For presentations in conference rooms and other locations using a desktop PC, it can be difficult to operate the projector while viewing a distant screen. With the XEED SX50's RGB output function, images can be transferred to the monitor for confirmation during the course of the presentation.

All menu operations can be performed in three steps

Menus have been designed with ease of use as a priority, to permit rapid, accurate, intuitive operation. All operations can be performed within three steps of initial menu display.

Moveable menu display position

The menu display can be moved as needed. If, for instance, the menu obscures an important portion of the image, or disappears when the screen size is changed, the position of the menu can be adjusted.


Icon display for function keys Function keys on the projector and on the remote control share the same icons.

Direct operation Operations often performed from the remote control have been assigned buttons, for rapid, intuitive operation without complicated input sequences.

Self-illuminating remote control Buttons on the remote control are self-illuminating for ease of operation in the dark. The red-colored illumination minimizes eye stress even when the pupil is dilated in a dark projection room. This also prevents projected images from appearing blacked out when the screen is viewed after operating the remote control.

Custom settings and registration The user can customize settings for specific purposes and register these settings for future use. (up to 12 PC input settings; 12 video input settings)

Password function A password function can be enabled to prevent tampering or unauthorized use.

A beep tone can be sounded to indicate power-on/power-off and key functions, a convenient audio confirmation to prevent mistaken operation. When not needed, the tone can be disabled from the menu.

Color display range sRGB is an international standard to unify color reproduction and color spaces that may differ according to the device or manufacturer, as defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

Depending on the manufacturer and the device, digital cameras, monitors, and other input and output devices have very different mechanisms for producing color. To minimize disparities and ensure accurate color mapping among a variety of output devices, a common range of color definitions has been standardized.

When sRGB image mode is selected, the XEED SX50 accurately displays data and images produced according to sRGB standards.


Screen color correction This color correction mode allows for display of images on blackboards often found in classroom settings. Images projected directly on the blackboard can be displayed in natural colors.

Memory color correction function Skies are blue, grass is green. . . people tend to remember colors as more vivid than they actually are. The XEED SX50 color memory mode offers three levels of emphasis, making it possible to display photos of landscapes and people in colors that resemble the colors as they are remembered.

Characteristics of LCOS reflective LCD panels

LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) reflective LCD panels utilized in the XEED SX50 are a next-generation image display device that produces seamless, lattice-free images.

Because the drive circuit is positioned between the pixels, a portion of the light is blocked, projecting a grid-like lattice pattern on the screen.

Thin liquid crystal layer produces moving images with minimal after-image.

The thickness of the liquid crystal layer is referred to as the “cell gap”. When images are displayed by liquid crystal, the narrower the cell gap, the higher the drive speed of the liquid crystal, resulting in superior display of moving images.

Because light travels through the liquid crystal layer twice by bouncing off the reflective mirror, LCOS reflective LCD panels have a narrow cell gap, approximately half that of transmissive LCD panels. Thus, LCOS reflective LCD panels have a faster response, resulting in superior moving image display.

A compact, lightweight projector

The AISYS optical system not only maximizes the performance of LCOS reflective LCD panels, it also contributes to a significant reduction in projector size and weight. Because light in the horizontal direction is flattened for transmission to the PBS (Polarization Beam Splitter), the focal length can be shortened. Issues since product launch

1. Command codes.Command codes were not supported in the first shipments.

Actually this was not planned to be included, but a lot of customers bought the product thinking that the command codes were supported. This was obvious, because the previous Canon projectors supported the command codes. Therefore Canon decided to produce a

firmware update specifically for this. Because the previous models were actually not produced in-house, also the command codes were different. Because of that also the customer had to use different codes, compared with the previous models. Where the previous models used Hexadecimal codes, the SX50 uses codes like “Power ON”. Tomorrow during the firmware update procedure we will also handle the various procedures used to check whether the command codes are working.2. Dust issue

This issue is the biggest problem that needed to be tackled.First we discovered that when a new projector was used for not even an hour some particles could be seen if you knew how to look for them. When focusing on the particles, the smallest particles could be seen. When focusing on the projected image these small particles cannot be seen. In some time, bigger particles could be seen that could also be seen when focused on the projected image. These bigger particles will cause the customersto complain. In the earlier models it was just a matter of time for these bigger particles to appear.The particles come from outside of the projector.In the beginning also from the factory some particles were inside the projector that would end up on the LCOS panel.


