Beaver Valley May Days

A fairly good crowd was on hand braving threatening skies Saturday but no rain fell to dampen the enthusiasm for the annual Beaver Valley May Days parade and celebration at Haines Park. The parade featured approxi-mately two dozen floats and lasted almost half an hour. Haines park was a busy site as festival goers enjoyed kids baseball games and adult slow pitch on the fields and also had the opportunity to sample the wares of a number of food vendors, festival gardens, and local crafts people. Reservations were necessary because of the demand for the train rides out to view Beaver Falls, with the adults apparently enjoy-ing the experience as much as the children.

A tractor-trailer unit hauling a large excavator flipped onto its side Monday morning shortly before 7 a.m., five kilo-metres east of Christina Lake on Highway 3.

“The excavator didn’t come loose from the trailer ... however, laying on its side, (the tractor, trailer and excavator) block(ed) one lane of traffic,” said Grand Forks RCMP’s Staff Sgt. Jim Harrison.

“We strongly believe that speed and perhaps a mechanical condition might be involved as a cause of the accident,” he said. “The tractor trailer was owned and operated by Sims Excavating out of Castlegar.”

Emcon Services attended the scene to direct single alternating traffic around the accident. The rollover was cleared and both lanes of traffic were opened up along Highway 3 at approximately 11 a.m.

The RCMP’s investigation was assist-ed by the Ministry of Transportations Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident and the driver was unharmed.

A new report on the Johnsons Landing landslide recommends restrictions on further development in the community and that resi-dents who choose to still live there understand the risk.

The Regional District of Central Kootenay commis-sioned the risk assessment report, released to the pub-lic yesterday, to understand what caused the massive landslide in July 2012, how likely such an event is to occur again and what can be done to reduce risk to residents.

Geotechnical analysis of the landslide site revealed that record rainfall and the late snowmelt last spring had saturated soils on the slope above the community and triggered the landslide. An event of similar size has not occurred in the area since the glaciers receded some 12,000 years ago.

The landslide killed four people and destroyed five homes. One other home was damaged.

In assessing the ongoing risk to residents, the report considers the likelihood of death from future land-slides. The probabilities assume that a resident is in their home when the event occurs.

For the people living at four properties in the mod-erate hazard zone, there is a 1:1,000 to 1:10,000 per year chance of dying in a landslide. In other words, they’re more likely to die in a landslide this year than in a car accident, which is con-sidered a 1:11,000 risk per year according to Statistics Canada.

In the high hazard area of Johnsons Landing, where there are nine homes, the risk is 1:100 to 1:1,000 per year, meaning occupants in those homes would be more likely to die in a land-slide than all other causes

combined (Statistics Canada puts the risk of death by any cause —health, accident, etc.  at 1:1,000 per year for people over the age of 30).

Finally, there are five properties in the very high hazard area where the chance of dying in a land-slide is 1:10 to 1:100.

“The quantitative risk analysis indicates the risk to some individuals living on the Johnsons Landing bench is unacceptable (higher than typical published accept-ability criteria),” the report says, noting typically any-thing higher than 1:10,000 is considered unacceptable.

Constructing a berm along the edge of the creek may help reduce the risk, as could landslide monitor-ing programs and teaching residents to recognize the early warning signs of slope instability.

The report made eight recommendations including restricting development and establishing a monitoring

system.In a statement to media,

RDCK  general manager of corporate administration Dawn Attorp said people liv-ing in the highest hazard zones have been informed of that fact.

“They understand the level of risk to their particu-lar properties and to them-selves,” she said.

There are currently still 16 residents whose houses were either damaged beyond use, have no access to their house, or are still under evacuation order.

“It’s going to take some time for the RDCK to fully review all recommendations and to develop any possible land-use restrictions based on results from the report,” she said.

“We still have a consider-able process ahead of us before we can lift the evacu-ation order for the landslide area and take the next steps in supporting the commun-ity in its recovery.”

FROM PAGE 1“We need money for a healthy,

happy and sustainable community,” said Grieve.

“That means you don’t just get to keep what you have, you have money for future development and growth as well.”

In a press release issued on Monday, the mayors of Fruitvale and Montrose shared their con-cerns.

“The concentration of assess-ment is not in the interest of our greater community,” said Fruitvale Mayor Patricia Cecchini.

“We need to be moving away from a situation where assessment and the benefits thereof, are con-centrated in one community.”

Montrose Mayor Joe Danchuk called for better cooperation between communities.

“We need to be working together not building barriers to meaning-ful and mutually beneficial cooper-ation.

“I am afraid this boundary expansion proposal builds another barrier.”

