Training in Financial Literacy & Financial Inclusion

Geography and diversity poses a serious challenge to programs in financial literacy in countries as large

as India; how does one impart uniform training to a target audience with differing demographics

different customs, different saving habits and different languages. A

primary challenge is basic literacy; a large portion of the population does

not have access to primary schooling.

Technology has been a natural solution to this dilemma. However,

technology-based solutions can boomerang if we do not factor in the

unpredictable environment and logistical issues which might crop up.

TrainingCentral has approached this problem by having an optimal mix of

various delivery mediaclassroom, computers and mobile phones.

Through this note, we explain the approach taken by TrainingCentral in

structuring a solution in Financial Literacy for a leading player in the MFI

operations. This training was provided to the agent who represented the

company in extending the reach of financial services at remote locations.

    Training Areas

    I. Functional training or training of finance conceptsFoundation-level training in finance concepts is provided to facilitate the agents day-to-day tasks.

It ensures that he disseminates financial knowledge correctly and in a uniform manner. This

ensures that end-customers make their financial decisions in an informed manner.

II. Technical training or training in banking processesThis training provides systemic knowledge of banking as well as the financial processes for all

    transactions.

III. Behavioural Training or training in the soft skillsBehavioural training provides the agent with the capability to approach the end-customer with

confidence and convey a uniform identity of the financial institution he represents. It ensures that

the agent is a spirited and convincing champion of financial inclusion. The end-customer is also

clear regarding the entity the agent represents and this ensures easier interaction.

    Distinctive features of TrainingCentral content

Effectiveness of training in this nascent area is an elusive objective. TrainingCentral addressed this

challenge by delivering solutions with a mix across the following media - E-learning content, Classroom

training content, Mobile-based training content and Publications. E-learning and classroom content

would provide induction and preliminary training to get the agent operational in the field. The mobile-

based content and publication content will ensure that the operations continue unhindered and that

help is always within arms reach.

Below are some of the characteristics of the content created by us:

    1. Multi-lingual Interface TrainingCentral solutions offer multi-lingual support in all media offinancial education, extending to classroom, e-learning, mobile-based programs and publications.

Our internally established processes ensure that financial literature is translated correctly and

without losing the inherent intent and meaning. Presentation in the various media is ensured by

    deploying appropriate technology.

We have delivered e-learning courses in English, Hindi, Telugu and Marathi. The classroom and e-

learning content has similarly been delivered in English, Hindi and Telugu.

    2. Voice-overs in appropriate languages - Basic literacy, and therefore, the capability to understandthe written/translated word cannot be assumed to be a given. To facilitate better understanding,

content in electronic media is supported by voice-over from professional voice-over artists with

clear diction. TrainingCentral has delivered e-learning courses and m-learning courses with voice-

overs in English, Hindi, Telugu and Marathi. A unique framework of managing translation as well as

voice-over capability empowers us to deliver courses in virtually any language Indic or foreign.

    Training via the Mobile Phone

A promising (and gradually becoming ubiquitous) medium of training is the mobile phone (or hand-

phone or cell-phone). While the screen size (in the popular segment limited to 128x160 pixels) haslimited presenting capability, its advantages far out-strip this shortcoming; it can play voice, video

and can show text on the screen and can work for long periods of time without requiring electricity.

In India, more than 65% of the population owns a mobile phone. This is not an exception. Across the

world, mobile penetration is at similar levels in developing economies. In developed economies,

mobile penetration is at more than 100%, indicating ownership of more than one mobile phone per

individual. And financial inclusion is also a focus of these economies.

A powerful feature of phones sold in India is that they have regional font display capability.

Combined with the audio and video capability (notwithstanding its limited size), the features form amedium to penetrate a large section of the population.

    3. Pictorial depictions - TrainingCentral uses high-end graphic illustrators to ensure effectiveness ofthe delivered content. Classroom and publications media are simplified such that the agent as well

as the end-customer is able to understand the learning conveyed.

We have used picture stories or comic-strip based approach in book form to convey the foundation

level lessons in financial best practices and products.4. Mobile-based off-line reference library The executive in the field requiring support and assistance

in implementing a banking process might not have easy access to telephonic or internet support.

We have created a viable access which resides on his mobile phone. The complete application

workflow is mimicked on the phone, with the screen-by-screen progress, voice-over and step-by-

step text instructions in a language of his choice1

    available to him.

1Subject to his mobile being capable of showing the text.
