Le Havre (2011)

Trailer Why screaming? What is wrong with his wife? Why are they trying so hard to find the boy? Racism? What era? Where does the boy come from? Who’s on the stretcher? Why did he run away? Why is he at the station? What happens to the boy in the end? Does he get found?

ComedyDrama, art house?

Unusual relationship. A chance meeting. Elements of humour and danger. Quite a short trailer. Enough of an idea of story line without giving away everything. Still left wanting to know more. Heart warming. Unique storyline. French music creates a strong French feel. Two people helping one another in different ways. Lovable characters. Blunt humour.

Lots of close up head shots. Over shoulder shot particularly effective, looking over water. Makes room for text.

The perks of being a wallflower(2012)

Trailer Who’s he writing to? Why is he using a type writer? What era is it set in? Why is he a ‘wallflower’/misfit? Is she a love interest? First day where? Where has he come from? Is his teacher going to be main role in film? Is she a performer? Why is he fighting?

Drama/ Romance/ Comedy

Elements of humour. Uplifting music. Humour created by pauses and music stopping for punch lines and witty lines. Use of text to explain to audience is helpful. Choice of music and ‘misfit’ theme makes it different to other typical American high school based films. Lets on a lot in the trailer.

Birds eye view shot of party/dancing. Interesting shots and angles make it look different to other American high school style films. Lots of zooming out on him on his won, highlighting his loneliness.

The Woman in Black (2012)

Trailer Why so many shots of children? What’s in the house? Who is ‘she’? Why is he arriving to this house? Why has he travelled here? Is it a real place? Reality? Very stylised. What is the story line? Are the children seen to be evil or victims?

Horror/Thriller Scary children. Juxtaposed with their usual innocence and naivety. Makes it extra creepy. Typical horror film convention, the use of children. Cliché? Windy, cold weather, Objects personified. Pathetic fallacy. Old fashioned costumes and props. What era is it set?

Close up shots of scary objects to scare audience. Contrast of long landscape shots with close ups. The shot with wagon and horse in landscape accentuates the fact nothing else is around. Creepy setting. More shots of what is inside the house, rather than house itself. Suggests that evil is inside but leaves audience questioning what it is.

A Dangerous Method (2011)

Trailer When is it set? What is her story? Where has she come from? Why is she so disturbed? What has he done that is ‘unforgiveable’?

Thriller/Drama/Biography

Lots of reaction shots. Mixture of agony and love. Emotional expressions. Makes you want to watch it. As soon as you see a happy scene it is counteracted by a sad/emotional one. Hints at how the film will be structured. Cuts in time with music. Reveals a lot in trailer.

Over shoulder shot looking across water particularly effective. Close up at the beginning of hands. A lot of mid shots of characters, and landscape long shots. Close ups of her expressions.

House at the end of the Street(2012)

Trailer What is she running from? What's in the bottle? Medication? Who’s Kerry Anne? Who is he? What relation does he have to the evil girl? Are they together? Love interest? Can he control what the evil girl does? Why have they moved house in the first place? Why does he look so nervous and on edge? Why so much rewinding? Going back in time?

Horror/Thriller The use of rewind adds to sense of drama and overall scariness. Quite similar plot to other horror films. Predictable? Cliché? Screams, young girl, murder, scary house, night shots, all typical horror conventions. Music stopping and starting adds to suspense. Ticking clock adds adrenaline. Jumpy. Cuts to different shots very fast. Lots of doors opening and closing, Thunder and lightening. Spooky weather.

Zoom shot. Fade to black regularly. Close up of bottle to quick cut to mid shot is out of the blue and jumpy for audience. Sudden flash of someone appearing. Use of rewind. Close up of knife, door knobs, adding suspense.