John MacLean, chief administra-tive officer for the regional district, said that a formalized procedure on boundary expansion will be used by the province, but the next step will be for the City of Trail present its

interests to the province.“This is a matter of process,” he

said.“Once the city formalizes the

boundary expansion with the prov-ince, the regional district will be asked to outline the impact that expansion will have on regional servi-ces to the area,” explained MacLean. “We will go through a process of identifying the financial impact it will have on our services.

“From the regional district’s per-spective, our responsibility is to respond and protect the interest of our taxpayers within the service area and ensure that we can con-tinue to offer services.”

Grieve said that Beaver Valley residents are questioning, “why I sold the farm and they didn’t get a chance to vote.

“It is important for people to understand the process and that this is just a preliminary study,” she explained.

Grieve said that since the major-ity property owner (Teck) and the City of Trail have reached their own agreement, an official study will now follow.

“When we met with Minister Bill Bennett last fall he assured us that the Beaver Valley will remain whole or this deal wouldn’t move forward,” she said.

LeaderIt looks like Surrey

may be heading for a byelection to fill the seat of Coun. Marvin Hunt, who just became the Liberal MLA-elect for Surrey Panorama.

Hunt had planned to serve as MLA while remaining on Surrey council until Jan. 1, 2014 to avoid a pricey byelection, which could cost between $600,000 and $800,000, according to city staff.

B.C. Premier Christy Clark is urging him to take an unpaid leave of

absence.However, Hunt

doesn’t have support of his colleagues to make that move.

After 23 years on city council, Hunt was elected May 14 as the Liberal MLA for Surrey-Panorama.

He told The Leader before the election he planned to do both jobs, while donating his council pay to a charity.

Now Hunt said he had dismissed the notion of doing both jobs and was pursu-ing the leave, which requires the ascent of council.

However, as of Friday, he didn’t have the votes for it to pass.

A straw poll con-ducted by The Leader indicates that the majority of council is against him taking a leave of absence.

“I think if he’s not going to be attending meetings, he should reconsider his pos-ition,” Coun. Judy Villeneuve said Friday.

Steele said Hunt will be sorely missed on council, but pre-fers a byelection to leaving his seat vacant for a protracted per-iod.

Hepner said it’s important to fill Hunt’s seat as soon as possible.

“I would rather see the public choose their representative,” Hepner said. “I under-stand that is expen-sive to a city, but I can tell you right now we have products of bye-lections sitting on our council,” referring to Steele, who took a seat in 1998, when Pam Lewin resigned.

VICTORIA – Elections BC officials started counting 180,000 absentee ballots Monday, an unusually high number that could be enough to change the result of some closer contests from the May 14 provincial vote.

Final results will be known by Wednesday.A recount is also underway in the closest of

the 85 constituency elections, Saanich North and the Islands. The NDP’s Gary Holman led after initial counting with 9,676 votes, 50 more than B.C. Liberal candidate Stephen Roberts. Adam Olsen of the B.C. Green Party was a close third with 9,294 votes.

Another closely watched constituency is Coquitlam-Maillardville, where B.C. Liberal Steve Kim led with 9,044 in preliminary results. The

NDP’s Selena Robertson was 105 votes behind after early results in the final count, which includes absentee ballots.

Premier Christy Clark has indicated she will wait until the final count is complete before deciding where to seek a seat in a by-election. The NDP’s David Eby finished 785 votes ahead of Clark in election-night returns for Vancouver-Point Grey, a result unlikely to be overturned by the addition of late ballots to the total.

Elections BC officials say the 180,000 absentee ballots doubles the number received in 2009. The final count include votes cast by people outside their home constituencies. It also incorporates mail-in votes and special polling places set up at hospitals, isolated communities and logging or fishing camps.

Final count begins on B.C. election

OTTAWA - A hard-hitting Federal Court ruling on fraudulent robocalls during the 2011 election should be setting off alarm bells in Parliament, says the former head of Elections Canada.

Judge Richard Mosley ruled last Thursday that fraud did take place “in rid-ings across the coun-try,” although he failed to overturn results in six contested ridings in a civil case bank-rolled by the Council of Canadians.

Mosley found no evidence that Conservative candi-dates or officials were involved in the fraud, but he did point fin-gers.

J e a n - P i e r r e Kingsley, who spent almost 17 years as Canada’s chief elec-toral officer, said in an interview Monday that Mosley’s unequivocal finding of fraud was “really surprising.”

“What is equally surprising is that he said that fraud occurred through the use, by person or per-sons unknown, of the Conservative party databank. That’s where the bells go off.”

It’s against that clanging alarm that Marc Mayrand, Kingsley’s successor at Elections Canada, appears Tuesday before the House of Commons procedure and House affairs committee to make the case for urgent reforms to the Elections Act.

Mayrand wants tighter reporting rules on automated phone calls during election campaigns, penal-ties for impersonat-ing election officials, stronger investigative powers and more pro-tections for voter pri-vacy.