In the beginning it was discovered that the metal paint on the inside of the external Covers could easily come off, when only using a cotton swab.After investigation of the material found on the LCOS panels, the conclusion was that it was an organic polyamide, which for example can be found in skin.

a. Dust came in through the respirator area (where the clip is to open the cover).An extra filter was added.b. Also the fan dust was coated in the inside with a sticky surface. This will prevent the dust from reaching the LCOS panel if it gets to the Fan duct.c. The Green en Red LCOS panel got an extra shield, between the LCOS panel and the Prisms. This will prevent the dust from reaching the LCOS panels. Due to technical restrictions, it was not possible to also shield off the Blue LCOS panel., Luckely this is the least affected color and also the least visible color concerning details.

With the fully modified projector a test was done over 24hours together with amodified version without the final modification (LCOS shielding).The difference was huge. Green and red didn`t get any dust particles. Only one very small particle was added in the blue LCOS panel. In the other projector several particles were added during the test (around 10, not all big ones).


3. Pin-cushion distortion.The pin-cushion distortion can be seen is only on the top side. (Explain with drawings) This is a product limitation. If a customer complains about this issue, please say itis a product limitation.This issue came up from Marketings side for a big customer, so as an exeption Canon inc. made a special lens for correction to put in front of the projectors lens.

Issues concerning firmware updates will be handled tomorrow.(including command codes)


Disassemble & assemble the unit

• Notice the metal paint on the inside of the external covers. This paint exist out of very small metal particles that will come off when scrubbed/touched. Please be carefull with this when disassebling/assembling the device.• Please make sure to have seen all current Service Bulletines for the SX50, before repairing.

We wanted to fully modify an SX50, but unfortunately Canon inc. shipped out the wrong parts to us.

FS, Vcom and Color correction are all done in the factory. These adjustments are transfered to the new mainboard by means of EEPROM Data transfer.If the data from the old pcb is lost, please use the data files that can be found On the TSS site for each individual product according to the serialnumber.D/A gain adjustment => if this is not good, vertical lines with 8 pixels in between will be seen. The D/A gain is not included in the EEPROM Data transfer.

Firmware updates

In the projector 2 locations can be found where firmware version can be changed.These locations are H8 (System Microcomputer) and PW (Pixel Works, controls images).H8 takes care of : 1. Safety circuit, 2. On/Off, 3. Temperature control, 4. Fan controlPW controls images.

Because for the latest firmware version only the PW is changed, please keep in mind that when you update a projector that contains V 1.0000 or V 01.0202 to first do theupdate of V 01.0303 , before doing V 01.0403.(V01.0403 => 01 is the mainboard version, 04 is the PW version, 03 is the H8 version)

From Canon inc. we actualy got the following procedure to check the amount of Pixel Flair:

1. First measure according to the pixel flair-document above.2. If not sure about the amount of pixel flair, please project the “fullscreen”-chart.3. If still not sure, project an xls-sheet with all zeros.

If after all these steps you still don`t think it is OK, please try to repair the product.

The pixel flair issue mainly occurred in the LV-72xx series.During the training it was shown exactly what an OK product looks like(LV72xx series).Also use this experience when trying to find out if the product is within or outside of the Specifications.During the training Marc Masson (RCC France) came with the issue that something is not right with the lens (the part on which it is mounted). If the front of the lens is slightly pressedon the correct location unsharpness in the corners are totally corrected. We will further Investigate this issue and come back to it.

Exceptional Low-light Performance

Color video with only 1 lux illumination

Offering class-leading low-light performance, the VB-C50i is able to capture color video with as little as 1 lux of illumination. Noise reduction keeps the image clear at any level of lighting.

Infrared video capture (Night Mode)

In addition, the VB-C50i can capture black & white images using infrared light. The camera’s built-in infrared lamp provides illumination in complete darkness.

