Supplies and Environment

Supplies for reprocessing are readily available:

PPE, as defined by HLD manufacturer and facility procedures.

Pre-Clean/Drying Supplies, as defined by probe manufacturer and facility procedures.

High-level disinfection supplies compatible with GUS:

HLD Solution - OPA, Glutaraldehyde, or Hydrogen Peroxide

MRC test strips

Area should be clean and free from clutter as defined by facility procedures.

Daily Checks / Prior to Operation of GUS

Visually inspect electrical connections, fan operation, and exterior of the unit daily.

Transportation of Dirty Probe

Post-exam, transport ultrasound probe according to the manufacturer’s IFU.

For TEE probes using CIVCO’s transport tray, place the dirty probe in the clean tray & flip lid to dirty. Transport probe to reprocessing location and dispose of tray.

Pre-clean

Reference your ultrasound probe manufacturers’ IFU for pre-cleaning instructions.

Visually inspect entire ultrasound probe to ensure it is clean.

CIVCO offers dry and enzymatic sponges, disinfecting wipes, and lint-free cloths to aid a compliant pre-clean process.

High-Level Disinfection

Make sure the GUS Disinfection Soak Station is ON before opening door and removing caps.

Fill the GUS containers with an approved HLD.

Take temperature using thermometer. Log results onto GUS Disinfection Soak Station Log attached to the end of this training guide.

Simplify your TEE probe cleaning process by contacting 800.445.6741.

Dip one MRC test strip into the HLD, holding it submerged for length specified in the HLD manufacturer’s IFU. Remove the test strip.

After waiting the specified time indicated on the manufacturer’s bottle, compare the test strip to the color chart on the manufacturer’s bottle. Log results onto GUS Disinfection Soak Station Log attached to the end of this training guide.

NOTE: A FAIL result requires a new bottle of HLD. See Disinfectant Disposal Section of this training guide.

Gently insert probe into HLD container by following the directions in the operator’s manual for proper insertion.

Use timer to calculate soak time. Soak time is dependent on your high-level disinfectant manufacturer’s instructions for use.

For TEE probes only, conduct leak testing according to manufacturer’s instructions. Log results onto GUS Disinfection Soak Station Log attached to the end of this training guide.

After soak time, the first rinse is performed in the “initial rinse” container in the GUS station to avoid off-gassing and drips.

Some disinfectants require more than one rinse. Follow the probe and disinfectant manufacturer’s rinsing instructions.

After rinsing, carefully remove and dry the probe according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Transportation of Clean Probe

Post disinfection, transport ultrasound probe according to the manufacturer’s IFU.

For TEE probes using CIVCO’s transport tray, use a clean tray to transport the disinfected probe to its storage cabinet.

Storage of Clean Probe

REF #610-1323 REF #610-1327

“Store the device in a manner that will protect from damage or contamination… Hanging vertically in a cabinet and storing in a clean environment.” – The Joint Commission

GUS Maintenance

Disinfectant Disposal

While the GUS is ON, follow the HLD manufacturer’s instructions for use for neutralizing the HLD prior to disposal.

Wash and rinse container thoroughly following the cleaning instructions in the Operator’s Manual to remove any residual neutralizer.

Refill HLD at the GUS station while it is ON. Pour HLD into the container up to the maximum fill level established.

Test Strip Quality Control

Quality Control must be performed when a new bottle of test strips is opened. Test strips can be used for the number of days after opening specified by the manufacturer or the expiration date, whichever occurs first. Discard any test strip bottle left open longer than allowed by manufacturer’s instructions.

Filter Replacement

Change Filter every 6 months following directions in Operator’s Manual.

DISCLAIMER:

The following information highlights topics and recommendations presented during this training.

Please refer to your GUS Disinfection Soak Station for TEE Probes or GUS Disinfection Soak Station for Endocavity Probes Operators Manual for specific details related to the care and reprocessing of your ultrasound probes.