The Harper gov-ernment has long promised reforms, but suddenly delayed the legislation in mid-April

on the day it was to be introduced, citing unspecified concerns.

Mayrand says time is tight if the changes are to be fully in place before the next federal election in autumn 2015.

The Federal Court ruling, said Kingsley, “certainly should bolster his case with Parliament.”

The judgment, hailed as a victory by the Conservative party and the Council of Canadians alike, con-cluded that the “most likely source of the information used to make the misleading phone calls was the CIMS database main-tained and controlled by the (Conservative Party of Canada), accessed for that pur-pose by a person or persons unknown to this court.”

Mosley then stated there was “no evidence to indicate that the use of the CIMS database in this manner was

approved or condoned by the (party).”

“Rather, the evi-dence points to elabor-ate efforts to conceal the identity of those accessing the database and arranging for the calls to be made.”

So far, only Michael Sona, a jun-ior Conservative campaign worker in Guelph, Ont., has been charged under the Elections Act in relation to fraudulent robocalls.

Kingsley suggested the judgment itself is not particularly helpful to investigators with the Commissioner of Canada Elections. They are still trying to trace hundreds of verified complaints of phone calls that the court found were designed to suppress the vote.

“It would be a lot more helpful if they knew who had access to the databank. Who had authorized access?” said Kingsley.

“It would be much more helpful if they had an inkling from the Conservative party that there was indeed someone from outside who broke in. There are ways of detecting these things, if this is what occurred.”

If the government sees any urgency to the Federal Court’s finding that its party database was used to commit fraud, it has not said so.

Tim Uppal, Stephen Harper’s minister for democratic reform, told the Commons on Monday that chan-ges to the Elections Act will be made “in the not-too-distant future.” Uppal, and Conservative par-liamentary secre-tary Pierre Poilievre, did not once address the court’s finding that the party data-base was used in the fraud, despite repeated opposition questions on the matter.

Quebec municipality has won the right to begin council meet-ings with a prayer, fol-lowing a high-profile

case that became part of the province’s emo-tionally charged iden-tity debates.

The provin-cial Court of Appeal reversed the decision

of a lower tribunal in the case of Saguenay, Que. It overturned the prayer ban in a decision made public Monday, saying that reciting a prayer does

not violate the reli-gious neutrality of the city.

In 2011, Quebec’s human-rights tribunal had issued a ruling to stop the prayers.

OPINION

BCTF digs in for endless war with governmentLike those Japanese

soldiers who didn’t hear about the end of World War II,

the militant fringe that controls the B.C. Teachers’ Federation is digging in for endless battle against the B.C. government.

Their nemesis, Premier Christy Clark, reiterated last week that seeking a 10-year agreement with the BCTF is a top prior-ity when the legislature is recalled this summer.

The current one-year truce ends June 30. The BCTF grudgingly agreed to that extension last year, then ran TV ads calling for an NDP government that promised concessions and union bosses on both sides of the negotiating table.

“You know, I may be a lame duck,” outgoing BCTF president Susan Lambert crowed to cheer-ing classroom-warfare radicals at the union’s convention in March, “but I think Christy’s goose is cooked.”

We’ll never know how much this sort of gloat-ing contributed to the epic collapse of the NDP, champion of public sector union members whose pay and benefits make them the new upper class.

But I can tell you the prospects for sparing chil-dren from this ideological warfare are not good.

Last week the B.C. Court of Appeal hand-ed down an ivory-tower decision that upheld the “right” of teachers to bring their union demands into the classroom in the form of posters, buttons and black armbands that to some self-absorbed teach-ers symbolize the “death” of education.

During the election campaign, The Globe and Mail carried a story on one of those mock elections held in schools around the province. An elementary-level student was quoted as saying she voted against the B.C. Liberals because Clark “caused a teachers’ strike.”

If this kid was talking about the most recent strike, I wonder where she got that idea.

In a negotiating per-formance that was appal-ling even by BCTF stan-dards, Lambert and her team conducted months of disruptive work-to-rule action before they could even articulate a wage and benefit demand. When they finally did, it was outrageously out of touch with reality.

An indication of how the union’s ruling class wants to conduct itself

in the classroom can be found in the latest issue of the BCTF newsletter to its members. Joanna Larson, president of the Prince Rupert union local, con-tributes an article head-lined: “What kind of cit-izen do we hope to gradu-ate from our K-12 public schools?”

Larson first quotes the education ministry’s cur-rent goals.

They include preparing citizens who are “creative, flexible, self-motivated, and who have a positive self-image.” Another goal is citizens who are “skilled and who can contribute to society generally, includ-ing the world of work.”

Larson then mocks these goals, as follows:

“Essentially, the Ministry of Education has a vision of citizens who will maintain the status quo, not rock the boat, and participate on a superficial level in aspects of political and societal change. It doesn’t chal-lenge individuals to take

direct action against exploitation, marginaliza-tion and violence.”

