions’ premier location for intensive
learning in England.
Founded in 1971, Riversdown has re‐
ceived over 15,000 clients from around
the world.
Richard D. Lewis’ bold and simple idea was to put busy professional people in a place
where they could live, breathe and dream in English around the clock. They would be
taught one‐to‐one or in small groups by trainers who understood what they needed to do
with the language.
They would form bonds with fellow participants and learn something of other cultures.
They would work hard, but also experience and enjoy stunning surroundings and meet
people who would make sure they never forgot their course. They would come back.
Richard Lewis Communications was founded
by Richard D. Lewis, one of Britain’s foremost
linguists. He also founded the Berlitz schools
in East Asia, Portugal and Finland and spent
several years in Japan, where he was per‐
sonal tutor to Empress Michiko.
One of his books, When Cultures Collide, has
sold over 500,000 copies and won the pres‐
tigious US Executive Club Book award in
1997.
Mr. Lewis has been awarded a knighthood in
Finland, in view of his 40 years’ experience
helping Finland to develop its international
links, including assisting Finland in prepara‐
tion for the Presidency of the EU. In 2009
Mr. Lewis was awarded the Insignia of Com‐
mander of the Order of the Lion of Finland.
