Training Seminar

After “IT” Happens Resiliency Building and Post Critical Incident Recovery

Indianapolis, Indiana

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Coined as the “second disaster”, the lack of post incident recovery and planning has far reaching implications to include: increased stress, secondary trauma, disruption of services, and potential reduction in workforce within a Law Enforcement Agency. This training explores the impacts that mass shootings and other critical incidents have on the officer, the agency and the community it serves. By developing a framework and creating a culture of resilience: “the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties”, attendees will receive tools, plans and solutions to get officers and agencies back to their “new normal”. Accomplished by the use of case studies, lessons learned and table top exercises attendees will be empowered with tools and plans to build resilience within their agency and their community.

• Students will learn the specific impacts that responding to a Mass Shooting has on an officer. They will also learn why the impacts of responding to a Mass Shooting are different than responding to other critical incidents.

• Students will be able to define and learn the effects of terms such as Trauma, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Cumulative Stress, Critical Incident Stress and Resiliency.

• Students will learn about specific resources that will help alleviate the psychological impact of Post-Traumatic Stress. Students will also learn ways to build psychological resiliency into their departments.

• Students will create a framework to begin planning for critical incident recovery in their specific community.

• Students will gain information on specific service providers in their area and existing networks that can assist with planning, training and recovery.

Table Top Exercise

And Framework Building Students will be broken into teams and be given scenarios. Students will be expected to build a response plan using resources specific to their home jurisdiction. These response plans will include developing a crisis communication plan, building a post incident command structure, developing task lists and mitigating issues before they occur.