In case you missed the political message, Larson later asserts: “The edu-cated citizens we graduate from our schools cannot just be content to wear a pink shirt once a year…. Educated, engaged cit-izens must be willing to take direct action to change and shape our society for the better.”

What is this ghastly “status quo” that must be challenged by “direct action”? In these campus-radical screeds, the final answer is generally the same: capitalism.

This call to arms is a blend of the NDP election platform and a rant from the Occupy Vancouver squat of a couple of years ago.

It’s no wonder we hear of students making BCTF picket signs in art class.

LETTERS & OPINION

Perhaps it’s a peaceful world after allImagine for a

moment that all the wars of the world have come

to a peaceful conclu-sion. Most violent crime against people and property has also been eradicated. The worst outbreak of vio-lence in the world in the past 24 hours has been a fight in a bar in Irkutsk, Russia.

What item do you think will lead the international news for the next 12 hours, or however long it takes until something fresh-er come along? The bar fight in Irkutsk, of course. “If it bleeds, it leads,” says the axiom, and the world’s media follow it slavishly, so they will always give you the impres-sion that the world is drowning in violence. It is not – but people think it is.

Stop people at ran-dom and ask them how many wars they think are going on in the world right now. Most people would guess around a dozen, although they wouldn’t be able to name them. The right answer is two, and one of them, Afghanistan, is probably approach-

ing its end. There are close to

200 independent coun-tries in the world, and only one in a hundred is currently at war. They are both primar-ily civil wars, although there is some foreign involvement in each case.

The Syrian civil war is extremely destructive of lives and property, the war in Afghanistan less so, and in both cases the fighting occasionally slops over their bor-ders, but that’s it.

There are a num-ber of other countries where there is a lower level of civil con-flict: the Democratic Republic of Congo, for example, or Colombia (although the latter is now engaged in peace talks to end the fifty-year conflict between the state and the FARC

guerillas). But the Sri Lankan civil war is over, the Iraqi civil war is at least over for the moment, and the many little wars of West Africa are all over.

There is terrorism in various places, like Boko Haram’s bizarre campaign to impose Islamic law on Nigeria (where only half the population is Muslim), the Pakistani Taliban’s campaign of mur-der against their Shia fellow-citizens, and the Naxalites’ long and for-lorn struggle to make a Communist revolu-tion in India. All nasty, but none of them real wars.

So that’s it: two real wars, and a clut-ter of lesser conflicts that really do not merit the term. In a world of seven billion people, only a few hundred million have even the slightest experience of organized violence for political ends. Why, then, do so many people think that the world is still overrun by war?

The media is partly to blame, but they are also manipulated by various governments that raise the spectre of war for their own

ends. Wars that have not happened and are never likely to fill the imaginations of the public: a war in Korea, a US and/or Israeli attack on Iran, Western or Israeli intervention in Syria, a war between China and South-East Asian countries over islands in the South China Sea, a US-Chinese con-flict in the Pacific, and on and on.

A lot of people, some in uniform and some not, make a liv-ing off these mostly phantom fears, and they contribute to the general impression that the world is still a place where war, how-ever deplorable, is the normal state of affairs. It is not. We live in an era where, for the first time in history, no great power genu-inely fears attack by any other, and where the number of actual wars can be counted on the fingers of one badly mutilated hand.

Almost 90 million people died in the world wars and other big wars of the first half of the 20th century, out of a world popula-tion that was one-third of what it is now. In

the second half of the century the death toll dropped steeply to 25 million or so, most of whom died in colonial independence wars and civil wars.

And so far, in the 21st century, the total

is less than one mil-lion people killed in war. What we have on our hands here is a miraculous and mostly unsung success story. There will doubtless be more wars, but they may be small and

infrequent. We are obviously doing some-thing right. We should figure out what it is, and do more of it.

An editorial from the Toronto Star

When Parliament votes on the omnibus federal budget bill today, MPs will be dealing with legislation that’s shorter, less far-reaching and in many ways more innocuous than its recent forerunners. But that’s not say-ing much.

At 111 pages, Bill C-60 is dwarfed by its immediate pre-decessor, the 443-page 2012 budget implementation bill, which reshaped Canadian policy in ways that, by virtue of its length and diversity, par-liamentarians could not have understood when they passed it. Yet the two budget bills have at least one unsettling com-monality. Each amends or abol-ishes dozens of varied pieces of legislation, many of which, con-trary to the purpose of budget bills, are non-fiscal in nature.

That means the House of Commons finance commit-tee is charged with examining parts of the bill on which it has no expertise. In the case of Bill C-60, the committee was given only four days to hear expert testimony on the con-sequences of the legislation - an impossibly tight time-frame in which to do a job already beyond its competency. This is

government by what Liberal MP Scott Brison calls “kitchen-sink committee,” and it’s what NDP Finance critic Peggy Nash rightly calls “a sham.”

Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government is used to these criticisms. At this time last year, under pressure from opposition parties and pundits of every political stripe, the Conservatives agreed to hive off some parts of the budget bill and submit them to five relevant committees. The same has been done with Bill C-60. That’s a good first check on the power of the omnibus tool, but it’s not nearly enough.

Take the case of the latest bill’s most controversial meas-ures - unprecedented provisions that will allow the government to intervene in the collective bargaining and executive salary negotiations of more than 40 Crown corporations.

Already, government unions are threatening a constitution-al court challenge and some 173,000 concerned Canadians have signed a petition to pro-tect the independence of our public broadcaster.

Yet, the measures won’t be studied by the human resources committee or the heritage com-mittee or any other commit-

tee with relevant expertise. And because this particular amend-ment is near the end of the bill, it was given especially short shrift in the finance commit-tee’s harried hearings.

Clearly this is cause for con-cern. In the absence of proper parliamentary scrutiny, our sys-tem can’t work. The opposition cannot alert Canadians to the risks of the government’s agen-da and the government can’t strengthen legislation through study and feedback.

Less than two decades ago, Stephen Harper, then a Reform MP, asked that a Liberal omni-bus budget be thrown out on a point of order.

He argued that the bill should have been broken up and its parts submitted to the relevant committees. He wor-ried the budget was “so diverse that a single vote on the content would put members in conflict with their own principles.” He was right - and that bill was just 20 pages long.

That we now think of a railroaded 100-page omnibus budget as a step in the right direction is an indication of how far afield we’ve been taken. We ought to drastically change course, if only so we can know where we’re going.

Budget bill shorter but no sweeter

At the Overwaitea Food Group, we’re very proud of our longstanding commitment to investing in the health of kids and their fami-lies. We’re grateful to everyone who supports us in this effort. Our team members, customers and suppliers have all played a key role in our fundraising success over the years. We’ve been supporting BC Children’s Hospital for more than two decades, and we’ve raised millions of dollars in support of capital improvement projects, important research initiatives and advocacy programs designed to help keep our kids safe by reducing prevent-able injuries. In 2007, we made a $20 million pledge to support Child Health BC, an initiative of BC Children’s Hospital that helps get kids in BC get the care they need, closer to home. Since then, we’ve raised more than $10.7 million toward our goal, and Child Health BC has been able to put this concept into action in a number of communities throughout BC.We are grateful for the amazing commitment and fund raising efforts driven by OFG team members who encourage the generosity of our customers and suppliers.

on Sunday, June 2The 26th annual BC Children’s Hospital’s Miracle

Weekend is a two-day celebration that showcases the best of BC Children’s Hospital: patients, their families,

caregivers and supporters who come from every corner of BC. BC Children’s Hospital receives over

200,000 visits from patients from across the province every year. Donations help the hospital deliver the

best in care every day, and are helping to prepare for the future by supporting the construction of a new BC Children’s Hospital and better access to care for

children in or close to their home communities. Please support BC Children’s Hospital.

Brooke Malakoff has made countless trips to BC Children’s Hospital since she was di-agnosed with cancer in 2011. The 18-year-old Fernie resident has nothing but praise for the hospital and the doctors and nurses who have cared for her, but she’s always happy when she doesn’t have to travel any further than Cranbrook for care.“They have a little oncology unit in Cran-brook,” she says. “I go there once a month for about three days now. It’s much more spiritually uplifting to be at home, and it’s nice to be closer to my friends and family. Just being able to sleep in your own bed makes all the difference in the world.”Fortunately, caregivers at BC Children’s Hospital know it is easier on children and their families when they can receive care closer to home. With this in mind, the hospital supported the creation of Child Health BC, an initiative aimed at ensuring all BC children have access to a consistent standard of specialized care, ideally close to home.“It’s always good news to me when a young person is able to receive specialized care close to home,” says Dr. Maureen O’Donnell, executive direc-tor of Child Health BC. “That is exactly what we’re looking for.”In the near future, children and youth in the Kootenay will benefit from an even closer link. Equipment

purchased by Child Health BC is being installed at the Kootenay Child Develop-ment Centre that will allow it to operate as a “telehealth” centre – a direct connection to BC Children’s Hospital via an audio-visual link.Child Health BC’s activities took off after Overwaitea Food Group became the lead benefactor with a pledge of $20 million in support in 2007. TELUS and Scotiabank later made gifts of $5 million and $1 million, respec-tively. This support had an immediate impact, says O’Donnell. Pediatric clinics established with Child Health BC’s support in Nanaimo and Prince George have thousands of patient visits annually; additional travelling clinics are staffed by BC Children’s caregivers in communities across the province; and over 1,000 health professionals have participat-

