    Train Boarding Listening Exercise

Date: xx/xx/xx Class Level: High Beginner Timing: 30-45 minutes

Lesson Type & Subject: Listening Story Pictures Boarding a Train

Materials needed: Recording describing a young persons boarding of a train, including offering

his luggage to the luggage handler, dropping a ticket and receiving help from the conductor.

One larger image depicting all of the things just mentioned. Pictures of the various story

occurrences, one set for each student. Props for follow-up pantomime.

Lesson Objective: Strengthen listening skills through image recognition and confirm vocabulary

    through pantomime.

Assumptions: Some potential familiarity with train travel and high beginner level understanding

    of sentence structure.

Anticipated Problems & Solutions: Students may not be familiar with traveling by train and maynot know who the conductor is and other specifics of boarding. During the warm up, all the

different story aspects will be previewed/reviewed.

    Strategy One:

    Interaction: T>S, S>T Timing: 10 minutes

Purpose: Warm up and vocabulary preparation.

Using the main, large image showing all the factors in the story (train, conductor, passenger,

ticket, luggage handler, suitcase) ask the students if they can name any of them. Prompt

participation by asking who has ridden on a train before and other questions about the studentspossible experience with trips. For instance, Did you pack your clothes into something? What

is it called? Once the class has become familiar with the particular vocabulary items, continue.

    Strategy Two:

Interaction: T>S, Students listening Timing: 10-15 minutes

    Purpose: Listening for story order

Handout sets of images: passenger arriving at train station with suitcase in hand, luggage

handler putting suitcase onto train, passenger dropping his ticket, conductor picking up ticket,

passenger boarding train, train leaving station with passenger in window. Explain that as the

students listen, they should put the pictures in order as they happen. Check students work and

repeat recording if some have put images in the wrong order.

    Strategy Three:

Interaction: T>S, Students listening and responding in pantomime Timing: 15-20 minutes

Purpose: Listening to respond in pantomime

Handout props to students in groups of three. (These props can be paper cutouts: conductors

cap, luggage handlers vest, suitcase, ticket.) Explain that the students will act out the actions

described in the story as they happen. For this portion, it might be best to have the instructor

reading the story rather than the recording so that the instructor may prompt and correct as the

students listen and pantomime. Have the students all take turns pantomiming the story in

    groups.
