Let Them Eat Fish It all started with a phone call, when Alex Ehrlich –General Man-
ager of the DTBC, contacted me just before the “Cooper’s Blue Water Classic” with a fantastic idea. He said contestants don’t al-
ways need the fish they have brought in to weigh and any surplus fish could be donated to Foodbank.
Foodbank Northern Territory is a not for profit organisation locat-
ed in Berrimah, tasked with creating a central donation/collection
point for “Surplus” food in Darwin and for subsequent distribution to community service organisations. There are now over 90 such
organisations registered with Foodbank, which distribute the food to individuals and families who are struggling. Foodbank does not
generate substantial revenue, relying on contributions of money
and in-kind support, just like the donation of the fish from the Coopers Blue Water Classic.
Together with the Club, NT Water Police, NT Fisheries, Darwin
Fish Markets, competitors of the event and Foodbank NT, we
were able to achieve an amazing result. Competitors donated their fish, NT Water Police & NT Fisheries helped with the logistics
of this event, Zilko and his team from Darwin Fish Markets were outstanding,
donating their time to process the fish and a team from Foodbank including Peter Fisher, Andrew Hocking and myself used Darwin
Fish Marked facilities to cryovac the fish ready for distribution.
I would like to personally thank each of you who donated your
fish to this wonderful cause. We were able to distribute the fish, which created over 400 meals for many who had not eaten fish
for a long while.
As successful as last October’s event was, I am looking forward to
this year, with anticipation that more competitors will donate to this wonderful cause.

BARE SAND ISLAND WEEKEND
Each year the Club obtains permission from the Department of
Defence to have a family weekend on Bare Sand Island, which is
a small grass-covered sand island that lies 1nm southwest of
Quail Island on the western side of Bynoe Harbour. This has
proved to be a popular event on our calendar and for 2013, it will
be held on a weekend to be confirmed in September.
The island is also a nesting place for sea turtles and their hatch-
lings and our members often witness turtles making their way
either up the beach or down to the water. Researchers from
Charles Darwin University are often on the island during our
weekend.
It is a great weekend and sitting around the campfire each night
telling stories about the ones that got away are a highlight. Stay
tuned for the dates.
