The Great Camrose OutdoorsThe City of Camrose takes pride in our exceptional surroundings and extensive outdoor spaces and trails.

Camrose is fortunate to have tremendous natural spaces throughout our beautiful city. A variety of developed green space areas are thoughtfully placed throughout the community, allowing residents and visitors of all ages to enjoy many exciting activities during all four seasons. Natural corridors provide a picturesque backdrop for the city’s Urban Park System – over 30 km of interconnected, paved, multi-use trails and many other shale passages for running or walking.

The area oers the opportunity to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature as the trails oer an outstanding natural setting for hikers and mountain bikers. A variety of wildlife species inhabit the area.

Playgrounds connected to the trail system provide play spaces and structures for families throughout various neighbourhoods in the city. An o-leash area provides space for dog owners to allow their pets to move about freely for exercise and socialization with other dogs and people.

An early objective of the Camrose Urban Parks Committee was to ensure that the urban park development would provide a year-round facility. It was decided that the heart of the park would be adjacent to Mirror Lake, already the site of numerous summer and winter activities. The location is the scene of people busy enjoying themselves in all kinds of weather.

People bring their children to the play area from all parts of the city and a steady parade of tourists seeking directions and information all make Mirror Lake Park a vibrant, exciting place to be!

Developed during Alberta’s Jubilee celebrations, Jubilee Park is the city’s main family and group picnic area. The urban park program has enhanced the park with washrooms, a children’s playground and some upgrading of the picnic shelters and utility services.

Stoney Creek Park is a natural area running from 44 Avenue south to the city limits. The area oers a nature playground and day use area as well as the opportunity to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature as the trails oer an outstanding natural setting for walkers, skiers, runners and bikers. Many wild animals inhabit the area, and the park oers the opportunity to observe the habitat and lifestyle of many dierent birds and animals. The area is well known internationally for its ski facilities. All ski disciplines are accommodated in the park and the cross country/biathlon trail system is of world-class caliber.

Sports and Recreation FacilitiesThere is a wide range of recreational facilities, activities, events and opportunities to choose from in Camrose.

From a ski hill to cross country trails, curling rink, biathlon track, tennis courts, ball diamonds, running tracks, paved walking paths, three ice arenas, indoor field house, 18-hole golf course, and much more – Camrose is an eclectic community with lots to oer.

Early in the planning of the urban park, the Chamber of Commerce became a partner of the city in the planning and development of the Tourist Information Centre. In need of oce space, the Chamber contributed to the capital costs of the centre and agreed to operate the facility in return for oce space. The facility houses a series of interpretive panels outlining features of the urban park and some historical highlights of the city. Prominent in its location along the highway, the centre regularly provides visitors with their first contact with Camrose.

A group of interested citizens organized the funding and construction of a brick wall sculpture attached to the Bill Fowler Centre. The Jim Marshall masterpiece depicts the plants and wildlife native to this area and is constructed from a special red brick developed specifically for this project. This particular red brick is now known as Mirror Lake Red.

The wall, an outstanding example of artistic accomplishment, has become a tourist attraction.

Rudy Swanson Recreation ParkConveniently located in the centre of the community, Rudy Swanson Recreation Park is where Camrose residents participate in many recreation and leisure pursuits. Situated along 53rd Street south of 48th Avenue (Highway 13), it is close to several schools, and is easily accessed by visitors via major arterial roads running through the city.

Rudy Swanson Recreation Park is home to several outdoor facilities including Kin Park Ball Diamonds, soccer pitches, tennis courts, basketball courts, beach volleyball courts, shale walking trails, a water spray park, and a concrete skateboard park.

Designed with the direct input of local boarders and consisting of a variety of bowls, rails, ramps, pipes, stairs, and other features, the skateboard park was designed so that novice and experienced boarders alike will find an area to meet their needs. The skateboard park is conveniently located immediately to the north of the Community Centre at 4516-54 Street, on the Rudy Swanson Recreation Park grounds.

Aquatic CentreNew Pool and

construction, with completion

scheduled for August 2020.

Arenas andCurling RinkCamrose is pleased to have a state-of-the-art sports complex which opened its doors in September 2007 and is located at 4512-53 Street (in Rudy Swanson Recreation Park). The facility features two regulation-size ice surfaces with EnCana Arena serving as the primary event facility. The secondary facility is Border Paving Arena. The main corridor serves as a connecting link between the two pre-existing facilities: the Recreation Centre (Max McLean Arena and the Curling Rink) and the Aquatic Centre. The Centre includes a trio of meeting room facilities available in several configurations to meet the needs of almost any community organization, large or small.

Community Centre and Field HouseThe Community Centre is a large green and white stand-alone building located at the corner of 54th Street and 45th Avenue on the grounds of Rudy Swanson Recreation Park. The Community Centre houses a wide variety of dierent programs, organizations, and initiatives. The Field House, added to the centre in 2002, includes a main 180’ x 80’ space featuring a rubberized multi-sport floor.

The second level provides seating for 250 spectators as well as a three-lane rubberized running/walking track for fitness enthusiasts to get their daily walk/run regardless of the weather conditions. Track passes for both the Encana Arena and Field House are available for purchase at the Community Services oce.

With much of the Urban Park Trail System being situated through a water corridor, users get the opportunity to interface with abundant water fowl and a wide range of wildlife. Care should be taken when trail users come in close proximity. They are wild creatures and can be unpredictable but, if care is taken, they provide users the opportunity to experience nature firsthand. Since they experience urbanization, some of the wildlife appear tame, but we discourage feeding or attempting to get too close. Care should be taken when walking pets. Pets should be on a leash and under control in the event that the wild animal feels endangered.

Heritage Pointsof InterestIn celebration of the Camrose Chamber of Commerce 100th Anniversary – Legacy Initiative, plaques have been placed at various locations along the trail system to give users an historical experience as it pertains to the development of City of Camrose.

Urban Park Trails –A winter outdoor experience!Users of the trail system can enjoy paved trails throughout the year. When accessing trails that provide access to various outdoor winter activities such as skating facilities, toboggan hills, parks, playgrounds and picnic sites, please follow the safety and directional signage provided. There are various ski trail intersections. Please use only the paved trails for walking and avoid walking on ski trails. Be on the lookout for skiers crossing the trails and also for vehicle trac as many of our trails connect with roadways.

During the fall, winter and spring, City sta provide snow removal, de-icing, garbage collection and other required maintenance based on a priority system. This allows users year-round enjoyment, but make sure you dress for the conditions. Proper footwear should be worn since there may be slippery areas as a result of the landscape. Watch for maintenance equipment and, due to the conditions and frequency of service, there can be a variety of dierent equipment needs.

Please pick up after your pet and use the garbage receptacles provided to keep our trail system clean.
