Component Description

BACKGROUND

Domestic Violence is any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse

(psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) between adults who are or

have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality. It

is considered as one of the forms of gender based violations and one of the most

prevalent human rights violations in the world.

Domestic violence is committed against women due to their disadvantageous

position in the society. It is recognized as a significant barrier in the empowerment

of women, with consequences not only on women, but in the development of the

country as a whole. In view of the prevalence as well as the pervasiveness of

domestic violence, several Acts and Policies have been enacted by the State. Issues

pertaining to Domestic Violence in the context of human rights are addressed by

this training programme.

The training had the specific aim of-

- Building knowledge on domestic violence within the contest of human

rights, dimensions of DV, the roles and responsibilities of functionaries in

working towards protecting women from domestic violence

Intended

Audience(s) Functionaries from the departments of Social Welfare, Women and Child

Development, Backward and Minorities, Law

Training Objectives Identify different types of gender-based violence, its victims and

perpetrators

Explain the dimensions of domestic violence

Analyze domestic violence from the human rights perspective.

State the interventions made by the State in curbing domestic violence

List the roles that the different stakeholders in implementation of Domestic

Violence Act, 2005

Introduction to the course

Contents Introduction and eliciting expectations

Sub Contents Introduction to the training programme, getting to know the participants,

listing expectations from the training programme and introducing training

objectives

At the end of the session, the participants will be able to

Get to know each other, build rapport

List their expectations of the programme

Describe the objectives of the programme

Process

Training Coordinator welcomes the trainees, introduces

himself/herself.

Participants are requested to introduce themselves by way of an ice-

breaking session, which helps participants to get to know each other.

The training coordinator requests the participants to list the

expectations from this training programme on a card/whitepaper and

pin the cards

The way in which the programme is scheduled, the objectives and the

session- wise details are also to be presented. This could be by way of

power point presentation.

The list of expectations should be retained as pin ups in the training

hall till the end of the course.