ed in Child Health BC’s workshops. O’Donnell credits Overwaitea

Food Group’s donation with Child Health BC’s grow-

ing reach across the province, noting that it’s a perfect fit for an organization with a

presence in so many BC communities. Over-waitea Food Group President Darrell

Jones agrees.“We’re committed

to the health and wellness of kids and

families in BC,” says Jones. “We’ve been

proud to support BC Children’s Hospital for more than two decades – and with the help of our communities, we’ve contrib-uted millions of dollars toward hospital improvement projects, advocacy programs and important research initiatives. We’re grateful for the amazing support of our

local communities, team members, customers and supplier partners who have all played a key role in making this fundraising success

possible.”Child Health BC is part of a larger transformation in the way BC’s children receive care, says Larry Gold, president of BC Children’s Hospital and Sunny Hill Health Centre for

Children. The transformation also includes the construction of a new BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver. “We want to ensure children have access to a consistent standard of care, whether they live in Smithers, Campbell River or Castlegar; and there will always be children who need care that’s only available in a children’s hospital,” says Gold.

BC Children’s Hospital Foundation has raised close to $170 million, including Overwaitea Food Group’s gift and $25 million from Teck Resources Limited, in its $200-million capital campaign to support construction of the new hospital and Child Health BC.Gold says that the new hospital, which will open in 2018, will be family-friendly, making it easier for families from outside the Lower Mainland to remain with their children. Beyond the money being raised for the new hospital and Child Health BC, Gold says the hospital also counts on donations of about $14 million a year to support re-search, equipment purchases and training. On June 1 and 2 BC Children’s Hospital Foundation will hold its annual Miracle Weekend celebration on Global BC, to raise the millions the hospital needs to cover its urgent annual needs. “Every year people from across the prov-ince make donations in support of the hos-pital and it makes a huge difference,” says Gold. “Brooke Malakoff is proof of that.”Brooke’s family has a direct connection to Child Health BC’s biggest supporter. Brooke has worked at the Overwaitea in Fernie and her stepfather George Torresani manages the meat and deli department. The store’s annual fundraising programs in support of BC Children’s have taken on special meaning, but Brooke and her family have always been keen to help their com-munity.“I volunteer as much as I can and anywhere I can,” she says. “Anything I can do to give back.”

Orioles baseball team found their  groove on Sunday as they ral-lied to split their four-game series  with the Kelowna Jays in Pacific International League play on the weekend.

After scoring just one run in its first two matches - 4-1 and 1-0 losses to the Jays on Saturday - the Orioles bats came alive in the last two games Sunday, scoring a come-from-behind 5-3 victory in the first match of the doubleheader, and an 8-4 win in the second game.

“I was happy with all four games,” said O’s coach David Colquhoun. “I think we were in all four games, we just never got the hits we needed in the first two games but we got them in the third and fourth games.”

Hitting has been the Achilles’ heal of the Orioles early in the season, managing just seven runs in its first five games, the O’s nearly doubled that offensive output in its two games on Sunday.

“We can play with any team in the league, I mean we just have to hit the ball. Our defence is always pretty good, and our pitching is usually pretty good, so if we have those two things, and we hit the ball we got a chance, and like I said, ‘The first two games it just didn’t happen.’”

In the opening match of the double-bill Sunday, it looked to be the same story as the Jays jumped

into a 3-1 lead. But in the fourth frame, the Orioles rallied to score three in the inning to go up 4-3.

Darrin Kissock stroked a one out double into right-centre and scored on a Brady Glover single to narrow the defi-cit to 3-2. Trail’s Joel Graf and Jeff Sidey would walk, setting up

Scott Davidson as he stepped up and blasted a double into the gap in left-centre, scoring both Graf and Glover to give the O’s the 4-3 lead.

It was the second time in as many weeks that Davidson drove home the winning run, as he cashed in Dallas Calvin with a walk-off single in the O’s 3-2 victory over the Kamloops Sun Devils the previous Sunday.

Davidson, 18, is one of the youthful addi-tions to the Orioles. A skilled center fielder

and pitcher, his glove, and arm have paid dividends in the early going, and now his bat is starting to catch up.

“I’ve been kind of struggling, so it kind of came out of nowhere,” said Davidson. “I was on that pitcher. I was seeing his fastball good, just kind of got one in my zone and jumped on it.”

The Orioles’ Joey Underwood would score the insurance marker in the top of the seventh, leading off with a double down the third-base line, and

advancing on a Kissock sac fly before scoring on a passed ball.

Kissock had a gutsy performance on the mound, playing injured and going the distance, while giv-ing the Orioles their second victory of the season on five hits and three strikeouts. Davidson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Jim Maniago was 1-for-2 with two walks.