You can also attach an optional (commercially available) IR lamp that can be turned on using the camera’s alarm contacts.

What Is Multistreaming?

The VB-C50i captures high-quality video (768 x 576 pixels, 25 fps). However, not all viewers may want or be able to receive such high-resolution video. A smaller-sized image may be just fine for viewers with slow network connections or video-enabled PDAs, for example.

To better handle a diverse range of user needs, the VB-C50i is able to broadcast the same video in three different sizes. Viewers can request which size they want.


Audio Input Capability

A new feature allows voice data to be sent over networks to the VB-C50i. Monitoring personnel can thus talk into a microphone connected to their PC and have themselves heard through a speaker connected to the VB-C50i camera. Audio input is provided in Admin Viewer Ver. 3.50, which includes VAD (Voice Activation Detection) and CNG (Comfort Noise Generation) to ensure high audio quality.

Motion Detection & Auto Tracking

Motion detection

Four areas can be selected for motion detection. (Areas may overlap.) When movement is detected in an area, the VB-C50i will start a specified action, such as auto-tracking and/or picture recording.

Sensitivity, area ratio, and duration required to detect motion can be independently set for each of the four areas.

Auto tracking

If motion is detected, the VB-C50i will pan and tilt automatically to capture this movement. It will center the picture on the area in which motion is detected.

Independent settings for each area

In a single monitoring scene, some types of movement may be more common to one area than another. This is why the VB-C50i lets users set different values in each area for how much motion is required to trigger the VB-C50i.

Example

The red area could be set so that it’s only sensitive to unusual car movement. Therefore, a person walking through this area will not be detected because he or she is too small. Also, a car moving at a speed normal to this area will not be detected. Instead, the VB-C50i will be triggered only if something as large as a car moves faster than normal through this area.


Preset Viewing Angles & Preset Tour

20 presets

A preset viewing angle is composed of settings for pan, tilt, and zoom. Up to 20 preset viewing angles can be programmed to enable smooth monitoring of a broad area. By using presets, viewers can quickly move the camera to check specific locations.

A “tour” can be programmed so that the VB-C50i automatically moves from one preset viewing angle to another at specified intervals. A tour can be ongoing continuously or conducted only when needed.

Advanced Scheduling Functions

Schedule Setting Tool

Schedules are prepared with the VB Administration Tools.

The Schedule Setting Tool provides various camera actions which can be activated at specific times or dates, or by motion.

• Timer RecordingStill images are captured at specified times and stored in the camera’s built-in memory.

• Motion DetectionAuto tracking and/or image recording begins when motion is detected within the picture.

• Night Mode Images are recorded in the dark.

Image Storage Functions

The VB-C50i has approximately 15MB of built-in memory for temporary storage of captured images, and several functions related to image storage.

VB Administration Tools: Main Features

Panorama Creation Tool • Creates a single image that displays a wide region of the camera’s

capture area.

View Restriction Tool• Restricts the pan/tilt range that viewers can access.

Preset Setting Tool• Sets preset viewing angles, which enables viewers to easily move

the camera to a desired point. Preset tour settings are included.

Schedule Setting Tool• Sets schedule-based or motion-activated picture recording. Settings

VB Administration Tools: Panorama Creation

A panorama is composed of multiple shots and displays a wide region of the VB-C50i’s capture area.

Viewers can use the panorama to choose the viewing angle and zoom by simply dragging a “scope” box over any area in the panorama window.

VBCollector: Main Features

VBCollector Ver. 2.01 makes it possible to have pictures recorded in the VB-C50i’s built-in memory automatically downloaded to a PC for permanent storage.

• Schedule-based downloading of captured images to a PC.

• When the storage limit of the camera is nearly reached, a warning is sent to the server and stored images are then auto-matically downloaded to a PC.

The exercise was done by 3 groups of 3 people. Only the user guide was used.Finally every group succeeded. We found one problem, which was “no images were recorded in the memory of the camera”. This was caused by a wrong setting of the internal clock. After synchronizing the clock, everything worked fine.
