Nutrition Info
Fact or Fiction? With so much nutrition news avail-
able it’s hard to know what to believe or whom to trust. Is the
information unk or genuine science? And what
does a healthy plate look like in the fast-food age? Registered
dietitians are trained nutrition experts, skilled n translating
science and nutri-
tional information into practical and healthy eating plans to help
you make healthy choices. Registered dietitians work in a variety
of places: hospitals, community health centres, long-term care,
schools. Others are employed behind the scenes and inuence what we
eat every day. Public health programs, food policy, food product
development and menu development are just some of the areas where
they work. You might even nd a dietitian at your sport club, your
gym or at your grocery store.
What sets registered dietitians apart in our province is that they
are regulated by the College of Dietitians. Tis means that they are
accountable to deliver safe, competent and ethical nutrition
services. It also means that if you have concerns about the
services you received from a dietitian, you can call the college
for help. Te college
regulates the profession to make sure your registered dietitian
meets high practice standards and can provide quality nutrition
care to help you and your family eat better. Check the Register of
Dietitians online at www. mydietitian.ca to make sure your
nutrition expert is registered.

WRITING A CLASSIFIED AD THAT WORKS!
• Put yourself in the buyer’s shoes. What details would you want to
know about an item you were interested in buying?
• Include the brand name (manufacturers spend mil- lions promoting
the name and enhancing the image of their products, so take
advantage of it). Would you rather buy a refrigerator or a
Frigidaire?
• List the item’s best features and what makes your item different
from others in the same category. (Re-
member, the more you tell, the clearer picture a poten- tial buyer
gets, making it easier for you to sell.)
• Take time to research pricing for your article so that you price
it reasonably (overpriced items may not re- ceive calls).
• Include your phone number and the best times to call. • Ask for
the sale...one gentleman put “BUY THIS CAR!” in his
ad and was pleasantly surprised by the response to his ad!

Open House At Meadow Creek
Fall is around the corner and it’s that “redd” time of year again;
not the colour of the leaves, but when the Kokanee head up local
streams and rivers to dig their redds (gravel nests) and spawn. And
Meadow Creek Spawning Chan- nel, at the north end of Kootenay Lake,
is a great place to view them, especially during the free, annual
Open House between 10 a.m. and 2 pm, on Saturday, September
12.
Te channel is managed by the Ministry of Forests,
Lands and Natural Resource Operations (FLNRO), and primarily funded
by the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP). It is located
about four kilometers west of Meadow Creek.
Te Open House provides a great opportunity to talk to FLNRO
biologists and eld technicians, and view the sh at (or near) the
peak of their run. Tere will also be infor- mation about Grizzly
Bears, BearSmart, and the Nutrient Restoration Program in Kootenay
Lake.
“ypically there are tens of thousands of spawning
Kokanee to be viewed together each year,” said FWCPColumbia Region
Manager, Crystal Klym. “And it is always quite an amazing
site.”
Te 3.3 kilometer looping channel, built in 1967 with BC Hydro funds
to compensate for upstream spawn- ing habitat lost due to the
construction of Duncan Dam, can accommodate several hundred
thousand spawning Kokanee, and millions of eggs in the
gravel.
Te channel is open to the public every day between 10 am and 2 pm
for the duration of the spawning season that usually runs from late
August through to late September.
With the congregating Kokanee, the channel attracts bothBlack and
Grizzly Bears, and FLNRO may order a tem- porary total closure to
the public if there are high bear densities during the regular open
hours.
Te FWCP is a partnership between the Province of BC, BC Hydro,
Fisheries and Oceans Canada, First Nations and Public Stakeholders
to conserve and enhance sh and wildlife impacted by the
construction of BC Hydro dams.
For more information about the Open House, and any possible
temporary closures, phone 250-354-6333.

Kaslo GuitarFest 2015 Te third annual Kaslo GuitarFest took place
in Kaslo
August 17 – 22. Tis six day event welcomed seventeen classical
guitar players from Lethbridge, Sawyer OR, the lower mainland, and
the west Kootenays. Te faculty was let by Daniel Bolshoy who
teaches at UBC and the Vancouver Symphony School of Music, and by
Marc ei- cholz from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Additional faculty included Nelson’s Rita Deane and Luis Medina and
Alec Pearson, both from Vancouver.
Kaslo GuitarFest offers master classes, private lessons, workshops,
and performance opportunities for guitar- ists of all ages. Just
about everyone played in the Guitar Orchestra, and there were two
quartets that prepared pieces for the nal concert. Our youngest
participant this year was an eleven year old from North Vancouver
and the oldest, a local septuagenarian. Tere were three pub- lic
concerts during the week which were well attended by local music
buffs and visitors.
Te hub of activity was the Heritage Hall at St. Andrew’s United
Church, and concerts were held in the sanctu-
ary. Some classes spilled over into the Teatre and stu- dio spaces
in the Langham Cultural Centre. Out of town participants were
accommodated at the Kaslo Hotel, the Kaslo Motel, the municipal
camp ground and a variety of B&Bs. Tey patronized most of the
restaurants in town as well as several retail stores. Several
younger students and some faculty were billeted with local
families.
Kaslo GuitarFest was supported this year by the Vil- lage of Kaslo,
Columbia Basin rust, RDCK, the Colum- bia Kootenay Cultlural
Alliance and a handful of private donors who contributed bursary
funds.
Tere will be a Kaslo GuitarFest in 2016. Watch for dates and
details on our website at kasloguitarfest.com

FOMO Or Fear Of Missing Out FOMO or “Fear o Missing Out” is a
un social media
term, but when it comes to pressures on the wallet during
back-to-school time, FOMO looms large or both students and parents
– but in a much different way. For students, it’s the ear o missing
out on trips or activities with their riends. For parents, it’s
making sure their children don’t miss out on making good decisions.
So how are these inter- ests balanced?
“With back-to-school approaching, it is a good timeor each party to
have a conversation about needs versus wants,” says Mandy Mail,
director o student banking at RBC Royal Bank. “FOMO has very real
effects on student budgets, but setting priorities can mean smart
choices and great results.”
Mandy offers the ollowing tips to help students meet both the needs
and wants:
• Make a list – Jot down all o your needs such as books, ood, and
transportation plus the sociated costs. Separately, create a column
or ‘wants’ like clothing, trips, or a new
computer. Pick a ew items on the wants list that t into your budget
and create a savings plan to tackle others.
• Evaluate your choices – I you’re considering a trip over spring
break that maybe doesn’t quite t the budget, weigh both sides o the
equation and make a decision that ts with your current and uture
needs.
• Shop smart – I you’re on a budget, one way to avoid missing out
is comparing prices. You may even be able to add in another want to
your wish list. Shop responsibly and buy based on need, not just
want.
• Get the most out o your credit card – Find a credit card that