In the final match of the four-game ser-ies, the Orioles kept the ball rolling. Kyle Mace did it all with his arm and bat as he threw seven strong innings and belted a two-run home run to pace the Orioles to an 8-4 victory.

“I think when I am pitching it makes me stop thinking about hitting and I just go up and swing the bat,” said Mace.

Mace, along with catcher Kyle Paulsen, kept the Jays’ hit-ters off balance with a steady mix of fast-balls, change-ups, and split finger fastballs, and when he did get in trouble, he was able to pitch out of jams.

“That’s when you really got to bear down and concentrate a little harder, you put what’s left in the tank into it.”

Trail struck first when Davidson lined a single into centre scor-ing Paulsen to take a 1-0 lead in the third inning.

Mace then helped his own cause in the fourth. With Joey Underwood getting a free pass to lead off the inning, Mace then stepped up and yanked an 0-1 pitch over the right-field fence to make it 3-0 O’s, while hitting his league-leading second home run and fifth RBI of the season.

B Y T I M E S C O R R E S P O N D E N TThe McKay brothers, Tyler and Braden,

carded top scores on the Zone 1 junior golf tour at the Castlegar Golf course Saturday, and should be primed to lead the Rossland Secondary School team into the B.C. Single-A high school golf championship at the Birchbank Golf Course today.

The B.C. Single-A high school golf cham-pionship hit the fairways Tuesday afternoon, with the final round going today.

The Rossland Secondary School team, comprised of golfers Tyler and Braden McKay, Brenan Moroney, Wyatte Henderson, and Jeff Ashton, will tee it up against the seven other Zone winners, that include Immaculata, Southridge, Lady Smith, West Point Golf, Selkirk, Nakusp, and Chetwynd.

The starting tee off times are set for 8 a.m. at Birchbank. Tuesday results were unavail-able at press time.

Junior Tour: Braden McKay, from Redstone, returned to the tour in fine form winning the event in just his first appear-ance on the circuit this year after sitting out the last six weeks with a wrist injury. Braden earned a two-stroke victory over Birchbank’s Tyler McKay by posting a 1-over par round of 73, while Tyler came in with a 75 taking the 17- and 18-year-old division.

Carson Arcuri from Granite Point had another solid performance winning the 15- and 16-year-old flight with an 82 and Aiden Browell from Champion Lakes took the 13- and 14-year-old division with an 81.

Birchbank’s Brenan Moroney took second in the 17- and 18-year division and Jeff Ashton, also from Birchbank, was second in the 15-16 year division. New comers to the circuit this year, Brayden Biln and Ely Overennay, both from Castlegar took second and third respect-ively in the 14 and under division.

Emily Ashton, won the female division and she also drained her longest putt of the year.

SASKATOON - A historic season came to an end Sunday as the Portland Winterhawks and Trail’s Joey Baker  fell 6-4 to the Halifax Mooseheads in the final of the MasterCard Memorial Cup at the Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon.

Despite the loss,

it was an unforget-table season for the Winterhawks and interim head coach Travis Green of Castlegar, who won the WHL Championship two weeks ago and set team records in the regular season in points (117) and wins (57), along with a lit-any of individual rec-ords and milestones.

Page 12: Trail Daily Times, May 28, 2013

FROM PAGE 11 Graf would keep

the rally going, reach-ing base on a walk and stealing second then scoring on a throw-ing error from the Jays second baseman to make it 4-0.

The Jays’ Brett Sanguin led off the fifth with a double and would later score on a Jared Johnson single, but Mace would get

the next two batters to pop up to the infield with runners on first and second to stifle the threat.

The Orioles added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth as the Jays’ arms faltered, allowing four runs on five walks, a hit, and an error to make it 8-1.

“Definitely our bats are starting to come

around,” said Mace. “We had a talk about a better approach at the plate before the game and we defin-itely exectued that approach: take some pitches, get your pitch instead of just going up and swinging at their pitch.”

The Jays received a little help from the Orioles in the top of seven scoring three runs on three singles and three Trail errors, before shortstop Underwood would close the game with an unassisted double play.

Mace gave up four runs, one earned, on eight hits and three walks, and collected three strikeouts over seven innings. He also went 1-for-2 at the plate with a home run and a walk, while Paulsen also went 1-for-2.

Paulsen suffered the loss in the open-ing 4-1 game, while Davidson pitched a gem ceding just one hit and three walks, while striking out four in the 1-0 setback.

The Orioles will look to keep the hit parade going when it visits Kelowna for a game against the Jays and a three-game ser-ies versus the Langley Blaze this weekend.

Leisure

Dear Annie: My bullheaded 50-year-old daughter has taken gossip from 32 years ago to make my life a living hell.

I have four grown children. My older daughter called every-one she could think of and told them I molested my son when he was 5. My daugh-ter never checked to see whether it was true. I have never been arrested for this or had charges filed against me. She further told all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren that they should never stop at my home.

