Where does the US stand internationally?

• PIAAC Assessmento International assessment administered in

23 countries in 2011-12o 16-65 yr oldso 36 million Americans have low literacy

skills, nearly 24 million of whom are part of the workforce





Adults from low-educated families are 10 x more likely to have low skills


US Adults with low skills are 4x more likely to have poor/fair health – 2 x the int’l average

• President Obama signed the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) into law on July 22, 2014

• WIOA is a bipartisan effort• WIOA revised and reauthorized the Workforce

Investment Act of 1998• WIOA is authorized until 2020
