HE STEM Employability Skills Project – Train the Trainers Training Outline 11-12 Generic Training Skills Ice Breakers – run 2 different ice breakers* to get them talking to each other and show how useful they are Objectives – talk through the objectives of the session and how important aims and objectives are in planning and delivering training. What are your learning outcomes? What are their expectations of the training? What makes a good training session? Brainstorm ideas with students Communication / Facilitation Skills – Go over any they didn’t mention, emphasise the idea of questioning, getting attendees to think through ideas/answers, listening to their needs, using anecdotes, enabling interaction between participants etc Importance of evaluation and feedback Practicalities of running training – room layout, resources, AV, breaks, number of attendees, room temp, housekeeping etc 12-1pm Refresher of Employability Skills Training Session – probably slide at a time, not running the session but explaining purpose of each slide and what happens in the actual training. Highlight which bits the students are going to do and run through the two activities (skills matching and interview questions) to remind them how they work. Explain they will have to put together a case study of how they have acquired employability skills through being a student volunteer (using proforma we have put together) End with a brainstorm on what they need to remember to deliver their parts 1-1.30 Lunch 1.30- 2.15 Split them into two mixed groups and ask them to plan and then deliver to each other (and us) one of the two activities. This will give them experience of actually delivering activities. Feedback. This activity was undertaken as a part of the National HE STEM Programme, via the South West Spoke.
