SMETS 2 Update Including installation details for SKU2 Comms Hubs & Aerials

Introduction
There are potential scenarios that could occur during SMETS2 installations that will prevent a customers SMETS2 system from operating in Smart mode. Installing a SMETS1 meter (as we do today) will not be an option. As such, where a single rate credit SMETS2 meter does not successfully commission, you must now leave that installed meter on-site in line with the instructions in this document.
This currently applies to single rate credit meters only.
Multi rate cannot be done as tariff & switching calendars are not downloaded to the meter where there is no WAN
PAYG can only be done if the meter is switched to credit

Install and Leave Process
For all SMETS 2 meters that have WAN but haven’t commissioned
For any SMETS 2 meter regardless of Comms hubs that has WAN
connectivity but hasn’t commissioned (due to an EDF Energy issue)
The Meters should be left installed (where not PAYG or 2 Rate) and
recorded as Complete Not Commissioned (SMETS2)
Note: Multi rate or PAYG cannot be left not commissioned

Where there is no WAN on SKU 1 comms hub
Where there is no WAN we will fit a SKU2 comms hub and associated aerials to improve chances of getting a WAN connection.
An Aerial must always be fitted with a SKU2 comms hub
1. Installers should always try a SKU1 Comms Hub first. If it does not work follow the prescribed DCC business rule:
2. Reboot SKU 1 (remove for 3-4 minutes then put back on) – still no WAN?
3. Try another SKU1 Comms Hub – still no WAN? 4. Install SKU2 with T1 aerial – still no WAN? 5. Change T1 aerial for a T2 aerial (re-package T1 to use again) –
still no WAN? 6. Leave SMETS2 electricity meter, SKU2 and T2 aerial in situ and
install gas meter (no PPMID) 7. Record installation as ‘Install and Leave’ and remember to
populate the aerial pop-up box.
Note : The DCC may request that an SKU2 comms hub is installed as first preference this will be indicated in the job instructions Do not leave any SMETS 1 Non Comm leaflets on SMETS
Install and Leave cannot be used for PAYG or Muliti rate
These must be commissioned The Legacy meter would need to be re-installed

Cover for aerial connection point
Installers should inspect the aerial, aerial lead and connector for physical damage before attaching to the Comms Hub. A crushed or kinked aerial lead dielectric can reduce
the signal strength.
Before installing an aerial always ensure that the customer is happy to have one fitted.
The installation of the aerial and SKU 2 Comms Hub should be considered in two stages;
Locate the aerial and route the aerial lead to the Comms Hub,
Secure the aerial and the aerial lead.

Connect the aerial to the SKU 2 Comms Hub and hot plug into the meter. Holding the hub in position where necessary (once hub cover is removed it is no longer secured to the meter). Be careful not to ‘cross-thread’ when connecting aerial lead to the Comms Hub
• The Comms Hub LEDs provide an indication of signal strength for one minute after a finger tight connection has been made
• Always attempt to locate the aerial as high as possible and must be vertical
• Try to avoid close proximity to large metal objects
• Power-up before reverting to the normal install sequence. If there is a need to re-check the signal strength, then remove the aerial, leave for one minute and then replace. If the Comms Hub LEDs indicate no signal strength, then this becomes an install and leave.
• There may be more than one possible location for the aerial. The installer should attempt various locations with the aerial lead connected to the hub to determine which position provides the highest signal strength in an area that is suitable for fixing the aerial with the supplied adhesive strip (cleaning pad provided).

• Once the adhesive strip has been attached to the aerial it can be fixed in position on a surface which is free from dust and moisture. If fitting the aerial to the meter board, fixing screws can be used.
• The aerial should always be fitted in a vertical position, with the aerial lead at the bottom
Finished Installation
In this example sticky pads and small cable ties have been used to secure the aerial lead. There will be similar sticky pads with screw fixings available for use on meter boards. The excess aerial lead has been coiled up and affixed to sticky pads top and bottom, with a further tie pulling the middle together. All cable ties should be trimmed after fixing, without leaving sharp edges. The aerial lead from the Comms Hub does not interfere with the operational buttons of the meter.
Aerials for indoor use only

Decide how the aerial should be permanently fixed in the
chosen location (screws (if meter board) or sticky pad
provided with the aerial). The fixing surface should be flat and
free from dust and moisture. Use the alcohol wipe (supplied
with both T1 and T2 aerials) to clean the surface where aerial
is to be fixed and dry with blue roll, if required, before affixing
with the adhesive strip.
Take the aerial lead from the aerial back to the Comms Hub using the chosen route. Connect the aerial connector to the Comms Hub. Use sticky pads to keep the aerial lead neat & tidy, This should be located either to the right or the left of the meter, but not on the terminal cover or the Comms Hub.
Trim cable tie ensuring not to leave a sharp edge.
Once the optimum aerial location has been determined, then: Disconnect the aerial lead from the Comms Hub
Remove the appropriate break out from the base of the aerial to permit an appropriate exit for the aerial lead using the tip of long-nosed pliers (see left). There are three break-outs that can be used, one at the bottom and one on each side.

Secure the aerial lead to the meters (right or left ) using the sticky pad and a tie wrap taking care not to obscure any of the meter buttons, the meter terminal cover or the Comms Hub. The aerial lead bend radius should be sufficiently large not to cause any kinks or damage, but not so large as to unnecessarily obscure parts of the meter. Replace the cover over the top of the aerial lead connector on the Comms Hub
Coil up any excess aerial lead and secure as initially planned. Avoid leaving any excess cable where it might snag or cause a nuisance.
INCORRECT CORRECT
With the aerial now fixed and the cover replaced, continue with the installation and commissioning of the meter.

If customer refuses to have a T1 or T2 aerial installed in their property:
- Explain to customer they will not have SMART functionality without the aerial.
- Leave the SMETS2 Electric meter installed (where not PAYG or 2 Rate)
- Leave SKU 2 comms hub fitted (make a note on HHU that
Customer has refused Aerial)
- Install SMETS2 Gas meter
- Do Not leave a PPMID
