In what ways does your media product use, develop

or challenge forms and conventions of real

media products?

Page 3: Trailer evaluation

My media product was designed and planned in a way that would allow me to use and also challenge the forms and conventions of existing media products within my chosen genre: revenge thriller. The most apparent and effective way in which I did this was by ensuring that all actors within the film trailer were dressed in a formal way, the main character being dressed in a suit gives connotes power and a ‘so’ style film trailer.

Page 4: Trailer evaluation

The presence of formal clothing connotes the presence of money and with that comes power over the enemy in the film.

I took the conventions of the traditional mafia style films such as ‘Goodfellas’ and ‘Gangster squad’ including the clothing, vehicles and weapons and applied them to my genre. Although there are common conventions between these genres I aimed to take the best features of each genre and apply them to my own trailer. Post production feedback from a sample of my audience has shown me that I have been able to capture the conventions of these genres to create a dark mood within my film trailer. However, post production focus groups also indicated to me that the presence of the two genres may have caused confusion amongst the audience and as a result, may have caused some viewers to lose concentration.

Within the production of my media product I aimed to incorporate features of a specific existing media product which had interested me greatly with regards to the way in which conventions were adopted in order capture the audience and to keep them interested throughout the trailer.

The trailer for ‘Taken’ played a huge role in the way in which I used conventions in the production process. I took the idea of revenge from this film trailer and developed the storyline of my trailer around it. I took the presence of weapons as a convention of the genre but was unable to develop it due to legal restrictions.

I challenged the conventions of existing media products in my genre by building excitement amongst the audience without the use of physical violence. Many existing products use fight scenes in order to create excitement and to keep the audience engaged in their trailers, I chose to create excitement and anticipation through editing techniques, for example the non – diegetic sound and the reduced lighting o create darkness.

How does your media product represent particular

social groups?

Page 9: Trailer evaluation

In my film trailer there is a very select section of society represented throughout, white middle class men. They are represented as sophisticated through the presence of formal clothing, this gives the audience the impression that the characters are all reasonably wealthy. On the other hand, the vocabulary used by the characters could be described as ‘Common’ as terms such as “He’s mugging us off” and “Oi Danny” are usually associated with working class people from areas of south London and could be described as ‘Cockney’.

These factors involved in my trailer could be seen as reinforcing common stereotypes made about White, English males as common in terms of the way they act and speak. However, suits and formal clothing could be associated with other countries who typically take pride in their appearance such as Italy etc.

What kind of media institution might distribute

your media product and why?

Page 12: Trailer evaluation

It could be argued that large media conglomerates such as Universal and Time Warner may be interested in distributing my media product as they have enough funding to be able to take a risk in investing in a low-budget film such as mine. However, smaller film distributers may be interested in my media product as I would require little investment due to the low-budget nature of it. Distributors such as Revolver entertainment who specialize in ‘action/thriller’ films and are relatively small in comparison to media conglomerates may also consider distributing my film as it matches the themes of many films in their current product portfolio.

How effective is the combination of your main

media product and ancillary texts?

Page 14: Trailer evaluation

When designing and producing my main media product and ancillary texts I aimed to keep a consistent theme throughout all three items; the film trailer, film poster and magazine cover. This is done commonly in the film industry through the use of fonts and images, this is done in order to create association between the potential customer and the film. For example, a font may have been used throughout the whole promotional campaign of a film i.e. on posters, magazine covers and DVD covers

What have you learned from your audience feedback

In order to gain effective audience feedback from my main media product a large number students from all age groups were invited to watch it and fill out a questionnaire based on the production and contents of the trailer. The main aim of this was to find out whether it had been effective in creating the moods and influencing viewers feelings, which ultimately would lead to them watching the full film in the cinema.

Page 16: Trailer evaluation

Here is an example of the questionnaire I produced, it contains the following questions:• What do you feel after watching the film?• After watching the trailer, would you be interested

in watching the whole film?• Please name 2 films that contain features that are

most like those in the trailer.• Which of the following features/elements of the

trailer were most effective in communicating with you? Sound, music, lighting, camera shots, acting, the story, the editing.

• Do you think all of the above elements of the trailer work together in capturing your attention?

• Is there a specific moment/element which caused you to be bored/lose interest – please name the moment.

• Is there anything you would change to make the trailer more effective? Please explain shortly.

• Is there anything you would change to make the trailer more effective? Please explain shortly.

Page 17: Trailer evaluation

My audience feedback left me with 3 main conclusions about my film trailer:• It appeared confusing to the viewer: whilst I aimed

to create an element of enigma in my trailer through the use of editing, for example, not showing a full scene and cutting straight to another scene to leave the viewer wondering what happened. 21 of my 56 participants claimed that my trailer was confusion in response to the questionnaire.

Page 18: Trailer evaluation

• The majority of my viewers would be interested in watching the whole film:

35 of my 56 viewers answered yes when asked if they would be interested in watching the whole film. This shows me that my trailer was successful to an extent as it created interest in the actual film.

Page 19: Trailer evaluation

• My film trailer was most similar to ‘Taken’ and ‘Taken 2’; 9 out of 56 viewers identified similar features between my film trailer and the taken films, which I would consider a success as my trailer was very much based around the conventions and themes included in these films.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Page 21: Trailer evaluation

During the production of my media product and ancillary texts I used a number of different pieces of technology to make the process simple but create a product which may be close to industry standard. These pieces of hardware and software are shown on the following slides.

Page 22: Trailer evaluation

During the research and planning stage I used the internet in order to conduct research into existing media products, this allowed me to view existing trailers and research institutions i.e. Potential distributors. The main website I used for my research into existing products was IMDB, this site allowed me to watch the trailer but also allowed me to view information about it i.e. The synopsis.

Page 23: Trailer evaluation

During the shooting of my film trailer I used a combination of both a Samsung camcorder and an I pone 4s, the camcorder was most frequently used but the I phone was used when I did not have access to the camera. They both allowed for high quality filming however, the camcorder was obviously more powerful as filming is its primary function.

The main piece of technology used throughout the process of creating my media product was the Apple Mac, this allowed me to use a variety of pieces of softwarer which aided bithe research and planning and the editing process. This software included:• Imovie: used for editing my media product once footage had been uploaded onto the Mac.• Adobe photoshop: this software allowed to me explore effects and create my ancillary texts.• Safari (web browser): this enabled me to access websites auch as IMDB and google during research and planning.
