Training Health Services Laboratories’ (HSL) Faculty of Education and Training exists to ensure our workforce has excellent knowledge and skills and provides a focus to share learning with partners in universities and beyond.

Professor Michael Patton, HSL Medical Director, chairs the Faculty. He explains: “Everyone who works in a laboratory needs training and education and it doesn’t stop on leaving college. In a scientific area like pathology there is continuous technological change. Our remit is from statutory health and safety training through to continuous professional development for our scientific laboratory staff and on to postgraduate medical education for medical staff - learning lies at the heart of what we do.”

Faculty of Education & Training The Faculty of Education and Training is an expert group providing leadership and links to professional and regulatory bodies and the institutions for higher education in London. HSL was the first organisation to achieve corporate wide IBMS training approval for pre and post training. In 2018 among the laboratory staff we had over 40 undertaking IBMS registration portfolios, over 60 completing IBMS Specialist portfolios, 20 taking MSc degrees and 11 preparing for the FRCPath examination. We provide a unique software solution to support all the training online and ensure wider access to flexible training opportunities. HSL also supports staff in a range of external training courses and conferences, including attendance and pressentations at international conferences.