I am 74 years old, have trouble breathing and have cancer that is currently in remission. I want to see my family before it’s too late. My daughter called my sis-ter-in-law and told her she will not go to my funeral when I die. I have been denied visits and phone calls from family members for three years. I desper-ately need my family to

visit. -- Sad and LonelyDear Sad: You say

charges were never filed, nor were you arrested, but you haven’t said that you are innocent of the accusation. If the gos-sip is true, we com-pletely understand why your daughter would want everyone to stay away. If it is not true, you need to make it clear to the rest of the family that your daughter is spreading lies. Please ask whether she would be willing to go with you for coun-seling to clear this up and to see whether there is any possibility of reconciling before it is too late.

Dear Annie: I’m one

of two daughters. Both of us have two sons. Long story short, one of my sister’s sons has borrowed thousands of dollars from Grandma, received a nice car and has never paid any money back. The other three boys have never borrowed a penny.

I am the executor of Grandma’s estate and have power of attorney. When something hap-pens to Grandma, I’m in charge. She’s not going to have a mil-lion dollars, but when her estate is eventu-ally divided, I believe it would be perfectly fair to exclude the one grandson. What do you think? -- Trouble in Hubbard

Dear Hubbard: It may be “fair,” but it could estrange you from your sister, not to mention your nephews. What does Grandma think? If she is of sound mind and wants all of her grandsons to receive equal shares, you have an obligation to follow

her wishes. You could discuss with her the option of deducting the money her grandson has already borrowed from whatever is left of his share. You also could give the grand-son an object of senti-mental value in lieu of money, so he doesn’t believe his grandmoth-er forgot about him. Whatever the final decision, please discuss it with your sister as a gesture of good faith and ask her opinion. She may or may not agree with your assess-ment, but at least she won’t be shocked and angry when the time comes.

Dear Annie: I have a couple of thoughts for “Want My Solitude Back,” who assumes these drop-in neigh-bors and relatives are simply intrusive. But they may believe you want company now and then. Most people do. I, too, enjoy solitude, but most of us want it balanced with caring relationships.

Recently, my uncle was found dead in his home. The coroner said he’d been dead at least 10 days. My uncle may have lain on the floor suffering because no one visited him. He had pushed everyone away.

If “Want My

Solitude Back” truly wants to be alone, he can move to a sparsely inhabited rural area far from anyone who may intrude. Or he could stay where he is and stew and complain -- that should get rid of any friends he might have. -- Likes People

Much of the TimeDear Likes: There

is a rather thick line between having no one ever visit and having uninvited guests drop by constantly, espe-cially around meal-time. People need to be respectful of one another.

Leisure

For Wednesday, May 29, 2013 ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A friend might surprise you today, or perhaps some-thing that goes on in a group will catch you off guard. Stay light on your feet, and be prepared to go with the flow. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Someone in a position of authority might throw you a curveball today. If it makes you feel rebellious or angry, don’t quit your day job. (This is fleeting.) GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Travel plans will change or be delayed today. Ditto for schedules regarding higher education and training. However, you might learn something remarkable. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Stay in touch with your bank account, because unpredictable events can occur today that affect shared property, debt, taxes and

insurance matters. Make sure you know what’s going on. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) Partners and close friends might demand more freedom in a relationship today. Or perhaps you’re the one who wants more freedom. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) Computer crashes, fire drills, power outages, staff shortages, canceled appoint-ments and equipment break-downs are some things that will make your day go side-ways. Today’s not a boring day. (Ya think?) LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) This is an accident-prone day for your kids or children you work with, so be aware of this. Romantic partners will have a few scuffles or surprises, because this is an unpredictable day. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Small appliances might break down, or minor break-ages could occur today.

Surprise company might appear at your door, because this is an unpredictable day with anything happening at home or in your personal life. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Be careful, because this is a mildly accident-prone day for you. Pay attention to every-thing you say and do, and be particularly careful walking, jogging and driving.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Keep an eye on your money and your possessions today. You might find money; you might lose money. Your pos-sessions might break or be stolen. Keep your eyes peeled. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) You feel restless, impul-sive and ready to do some-thing at a moment’s notice. Guard against rash speech or actions. Nevertheless, enjoy

your impulsive freedom. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Surprise secrets might be revealed to you today. They could be revealed through dreams or gossip that comes your way or through unex-pected information. YOU BORN TODAY You are committed to making the world a better place and improving the lives of others. You always defend the under-dog. You are often drawn

to high drama and exciting situations. You have a bright intellect and a great sense of humor. Work hard to build or construct something in your year ahead, because your rewards soon will fol-low. Birthdate of: Annette Bening, actress; John F. Kennedy, U.S. president; Daniel Tosh, comedian/TV host. (c) 2013 King Features Syndicate, Inc.
